I've been playing with an infrared filter (R72) on a G3 with at least acceptable, not great, results. Now I'm wondering if I will be able to do this with my 10D. I would have tried myself, but we've been socked in with clouds and rain the past few days.
Have you tried it? How did it work? Tips?

Thanks, Timmy. I did try that, but couldn't find any reference to people using the 10D for this sort of application, nor could I find any posts in this forum specific to the 10D and infrared, hence my question.
As I said in my first post, I have used my G3 with an infrared filter, but don't know if will work the same with the 10D.

Search around a little and i can assure you some of the IR posts here, infact i'd say a majority of the great ones, were taken with a 10D. You shouldnt have any problem.

To my knowledge, a 10D (as it comes out of the box) won't work for IR photography because the image sensor has an IR filter in front of it. There is somebody somewhere that is altering them for IR photography, but I can't remember where I saw that.

I don't know about anybody else's but my 10D works great with a Hoya R72 filter on it at taken IR pictures.
However, it is only barely taking IR pictures in the range of about 720nm (the bottom end of the R72 filter) and about 800-820nm the top end of what the IR filter on the 10D will let through.
On the other hand my D60 will not work with the filter except for the little bit of red light the filter lets through.

My 10D + R72 seems to work fine for near-IR:

The above isn't anywhere as nice a shot as Longwatchers' but I'm very much a newbie to IR. :)
I got loads of great info from here:

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the replies. Seems I may now have to invest in a larger diameter IR filter ;-) I only bought a 52mm to play with on the G3. Now I'll need a pricier 72mm for my 10D lenses. Anyone know of cheap resources? The cheapest in that diameter at B&H is $125.
Jyoti, your image didn't show up I received this message:
"Hello, 165.247.105.41

What were you trying to do, ya little tinker?"
Now if only the clouds would go away. It's starting to feel like Seattle here in Virginia.

Since you have a 52mm IR filter, two good lenses for IR shots on the 10D are the canon 50mm 1.8 mkI or mkII. The II can be had for about $70 and will also give you another good lens for your 10D. That way you can experiment with IR with the filter you already have, and later if you decide to get the 72mm, you'll still have an excellent little 50mm lens.
Just another possibility.

This is good to know. I too was under the impression that I could not take IR with my 10D, thanks for the heads up.

Greetings All,
My line of thought is that the lens has an IR blocking coating on it and once past the lens there is nothing in the actual camera body to block IR (I'm talking about DSLR's not point and shoot cameras with permenent lenses). Thus different lenses will give different results. I've just recieved my Hoya 77mm R72 and have not much test time yet. On my 1D the 100-400 L lens required over 25 seconds on a VERY overcast day and my 28-70 F/2.8 L was in the same area, needed longer exposure than the 1D could do. Then I tried my much dis-liked 10D with a cheap lens and with the 28-70 F/2.8L and got exposures at 3 min., as I said it was very overcast. I say cheap lens because I can't remember what it is other than a Canon zoom and it is 72 mm OD. Lets hope for clear days soon and get some testing done!
Also- can anyone advise some sites on IR false color processing? I'd found some about a year ago, which got me interested in this, but I'm unable to find anything now.
Thanks
Todd Asher
