Quick question...

I am in the process of insuring my camera equipment, and I need serial numbers for everything. Problem is...I can't seem to find a serial number on the 550EX flash. I looked everywhere I could think of...on the flash itself, inside the battery cover, on the warranty card, on the box it came in, etc...and I can't find the serial number anywhere. Do these things even have serial numbers? My little $100 kit lens even has a serial number...so I can't believe that a $400 flash wouldn't...but who knows. Does anyone know where I might find the serial number?

Thank you very much!

Underside of the flash head itself is a number, but I've no idea if that is the serial number or not.

Underside of the flash head itself is a number,
Ian

Thats the only numbrt on mine and it's what I have noted as the serial number (it's a 6 digit alpha numeric)

Thanks guys, I must have totally passed over that. Don't I look like the fool. :? I will check it out when I get home today. I just found it odd that the serial number was not located anywhere else. At least with the camera and the lenses, the serial number is on the unit itself, on the warranty card, and on the box it comes in. On my 550 at least, no number on the card or box...I will check the unit when i get home.

Thanks again!

I've heard that that number is not the serial number. Perhaps a call to Canon is in order to clear up the confusion.

If that is the serial number then they should all be different.

Mine starts with an 'O' and ends with a '5'

Also, just above the hotshoe attachment is a blank plate, which would seem to be where a serial number would be.

Hmmm. Mine begins with "O" and ends with "5" also.

I sent an email to Canon about this issue and got a very prompt reply. I will post the email below. Hopefully this will clear up any confusion for everyone.

Thank you for contacting Canon product support.

The number of your Speedlite flash is the number you've described in
your message ("on the under side of the flash head itself"). This is
called a lot number.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

Sincerely,

Jenny

A lot number, huh?

They probably stamp out lots of 1000 or so, so it doesn't pin the unit down very closely like a serial number would.
