I did the lights. I set the timer on my G3 to 10 seconds, wait for the shutter to go off, and then i ran behind her and started to paint the light.

Last night i had better results.

Those pics are awesome. You won't mind telling me how you do that would you?

a lot of trial and error.
I basically explained it above.

I tried 15 seconds and it was way to overexposed. My subject was totally white. So then i tried 10, 8, 7 etc... Until it was semi correctly exposed. Without the patterns of light. Im just testing for exposure. You can also paint light on your subject if you need more exposure.

I would also tweak the f stop by addding in more light or decreasing it. After about 15 tries i was satisfied with the above settings for this particular shot. Location light varies, so also bracket.

The great thing about digital is that you can tell right then and there if the shot came out. With film you kinda have to hope it comes out right. I once wasted a whole roll of 36 exp with only 3 decent shots and i had to wait a whole day for processing.
There is no hard set rule, just trial and error, but my example above will give you a base to start from.

ps

before you begin shooting shine a light on your subject and use manual focus, and keep it at that setting. Your subject must remain motionless or you will get major blur. The first pic i didnt do that, but the second i did. just get creative on light designs.

whew!!!!
good luck!!!!

What kind of light do you use?

Really great, and different. I think I'll be experimenting myself.

One critcism though, the green lights in the background are annoying, especially in the second one where he could have blocked it and maybe had a green glow around him

An ordinary flash light about 2 inches in diameter. I suggets a really thin light because the streaks of light come about reallly thin. use a bigger flash light to actually paint more light on your subject.

Thanks for the crit. I noticed my pics has a green hue to them because of the lights in the background.
Im in the city, so im surrounded by neighboring house houlights. Notice that the sky is also lit up,because of downtown lights. Also This shot was taken at 1am. Ideally this type of pic should be taken in the woods or a place where there is absolutey no lights. You will get a completely black background and a way better effect.

photography is fun!!!!

After a bunch of fooling around here i needed a stronger lens, so i went to my trusty AE-1.

My final shots using the Canon AE-1.

Kodak Portra 400 ( i should have used ISO 100 but oh well)
50 mm 1.4 Canon FD lens.
F8 ( i should have used F11 but i was too excited from running)
tripod
15 seconds

The reason i used f8 was because I had already done testing on my G3 with f8. Even thought the lenses are waaaaaaaaaay different, i had a base to work from. Sounds weird but it works for me.
I used my release cable and then i started to paint her with light from head to toe for about 8 seconds. then i turned off the light and quickly ran behind her and used a thinner flash light and made the patterns for about 5 seconds. Then i ran back and closed the shutter.

This is easier with 3 peeps, but two can do it. I process my color prints so the final pic in the darkroom was
