View Full Version : Nestled up to the fireplace!

Our furnace went out today and the house temp got down below 50 degrees, so I fired up the fireplace. Sammy (our Rat Terrier) found a warm spot on the couch.
This is my first post so let me have it! I'm thinking it may be too dark. I wanted to keep the ambient light low in order to allow the fireplace to glow in the background. Shot with my XTI, 50mm at f5, 1/8sec (tripod), 400 iso, flash. Thanks for any C&C.

Looks like he's comfortable! Focus is sharp and the colors look natural. Welcome!

Welcome !... I also like the shot.
You ask for C&C. Did you try the same photo but with higher aperture values? Maybe a more defined flame, something to give a bit more weight to that top right side of the frame. Just my .02

Mario,
I did take a few at f6.3 but not any higher, and they don't look much different. I agree that a more defined flame would improve the shot. Since the flame is moving and I used a slow shutter speed I suspect that contributed to the blurred flame as well.
I appreciate your feedback. Thanks

maybe braketing?... Three exposures, that way you get the best of the dog in the foreground, and also the background. The photo is not bad at all, I like it very much.

Welcome to POTN!
This is a lovely shot. I also agree it has nice clarity on what you want in focus and the glow of the flame behind is nice. Nice colors as well!

I would have liked to see the camera a little more to the right. The dog's face/head is what needs to be shown and there is a bit of his body that looks awkward and extended. The fire is really over exposed. I would suggest metering for slightly blown highlights on the fire and use a fill flash to illuminate your subject.

I'm not sure that I understand what you're suggesting. Since the fire was already over exposed wouldn't blowing the highlights on the fire result in the same thing? I'm new to this stuff so please excuse my ignorance. Thanks
