Now I'm pretty new here, but I see at least one profile with a 1200mm lens in it.
So, let's see the photos from a 1200mm lens! THAT would be cool.

Seriously? Isn't that lens like $60,000 and there are only 12 of them in the world?
Who on POTN has one (or at least has one in their sig ???)?

Yeah, there is a guy posting now saying he does have one.
So, who knows? Maybe he does, and maybe, just maybe, we'll get to see a pic!
And, you're right -- There are only a few:

But, just in case, I think the photos could be amazing.
Now, what would even SI need with those? Ski jumping? Steeplechase?

This guy has a Canon one? I know of some people with the Opteka 1200 lens here but the Canon one? What the frack would anyone even do with it to warrent having one? A 600mm and 2x TC probably produces almost as good of images as the 1200 and the guy with the 600mm has a wallet full of $100 bills two feet thick in his back pocket. (Yeah I said frack, I watch Battle Gallitica too)

I think it's a pretty safe bet that no one on POTN has one. According to Wikipedia, the lenses are owned by Canon, Sports Illustrated, and The BILLIONAIRE founder of Oakley. Not only is this lens expensive, it's rare. So, even if you did find one AND had the money to buy it, you'd have to find someone willing to sell it.

I've met one, handled it, even shot it - they let me use my own 350D. 1920mm of focal length is....mind-bending.
They sure as heck did not let me take it home though!!
I bet there are other owners Canon hasn't talked about and I think there are more than 10 copies in the world. Various CPS units around the world have one or two each, and the lens goes on tour occasionally. I think the real owners are not in a hurry to trumpet the fact.

I thought this lens was by order only.
Which means that if your willing to pony up the price they will make it for you.
I don't think Canon would turn down the possibility of making a $$,$$$.$$ price lens if someone is willing to flash the cash!
What was that lens that was made for the person in Quatar for six figures? Wasn't that just a one off though?

I have also seen a few 1200mm in gear lists. None that say canon 1200mm though. I wonder what they would charge for a 1200mm f/5.6L IS USM   . It has got to be hard panning that sucker around while keeping it stable during action shots. Maybe I'll sell everything I own and custom order one. I could used the hood to sleep in. The 1200/5.6 is discontinued, has been for some time.
As for numbers, why don't we start off a count?:
1) SI: 2
2) Jannard: 1
3) Aus CPS: 1
That's four, over to you guys for the rest.

Images.google.com shows a few shots of them in use, including 2 in one photo. Presumably either the SI or CPS pair. They also show one in Singapore (I think it was) and one in Europe.
And, there is a photo of a second Canon 1200mm lens. This one f/11 and with a FL mount. Supposedly there was also a f/8 version in the FD line but I can't find any official info on it.

Pixel density is excellent with the 20D, but in that case, might as well go for the 400D which is even better.

It is still on display at the Canon Australia website http://www.canon.com.au/products/cameras_lenses_accessories/super_telephoto_lenses/ef1200mmF56lusm.html although there isn't a link to it from the main page. It is also on the pdf brochure that is available at http://www.canon.com.au/ftp/eos_ef_lens_guide%20web.pdf - obvioulsy this brochure is out of date but it does state the lens is available for special orders.
I recall a discussion about this lens sometime ago on this forum and seem to remember that at least one has been converted for film or TV use; I'm guessing for animal docos - if you look at some of the footage of David Attenborough docos and how close some of the shots are I am betting they are using some mighty long lenses for the shots.

Not any more guys. The final word: this lens is no longer in production; special order or otherwise.
If you want one, you are looking at a very limited supply of second-hand units - that's it.

I am sure with enough money Canon would build another one. But whats the point, you could probably with enough money get Sigma to build the Ultimate Monster zoom like 300 to 1600mm or something for $100Gs.

Let me put it that way ... Jim Jannards other hobbies include (or at least included at some time) financing a drag racing team to compete in top fuel events ... I think that $ 100,000 for a lens is not the world for him then
I have heard a number of 40 of these lenses produced, but I could not find any source to confirm this 'hearsay'.
As to the sig lines here on the forum ... let me just say that I would suggest to a fellow forum user to first upgrade from the 300D/20D to a 1-series in order to get the best results out of his 300/2.8, 600/4 and 1200/5.6 lenses that he claims to have in his sig:lol:

He actually has a real nice assorment of lenses. He doesn't really need a bazillion lenses with what hes got. IDK about that guy, but most of the insanely stupid rich people I know are quite modest about it. They live in a modest home that suits them, drive reasonable vehicles that are a couple years old, and behave as anyone else I know. Society would like you to believe that big bank accounts means you can throw it away all the time.... when in fact it means that you probably lived a modest life to accumulate it :D

What do you mean by things calm down? my country or your country?
BTW, even my country is rich doesn't mean all people living there are rich.
And, you are WELCOME to UAE anytime.

I mean things calming down in your region. I know UAE does not have a big terrorist problem, but being military I am a high value target and I'd rather wait a few years.
EDIT: I realize not everyone's rich, I've seen both sides of the story. I did think it was funny that you can get ticketed for having a dirty car.

LMFAO... those two are both RIDICULOUS! The fishy can see behind itsself, and that 2000mm looks like a freaking water jug!!
I have an 8" Meade SCT whichs translates to 2000mm @ f/10 or 3200mm with my 20d mounted. It IS about the same size and weight as a water jug for your office cooler. I also have a focal reducer/field flattener which will allow f/6.3. This thing is great for looking at the moon or DSO's but for terrestrial use it totally sucks.
these are not a great picture but it is at 2000/3200mm

Canon EF 1200mm lens
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L lens is a professional EF lens made by Canon that was introduced in 1993, six years after the launch of EOS cameras, and discontinued in 2005. The initial price for this lens was US$89,579. It weighs more than 36 pounds (16 kg), comes with its own heavy-duty tripod and case, and was built only by request. The focal length can be increased to 1700 mm f/8 or 2400 mm f/11 using the Canon EF Extenders 1.4× and 2× respectively. There are believed to be around a dozen of the EF 1200 mm lenses in existence. Sports Illustrated magazine owns two of them, as does Canon Professional Services and James Jannard, the billionaire founder of Oakley.

To add fire to this discussion, the latest SI Magazine (Peyton Manning is on the cover) has the photog staff members posing... If I'm not mistaken, two of them are carrying the Canon 1200mm lense... One is holding it by it's handle and the other guy has it over his shoulder... Caption says something like, ".... SI photographers use only Canon photography equipment ... These 13 men had to cover the entire Superbowl by themselves... " It was something like that... Nonetheless, you could see the lenses they were all using (including the 1200mm)...
Go check it out when you get a chance...

You think a lens is booked for every day a month? LOL A lens like this would likely get very little rental action. Very few would have a use for it, and of those, very few could handle it.

Why, are you close with James and know he still has his? You just never know, and for that fact why would you ever care. If I feel someone is blowing bs, I ignore them. I have been wrong enough times to know better then to call someone a liar without proof. There is a lot of money floating around out there. A buddy of mine who does sports medicine was flown to from the states to europe to do some theropy for a certain persons daughter - flew first class, stayed in the best hotels, had a charter jet to transport him around the continent, and when he was done he was given a ring to give to his wife worth well north of $10,000 us as a gift for his wife for putting up with him being called over seas at the last minute. When I went for drinks with this person and his client, the client tipped the waitress over 1000 euro. Stuff happens. He could be telling the truth, he could be a liar. But I wouldn't call someone that in a public forum unless I had something to back it up.

Agreed, its perfectly possibly he is wealthy and owns the lens. Its just also highly improbable, and this is a photography forum so we tend to take a little more issue over photography stuff. We like to know, where possible, that peoples opinions may be formed based on knowledge rather than making crap up. If they can prove they own the lens it would increase my value of their opinion as they would presumably be someone who puts some effort into photography. Otherwise I'll have no value for their opinion as they are likely a little kid or someone who just feels inadequate and wants to impress people.
Just my opinion. :)
Anyway, weren't we supposed to be talking about the 1200 and its photos rather than its possible owners? If we do have a member who likes to point out they own one it sure is a pity they can't post a photo or two here.

Anyone know the actual MSRP of the 1200mmL new?
I had however always figured that economically this lens focal length/FOV was irrelevant now that we have very good resolution from a 600mmL, 1.4x, 1.6x APS-C body combo.
I mean wouldn't the second combo listed also be cheaper by a huge degree? Rumors I had heard were $80,000(USA) for the 1200mmL lens. I'm sure an updated model would run $80,700(USA) with IS. :p  :p
