With the introduction of Microsoft Vista v1.0, more and more people will gradually begin to make the switch. It is widely accepted that the initial version will be full of bugs and many unknowns. Until the new OS has time to mature and stabilize, many of us will only know what's working and what's not working through good old fashioned trial and error. In the meantime, I forsee tons of questions regarding known or unknown compatibility issues with hardware and software optimized for Windows XP. I'm starting a thread to document and catalog known compatilbility issues with Vista to use for reference for the entire POTN community. Please list known issues in the following format:
Example
Software/Hardware: Canon i9900 Printer
Issue: needs updated driver
Solution: add-on module for printer driver
Link: http://alpha02u.c-wss.com/inc/ApplServlet?RQF=MENU&RQS=WWUCA910&LA=1171599825898&SV=WWUCA900&menu=DR&TRF=MAIN (http://alpha02u.c-wss.com/inc/ApplServlet?RQF=MENU&RQS=WWUCA910&LA=1171599825898&SV=WWUCA900&menu=DR&TRF=MAIN)
Notes: smooth sailing
Maybe I'm leaving out key information, but this thread will be continuously updated. If anyone can think of a better format for documenting compatibility issues feel free to chime and and make a recommendation. Whatever you list will be updated and added here to the first post in this thread. Please reserve your comments regarding your likes or dislikes of MS Vista for other threads. Let's keep this thread on track to simply provide some sort of database to document any known issues with any given software or hardware. Thanks.
UPDATE: Great sources of information...

Western Digital My Book Backup Software.
The software won't allow you to run the "Advanced Backup" feature. A dialog box appears and says "WD Backup has stopped working..." I can still back up my image files using the more automated approach.
No known solutions so far.
UPDATE:
Re: Western Digital WD Backup software problems in the "Advanced Mode"
I have experienced the same problem I have a "work around." If you expand all the options (i.e., click on all the + signs) in the "Advanced Mode" before you check any of the boxes, you won't see the message "WD has stopped working..." You may then proceed with the backup

Belmondo's tale...
I upgraded one of my machines to Vista, mainly because I had grown weary of sticking pins in my eyes, and was looking for a new way to abuse myself. In that regard, Vista is the gift that keeps on giving.
The initial installation went smoothly enough. I did get a short list of 'potential' problems, but decided they weren't significant enough to dissuade me from going ahead with the upgrade. After starting up for the first time, I discovered that the computer didn't recognize most of the USB devices attached to the computer. I was half expecting that. The real surprises started when I tried opening Quicken 2006. It couldn't find some of the files Quicken needed. I called Intuit, and they didn't know what to do, and they suggested I re-install it. That didn't work, so their next suggestion was to buy Quicken 2007 becasue it was known to be compatible with Vista. I bought it, installed it, and it didn't work.
Concurrent with the Quicken problems, I found I couldn't open Outlook 2003 (a Microsoft product, by the way). I can't remember the exact error message, but it was telling me I didn't have authority to perform that operation. Huh? I called Microsoft support, and after a couple hours, was told it was an Office problem, and I'd have to call the fee-based support people for Microsoft Office. I decided I'd just as soon buy the latest version of Office than pay Microsoft to sort out a problem that had obviously been created by Vista.
When I tried to install Office 2007 (upgrade), the Install Wizard said it couldn't find a qualifying product on the computer, even though Office 2003 was definitely there. I called Microsoft again, and they told me to uninstall and reinstall Office 2003 and retry installing 2007. Same problem. Then, they said I'd have to completely remove the 2003 installation again, this time using regedit to delete every reference to Office 11 (2003). That took a couple hours---there are lots of entries in the registry. After that, I went through the same drill of trying to install 2007 without any luck. Microsoft finally decided to give up on installing it as an upgrade, and gave me a new product key for a full version. It wouldn't install. After at least 9 hours on the phone with various tech support people, Microsoft finally decided there was nothing they could do. They apologized profusely, and said they would get back to me if they ever found a cure, although there was no guarantee they would work on it unless and until enough other people showed up with the same problem.
That was the end of Microsoft's involvement in the ordeal. I did get a follow-up phone call from them yesterday, but there were no new suggestions on what to do.
In the meantime, I had noticed that a lot of files had been tagged 'read-only.' Most of them I was able to change one at a time, but there was no good explanation from Microsoft why that had happened. The 'read-only' problem, I learned, was the reason I hadn't been able to use Qucken and Outlook. The files I needed, however, could not be changed from read-only, so I was still dead in the water. Then, I found the User Account Control (UAC) setting and decided to try it. Voila!! All of a sudden, I could use Quicken and Outlook again. I still can't install Office 2007, but I don't really care. I was very happy with 2003, and only bought it to try to get Outlook back.
The last surprise came last night when I tried to open Photoshop CS2. Evidently the serial number had been lost during the Vista upgrade, so I had to re-install CS2. There are lots of other programs on that computer that I haven't tried yet, so I'm sure this story still hasn't been completely told.
By the way, every time I re-boot the computer, it tells me I should turn UAC back on. Like I'm going to do that!! I just give the computer the finger and continue with the boot.
Now that Vist is up and running, it looks very different than XP, but functionally doesn't seem a lot different. It's slick looking, but that's not reason enough to torture yourself. If you're like me, and you choose to ignore the warnings of friends, just be prepared for a process that could consume days of your life, cripple your computer, but make you the envy of every kid in your neighborhood.
Canon DPP will just "stop working" for some apparent reason.
Update: I'm having trouble with only one of my file folders. For some reason DPP will open up any image folder but this one. The folder opens fine in every other application, but not in DPP. Whenever I make an attempt to open this particular folder in DPP it shuts down and a dialog box appears saying that "DPP Viewer stopped working". It's really not that big of a deal. But I suspect Vista has something to do with it.
on another note, if you use AVG 7.5 Free Edition, it TOO will lose its product key and you will have to uninstall and reinstall AVG. simply running the repair will not work. hope this helps!
I've upgraded from Windows XP to Vista without any real problems except for XPlay (iPod software) refuses to both work and uninstall after the upgrade (it insists on working only on Windows XP, so it's XPlay that's badly written).
It looks like Epson finally release 32 & 64-bit Vista drivers for the R2400. I downloaded and installed them on Friday, printed a photo, and things worked out fine.
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supAdvice.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&type=highlights¬eoid=86150
I was also pleasantly surprised to find Vista drivers for out old Perfection 2400 scanner, which seem to work just fine.
All I'm waiting for now are the Spyder2 drivers...
-- John
I always learn the hard way. Running XP Pro for three years now and it seems pretty stable. Vista comes out and I just have to have it. Install went fine, then my Epson printer wouldn't work, however they now have drivers out for my R2400, then my IPod wouldn't work, then CS2 I had to restart photoshop every time I opened a raw file, it just hung. Vista has been taken off the computer, XP is back and running smoothly. I will wait a couple of month and then re-install vista, hopefully they will have some of the bugs worked out. I saw that there are already 10 or so security updates for it already.....some things never change.......ahem!!!
Has anybody had any PTP issues with MS Vista. I have a Canon 400D, and Vista does not recognize my camera. I have installed all the drivers (There doesn't seem to be new PTP drivers an the Canon website). Whenever I plug the camera in Vista pops up with "cannot recognize camera" Is there any way around this? Thanks Richard
DxO simply doesn't work with Vista.
Inquired and received this reply..."We are currently working on support for Microsoft Vista. We plan on releasing a free update of DxO Optics Pro compatible for Vista early March"
By the way zoombrowser 5.8 (vista compatible version) is available on the canon website. Oh and I finally found a vista 64 driver for my linksys wireless LAN card on the taiwanese RaLink website! Have had to do a dual boot installation so I can use my camcorder and digital tv tuner.
Actually, it looks like Colorvision released something yesterday. I try installing it later tonight and see if that works. If it does, then I'm all good with Vista...

Just purchased the Microsoft Optical Desktop Elite wireless keyboard and mouse. The package is clearly marked "Vista Ready", but still had problems with the installation software that came with it. You'll have to go to Microsoft's website to download the update to the software.
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/DownloadResult.aspx?prod=pk_dek&os=WVista_32&lang=en&driverVersion=IntelliType%20Pro%206.1%2032-bit%20for%20Windows%20Vista
Had one main problem so far, firewire transfer of files from my 1DMKIIN is very slow indeed.Connects to the camera through EOS Utility but transfer speeds are up to one minute for a raw file.Still cant sus it but will post again as soon as i fix the problem.
Just picked up HP DV6000 with Vista and it will not pick up the XTi. I am now realizing the XTi only supports up to XP. I have upgraded the ZoomBrowser EX to 5.8, but still not seeing the XTi. I am unable to use the "Remote Shooting" with Vista. This really stinks!!!! Is there a way to upgrade the XTi for Vista to pick it up?
Next up, Vista failed to recognize my LinkSys LNE100TX PCI NIC...however the XP drivers worked fine. I have several of these NIC's lying around. The one I had initially in the PC was a version 4.1. Could not get that to work. I have a version 5.1 so I swapped it out, and it worked fine.
Notable problems:
When attempting to install something off of a network share (i.e. run setup.exe off of a share on another machine) I get the dreaded BSOD! Not sure if it is related to UAC...gotta check on that.
Also, the whole hibernate/low power mode thing is "buggy" on my PC.
Vista's security system is causing some problems with plugins for me.
Focus Magic gives an error when you run it as a filter unless the hosting application is Run As Admin. The problem now is that I can't drag and drop into the application - Vista won't allow dropping onto applications running at a higher security level than the source.
Guess the plugins need updating for Vista...
The only program that I run that will not work with Vista is Quickbooks 2006, but that was to be expected as it stated on their website.
Do your research before hand. Most of the companies have updates out there, or ones coming very soon. I went through the Canon, HP, Adobe, etc, websites, and bookmarked all of the pages that I thought I might need to update drivers. Also -- run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor before hand -- it will tell you what programs may not run right (without the proper drivers).

I struggled for most of a day trying to get Nero 7 the Vista compatible version to work on a new Dell E521 preloaded with Vista Home Premium. Many problems and could not uninstall it from my system without using a separate MS Windows Uninstaller program I found on the MS site. I'm familiar with Nero and wanted to use it instead of Roxio which comes preloaded. Guess thats not gonna happen for now. If anyone has success with Nero on Vista please let me know how and which version. thanks.

This is a great idea. Let's do it, and let's try to stick to specific issues and (hopefully) resolutions. Let's keep Microsoft bashing to a minimum, and let's not have any gratuitous gloating from the Macintosh contingent.

one more thing, when upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista, DO NOT download current updates from website when asked during installation. do the updates AFTER successfully installing Windows Vista. trust me, it will save you a lot of setup restarts! :D

Not sure if this is Vista related, but I'll post it here nonetheless. I originally sent this message to a POTN member in a PM who was interested in the Canon CanoScan 4400F after i purchased mine:
"Did you have any trouble with the bundled software that came with the scanner? Shortly after installing the software in my laptop, it caused it to crash. It was pretty catastrophic. At first I didn't associate the crash with the software. I just figured I was running too many labor intensive memory hungry programs simutaneously and pushed my poor laptop too far. Yesterday I installed the software into my new Dell XPS 410 and my machine started to behave very strange. At first I thought it might be infected with malicious software, so I downloaded Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool. It started to show the same signs and symptoms just before my laptop crashed. Internet Explorer7 was running dog slow and was consuming way too much processing power, and I'm running an Intel 6600 Core 2 Duo with 2gb RAM! Several programs started to run erradically as well. Then I remembered that all of this started after I installed the bundled scanner software. I kept the scanner drivers and all the 4400F related stuff, but uninstalled Presto Page Manager and the OmniPage SE. After I uninstalled those applications my PC was back to normal performing at optimal levels again. And I mean I noticed the difference immediately. As soon as the last program was removed, my computer came out of limp mode. It could be that there is a compatiblity issue with the bundled software and Windows Vista, but then I remember that my laptop crashed not long after I installed the programs and I'm running Windows XP SP2 on it."

1. Either no one is having serious issues or
2. all the smart people are staying away from Vista until the dust settles!

Well there are lots of warnings from 'IT experts' but I guess most 'real people' are just installing and getting on with it. At the end of the day the average bod has limited number of periferals to worry about, unlike your average corporate, and will search around for drivers and such if they need to.
The only reason I didn't put Vista on the desktop is that it is an x64 machine and my legal update (Vista Business) won't update it. I need to get a full version it seems and start from scratch: I don't have time for it at the moment.

I posted this in another thread a few days back. It seems to have relevance here....

I had to reinstall a lot of things. Most notable was Photoshop CS2. Other things that come to mind:

Based on my previous 2 installs of Vista, taking all the application software we use related to Photography, I'd wait on using Vista. It isn't stable. I've had different problems with each install related to the OS only. The vendors aren't telling people what it really takes to make that OS completely functional, only minimum specs. As any computer tech knows, Microsoft's minimum specs are usually adequate at best.
I'm going to do what I did with XP, wait untl the first full service pack comes out.

Why are you hooking up your camera to your PC? If you're trying to use some sort of wizard in Windows to download images from your camera I would advise against that.
Get yourself a CF card reader and use the ZoomBrowser EX software that came with your camera to download the images that way. You should have no problems. But if you insist on still trying to connect your camera directly to your PC then so be it. Your issue was noted and added to the list nonetheless.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who aren't having serious issues. My system seems to be running very smooth at the moment. There are the occaisional hiccups, but no more than what I was experiencing with XP SP2. Windows has been updating itself frequently. I think holes are being plugged rather quickly. It's definitely not a ship in danger of sinking.

I've really been spending very little time on that computer since I've switched to Vista. I still can't load the Office 2007 on it, and the latest theory from Microsoft is thta there's a problem with the product keys on some of the disks that they shipped. The suggested 'fix' is to return the disk that I bought, and wait a while before buying another one. (???) That's a fix?

LOL it's a good thing I don't use the Photo Acquisition Wizard! Nope. I'll just stick to my old tried and true method of downloading via ZoomBrowser EX. Thanks for the heads up nonetheless. ;)

Currently many of Canon's older and Newest high end printers have no 64 Bit drivers.
This includes the i9100 on the "old" side, and the
IPF5000 on the brand new super high end side :(
I do not know if the IPF5000 has a driver that will function in Vista in 32bit.

I had no idea about the two Spyder2 drivers. Thanks.
Actually, it looks like Colorvision released something yesterday. I try installing it later tonight and see if that works. If it does, then I'm all good with Vista...

Just purchased the Microsoft Optical Desktop Elite wireless keyboard and mouse. The package is clearly marked "Vista Ready", but still had problems with the installation software that came with it. You'll have to go to Microsoft's website to download the update to the software.

Noted. If I may comment, you really should try using a card reader to download your files. The only time I'll connect the camera to the PC is if I need to set P-fn., which is never.

See your point but without getting to involved when its working :o the speed of transfer is far quicker with firewire than a card reader and when i have 4x 4gig cards of RAW's to transfer id rather stick with firewire.
Still have not got it working but some intresting things about Vista not carrying support for firewire so it might be ASTA LA VISTA for me.

Just converted the first batch of raw in ZoomBrowser using Vista - 64. The time on the old computer was exactly one min. for the conversion of each raw to jpeg and is now 7 seconds! It's probably mostly the difference in computers than Vista but the more I use Vista, the more i'm liking it.

I installed Vista a few days ago on one of my older Home Brewed PC's.
P4 2.53Ghz 533FSB
1.5GB SDRAM...Yes...SDRAM. (One of those "transition" mobos!)
GeForce 6200 AGP w/256MB DDR
2 x 40GB Seagate 'Cuda HDD's.
17" Samsung SyncMaster LCD. (Ugly, white, bulky...and costly 7-8 years ago!!!)
Antec Sonata Case
Zalman HSF
Panaflo Case fans.
Clean install. Not an upgrade.
Gotta love the eye candy...
I don't have anything related to photgraphy gear to report here however I will describe my experience anyways.
I upgraded my old and tired GeForce MX Video Card to a newer but still tired GeForce 6200 256MB card.:) Yes, AGP and all...Wanted to get a better VC for the Aero Glass "experience"...:rolleyes::rolleyes:
Next up, Vista failed to recognize my LinkSys LNE100TX PCI NIC...however the XP drivers worked fine. I have several of these NIC's lying around. The one I had initially in the PC was a version 4.1. Could not get that to work. I have a version 5.1 so I swapped it out, and it worked fine.
Monitor is Samsung 17" SyncMaster...one of the original ones...cost me freakin' $1200 7 or 8 years ago! OUCH!@# Recognized and works fine.
Mouse is Logitech trackball. Keyboard is a Dell keyboard. Both work fine.
AVG 7.5 Free working fine so far.
WinZip 11 also fine.
Adobe Acrobat 8.0 also fine.
Office 2007 also fine.
Will try these soon and report back with results:
Photoshop CS2
DPP
SanDisk USB 2.0 Flash card reader (Probably will work fine though)
HP LaserJet All-in-one printer
Canon i5000 Pixma printer
Epson Perfection 3170 Scanner
Notable problems:
When attempting to install something off of a network share (i.e. run setup.exe off of a share on another machine) I get the dreaded BSOD! Not sure if it is related to UAC...gotta check on that.
Also, the whole hibernate/low power mode thing is "buggy" on my PC.

Vista's security system is causing some problems with plugins for me.
Focus Magic gives an error when you run it as a filter unless the hosting application is Run As Admin. The problem now is that I can't drap and drop into the application - Vista won't allow dropping onto applications running at a higher security level than the source.
Guess the plugins need updating for Vista...

I recently installed the update version of Vista (Home Premium) on my Dell PC. The entire process took about 2 hours.
I have not had any compatability issues with the following programs (including but not limited to):
Adobe CS2
Adobe Acrobat 8.0
Adobe Lightroom 1.0
DPP 2.2
Zoom Browser 5.8
iTunes (if you update before hand, the program works perfect)
Phanfare
Mozilla & Thunderbird
Macromedia MX
Microsoft Office 2003
Everything has worked flawlessly so far. I did not have to uninstall and reinstall any programs.
I updated the drivers for the following printers, and have not had any problems:
Brother P-Touch QL-500
Phaser 4800
HP B9180 Photosmart Printer
Brother 6050DN
The only program that I run that will not work with Vista is Quickbooks 2006, but that was to be expected as it stated on their website.
Do your research before hand. Most of the companies have updates out there, or ones coming very soon. I went through the Canon, HP, Adobe, etc, websites, and bookmarked all of the pages that I thought I might need to update drivers. Also -- run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor before hand -- it will tell you what programs may not run right (without the proper drivers).

Don't worry about the speed issue right after an install of Vista. It takes a few sessions to get it's precaching of applications sorted out. You'll find it'll get a bit faster on every reboot and then will plateau.
Also the upgrade advisor program - don't take the advise it gives as gospel, it'll miss things that the actual upgrade process might stall upon. That being said, run it before an upgrade so you're forewarned of any potential problems.

I hesitate to over-praise or say anything positive at this point. Every time I declare Vista "Smooth Sailing!" Something bad happens.
But if you really must know, Vista is running much better than expected and is less problematic than XP was at its introduction. For v1.0 it is surprisingly very stable. And I have to give MS kudos for the regular updates to keep things running smooth.

My experience so far has been fine except for a couple of minor things in Photoshop. Not sure if its due to the 1500 fonts I have loaded but once in while when Im using txt tool or paint brush, i get a few sec delay when doing something. Doesnt happen often and usually goes back to normal rather quickly. Also, using optikVerve labs virtual photographer plugin .. it usually cause Photoshop to crash the first time I use it. But after opening up Photoshop, the plugin will run okay.

Koutech IOFLEX-PFU331 FireWire/1394 & Hi-Speed USB2.0 Combo PCI CardWorking fine with Vista's built-in drivers. No need for driver CD.
Another thing I noticed was that at times a process called TrustedInstaller.exe eats up almost all of the CPU cycles bogging down the PC. I can't find much on that process except that it is Windows Update related. If anyone has any info on it please let me know.

I gave it another try today. First I completely removed Roxio which came installed by Dell and then removed every instance of my previous install attempts. Thought I had them all uninstalled/removed but some references were found. Then reinstalled the latest Vista compatible version 7 and all is good. I have a 30D and since I upgraded my computer and got stuck with vista, LR won't recognise .CR2 files....sort of.
Here's what happens: I plug-in my camera like normal, select import files, a box pops up asking if I want to download from EOS 30D or another location, I choose 30D, it reads from the camera cos the red light starts flashing and then tells me there are no 'readable' files found.
If I open the camera in explorer and select all, copy to a folder and then go back into LR, import files, browse to folder, I see all the .CR2 files and can import easily.
Any tips?

I got my machine just after my birthday (Feb 19) on Feb 20. I really have had NO major issues. I think the biggest differece is, if you doing an upgrade from a previous version of Windows, there have been a lot of issues. Otherwise, fresh out of the box...so far so good.
Mine is AMD 64 X2 dual-core 4600+; 2.4GHz + 3072MB PC2-4200 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM. I also upgraded the video card to an NVIDIA e-GeForce 7600GS 256MB. Vista is still a RAM sucker, but no real issues yet..
EXCEPT-
I can't access anything that uses FLASH. I am not a computer illiterate. I have looked all over to see what could be blocking the content and can't figure it out. I have checked in internet options, check settings in Norton Internet Security and Webroot Spy Sweeper. I am baffled. Anyone have a clue, I'd love to hear it!!!!

About the performance issue, yeah Vista is slow and it seems like you need a pretty good PC to get it to run with good performance.
My main PC has the Core2Duo PC, however I run XP on that one. The one I have Vista running is a P4 2.53Ghz...not the greatest but still decent. Vista crawls on that, however I have not done any optimizations on it. Pretty much running it straight out of the box. If I turn off all the eye candy, well that's the point of using it right?

I recently purchased a laptop and it came with Vista Home Premium installed. I would like to share my experience thus far. I got the laptop setup the way I wanted and deleted much of addtional trailware that comes with it. After I installed the new virus program I wanted the left speaker stopped working. I called tech support at Gateway. Guess what no toll free number and the wait was 45-50 minutes. None of the people I spoke with were actual techs so they read to me from manuals, in the end they said to reset my laptop to the origional setting and go from there. Total time for the call 1 hour 50 minutes. A couple of weeks go by and the wireless connection wasn't working. I again called Gateway, waited even longer for customer service and after 2.5 hours, I was told that it was probally comcast's issue. I asked if I could delete Vista and install XP. I was told no, and that the new motherboards have some kind of code for the Vista software which will not let you delete it and install XP. After talking to Comcast I was given a toll free number to call Microsoft Support directly. When the automated system picked up at Micrfosoft it stated that if I wanted tech support I needed to enter my credit card number. I got to a customer service rep and he stated that if you purchase a computer with Vista installed the company that sold it to you has to provide the tech support. Microsoft will only provide tech support if you purchase the software and install it on an existing system, which for most people would involve replacing, hard drives, adding a ram and other upgrades. If that wasn't annoying enough, you really do have to confirm every action and program you want to use. But the security software from Microsoft doesn't catch or identify spyware and other security issues. Sorry for the long response, just wanted to share the frustration.

jslice, you realize you can turn that confirm stuff off right? You can delete Vista and install XP no problem. format c:\
If the left speaker stopped working it sounds non-OS to me. If the wireless stopped working it could be 18 million things. Waiting all that time on the phone you could have plugged your laptop into the router and surfed to find a solution I'm sure.
I don't really see how most of what you posted has to do with Vista. Considering your lack of Windows knowledge, I think you would be a good candidate for switching to Mac. You'd be happier.

Cosworth, I am very familiar with the Windows operating system and have been using various version for many years. I do know that you can turn off the notification, according to Microsoft this will create security issues due to the Windows firewall being connected to that notification. And yes the issue of the speakers and the wireless internet are due to Vista and the way it handles the device drivers. There are a ton of compatability issues with Vista. The speaker wires were not disconneted internally. After going back to factory settings and deleted everything I had installed, Photoshop etc. the speakers worked again. I don't think that you are qualified to judge what operating system I should or shouldn't be using. Additionally I was/am very happy with XP and have it on the other 3 computers in my home. I have installed and upgraded operating systems before. I was told by Gateway that the Vista system on my laptop is coded to the motherboard and that I couldn't delete it and install XP. This was the first time I had heard of that myself. When I asked the Microsoft Rep he niether confirmed or denied it. Additonally I was told that there are some programs that you can install on a Vista system (again Microsoft wouldn't say what software) and Vista will revert to an unautorized/unregistered version. Even if it is possible to switch the laptop software to XP, why should I as a consumer have to go through the additonal expense of purchasing yet another operating system when I have paid hard earned money for a new laptop & operating system that should function correctly. If I wanted to stay connected/wired I would of purchased another desktop. Do you even use Vista?

Get rid of windows firewall. It always has been and always will be broken. Just for starters it doesn't even block most out going data, just incoming. Get yourself a free firewall online, they're much better than the trash included with Windows.

I'm having trouble getting my Spyder2Pro calibration profile to stick on my Dell XPS M1710 laptop running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. When it boots I can see the Colorvision Profile Chooser software fire up and the screen colour adjusts as I would expect and then about a second later the screen switches straight back again to its original tint. I never got this problem when running XP Pro.
I also have a PC running Vista Ultimate and the monitor profile stays put on that so I don't know why I have a problem on the laptop. I am using the latest software - 2.3.5 - from the Colorvision website. I have tried the most up to date video drivers from Dell's website and also some newer custom drivers downloaded from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ but I get the same problem with both drivers. Occasionally the profile will stick but probably about 9 times out of 10 it reverts back.
The Colorvision website mentions nothing about this problem. Any ideas?

Still, not nearly as advanced, or as good as other firewalls. Not nearly as much customization either. If people just go to google.com and search for comodo firewall, zone alarm, blackice defender they're all free and much better. No reason not to use one, they're a lot better and completely free.

A "firewall" basically does two things. Allows or blocks communication via the opening and closing of ports OR creates "exceptions" for certain programs. Vista does this. Virus and spam protection are additional products beyond the scope of a firewall. (Which, by the way, Vista does offer some protection here too)

Still, not nearly as advanced, or as good as other firewalls. Not nearly as much customization either. If people just go to google.com and search for comodo firewall, zone alarm, blackice defender they're all free and much better. No reason not to use one, they're a lot better and completely free.
Blackice isn't free. It is very good (or was, I haven't used it for years). Zone alarm usually ***** up your system (network stack, from my experience) over a period of time.
If you want security, then I'm afraid that Windows just isn't going to cut it. Try a UNIX (Solaris 10 for Intel), BSD (freeBSD, or even OpenBSD which has the least amount of security issues reported to Secunia by a country mile), or GNU/Linux. Most Linux distributions have an inbuilt firewall (it's part of the Linux kernel itself) that is very efficient. True, there's not always a GUI front end, but most modern distributions do offer a GUI front end.
Good luck to all those using Vista, to my eyes it offers little over Windows XP, although Microsoft would like you to think differently. XP can be made just as safe if you know how. The eye candy stuff is just that - eye candy. Most of you poor sods won't get a choice, you're *forced* to upgrade to it when you buy a new PC (someone should tell Microsoft that customers like choice!). Most places aren't touching Vista, for a variety of issues, despite the BS that Microsoft has tried to lay down with 'it's our biggest seller yet' - this is purely FUD on Microsoft's part - they're forcing OEM vendors to ship, and ONLY ship Vista, nothing else.

Cosworth, I have never installed Photoshop or Adobe Gamma on this machine. I installed Vista as a new install, not an upgrade, and the only colour management software I have installed is Spyder2Pro. I have tried reinstalling it a couple of times and for the first couple of reboots the profile stays put but after that it switches in and then back out again.
It's as if during the boot process the graphics card resets itself. I think Vista must optimise the boot sequence to speed booting as best it can and the success of the profile sticking depends on whether the profile gets run before or after the graphics card resets. It could be a quirk with the graphics drivers but since I have already tried the latest drivers from Dell and www.laptopvideo2go.com I have run out of ideas there. My card is a 7950 GTX.
I never had a problem like this running XP Pro on this machine.

tdodd - from memory, Nvidia has *known* problems with Vista, and their cards/drivers are *not* either working properly, or stably. All I can suggest is to try Nvidia's site...
http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_rel70betadriver.html
You may also find this Nvidia website interesting:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/vistaqualityassurance.html
I'm finding this all highly amusing, since Nvidia's drivers for Vista are causing so many problems, but none of their drivers for XP/Linux/BSD have been this problematic. I think Nvidia knows how to write drivers by now, so I can only conclude that this is due to the way that Windows Vista has been designed, and programmed by Microstuffup.
You will note that Nvidia says:
These NVIDA Windows Vista drivers are under development. This version is not fully optimized for full 3D performance and may not include all available features available on different operating systems. NVIDIA, along with the industry, is continuing to update its Windows Vista drivers to ensure maximum performance on 3D applications and add support for features. These drivers are provided "AS IS." NVIDIA MAKES NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND WHATSOVER AS TO MERCHANTABILITY, COMPATABILITY, PERFORMANCE, APPLICATION OR FUNCTION, AND DISCLAIMS ALL SUCH WARRANTIES TO THE FULLEST EXTENT ALLOWED BY LAW.
Actually, this may be of use to you as well:
http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/101.41/101.41_ForceWare_Release_Notes.pdf
Also, Dell is known to run slightly different BIOS/firmware versions of various types of add-on PC hardware such as video cards, soundcards etc. They quite often are a **** to setup on non Windows systems, why Dell does this, I have no idea. I'm hoping that this is not the problem in your case.
I hope this helps...

dpastern, thanks for those links. I'll have a browse through in a mo. I have made a short video to show the problem during boot It's about 1.6MB and 19 seconds long so not too punishing for those on broadband....
http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=1530485935815198224&pr=goog-sl
The native colour of the display is a bit blueish and the profile takes out the blue. You can see the correction briefly during boot but within 1-2 seconds it reverts back to the blueish tint again. I then apply the profile manually and it sticks.

Thanks, that does look interest. I had a look at the Spyder 2 webpage, and they seem to say that their software is Vista compatible (I really do wonder to be honest, since spyderpro2 isn't a totally new release, and yet Vista is).
I found this support article:
See if you can associate the profile using the Color Management option:
) Go to your system’s Control Panel. Click on the Color Management icon. This will open the Color Management window.
) Locate the Device tab.
) If the profile is not listed in the large window:
) click the Add button
) select the profile from the Associate Color Profile dialog underneath the ICC PROFILES category.
) Locate the profile in the Color Management window and click once on the name to select/highlight it.
) click the Set as Default Profile button.
) click the Close button. Restart your system.
) The splash screen of the Spyder will appear on restart with a message that reads “the profile has been successfully loaded.” This will be confirmation that the monitor is now running/using the new calibrated profile.
It's article #697. I wonder if this will help? I also saw another article about the graphic card's LUT:
After waking up the computer the monitor profile doesn't work fine. What's wrong?
On your video card there's a flash memory called "look up table" (LUT). The ColorVision StartUp.exe flashes correction data to the LUT. This is a big part of your color management.
When your computer is switched to the power save mode, there's no power on the LUT and the flash memory looses the data.
The best solution should be to switch off the power save mode. Then you will keep the monitor warm and you will get the best colors.
That's article # 188. I don't think it applies, but better to mention it, just in case...
Hope this helps.

I've now downloaded another set of drivers - 100.65 (WHQL) to replace the Dell drivers which were 98.XX or maybe 99.XX. I have also tried 101.41 beta drivers but the result is the same with all of them.
Regarding article #697....
I've looked into the Vista Colour Management features and the correct profile is listed and set as default. But there seems to be something a bit weird with the Vista Colour Management side of things. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I untick "Use my settings" or pick an sRGB profile or remove the 1-Generic PnP Monitor profile altogether. The display remains unaltered. So I'm really not sure what purpose the Vista Colour Management serves. It doesn't seem to do anything. Certainly no matter what I do to try to apply the Spyder profile from there it has no effect. Using the Colorvision Profile Chooser does work (but not properly during booting). But there is also something a bit strange about the Profile Chooser under Vista. It issues several warning/error messages about loads of profiles in Vista that are incompatible with the Chooser. So what? I don't need to know that or care about it. I just want it to display the compatible profile(s) and ignore the rest. I did not get this problem under XP. The Chooser just seems to be a bit thick, as does Vista Colour Management.
Regarding article 188....
My laptop actually remembers the profile just fine when going to sleep and re-awakening. It is only cold boots that give me the problem of no profile, because it won't stick during boot.
So I'm afraid I'm still none the wiser at the moment :(

Mmm interesting. My suggestion - log a bug report with spyder, nividia and microsoft. Don't hold your breath. This is the problem with closed sourced, proprietary software, the vendors usually don't give a **** about you, the consumer, and they take their goddamn time to fix problems, if they even both to fix them at all.

Any ideas?
I think I can help with this. My Vista Ultimate was doing the same thing with the Eye-One II calibrator. On mine, the problem was that the startup profile loader was not given admin rights by default. I don't know about the Spyder, but on my pc, you can go into the Startup folder from the Start menu and find a startup program profile loader ("Logo Calibration Loader" for me).
Right click on the icon and select properties, then go to the Compatiblity tab. Check 'Run this program as an Administrator' (see attached pic) I still have a slight issue that seems to be specific to the Eye-One driver not being Vista-ready. Windows now alerts me that it blocked a startup program, but I can right click in the taskbar and tell it to load anyway.

My PC died, and I have a sneaking hunch that it was Vista that killed it. I've had several problems since installing the upgrade, but managed to limp along figuring Microsoft would eventually sort it out for me. I've received periodic emails from them saying they were working on my problem with Microsoft Office (?).
It's a fairly new machine (maybe a year old) with an AMD Athlon 3700+ 64-bit processor. Anyway, it won't boot now, and the installation disk doesn't seem able to repair Windows, so I'm hosed I guess. I will take it in to the local PC repair place who says they have a 50/50 chance of recovering some of the data, but it will cost me $200 just to find out if it's possible. After that, it's time and materials based on how long it takes do recover a couple hundred gigs of 'stuff.'
It's my own fault, so I'm not looking for sympathy. I was getting along just fine with XP, and didn't have to upgrade beyond curiosity. I guess I feel obliged to warn anyone else that's considering an upgrade to either wait a while, at least till XP-1 is released, or buy a machine with it already installed. I just did the latter, and I'm having no problems.

Thanks for the idea. I had already tried this approach and got the same outcome as you. i.e. setting admin privileges simply defers successful execution of the profile until after the system has booted and everything has settled down. It is a workround of sorts but hardly satisfactory as it still requires manual intervention to achieve what should be automatic. If you forget to run the blocked program then you will be running an uncalibrated monitor.
FWIW I've now upgraded my video drivers to the latest nVidia 165.01 release and still have the same problem.
Thinking some more about this I don't think the blame can be laid at Vista's door, given that I have no equivalent problem on my ATI based PC. I'm also not convinced that the problem/solution lies with nVidia. I think the problem may well be caused by a graphics "reset" during booting but I figure that's fair play during booting. The real problem, and the only realistic place for a solution to be engineered, is by Colorvision, who need to find a way to have their software run at the end of the boot process. After all, they are purposely adjusting hardware and there is no certainty that the hardware is ready to be adjusted at the moment the Colorvision software runs. I don't think nVidia should be required to amend their drivers to work with Colorvision; it should be the other way round.

Further to the problem I reported here of my Spyder2 profile failing to stay in effect at each reboot I have a couple of things to report....
1. Once the 2 week default calibration period was up and the software started prompting me to reprofile this delayed the application of the profile till well after booting was complete and when I OK'd the profile it was applied successfully and stayed put. Not really a proper solution but at least it meant I was getting the right profile at every boot.
EDIT : Scratch item 2. I'm afraid the plague of the disappearing monitor profile has returned. I've had to place a shortcut on the desktop to invoke the Colorvision startup program manually after it resets.
2. After various other issues with Vista I dumped it altogether and went back to MCE 2005 and everything felt so much better. However, being a serial fiddler and having too much time on my hands I partitioned my laptop drive and reinstalled Vista as a dual boot system. This time everything is working perfectly under Vista, as far as the Spyder2 profile is concerned. This may be because I have different graphics drivers (the latest from Dell) or because I have not implemented autologon and now have to input my password at the signon screen. This probably means that the system has time to finish booting the hardware before my signon tries to apply the profile. Hence it stays stuck once applied. I think at this point I'll just leave things well alone - if it ain't broke...... :)
For completeness I should also mention that I'm now using Spyder2Express software rather then Spyder2Pro. I don't know if that makes a scrap of difference in this case but as the Pro software offers me nothing extra that I need I thought I'd give the Express software a go.

Install PSE5 via the normal process, but do not launch the application.
Download the PSE5 patch from the Adobe site. http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3569
Now you can launch PSE5. Here is the trick...
If you are importing a backup from an install on another PC follow the restore process to do that.
After the restore PSE5 became non non-responsive. To correct this follow the below. To fix the PSE5 not responding issue, due the following.
Navigate to the following directory and rename it to Organizer_OLD
Documents > AppData > Roaming > Adobe > Photoshop Elements > 5.0 > Organizer
This way when PSE5 opens it will recreate the organizer folder and load.
Some people have noted issues with this in that the tags for the library are gone, but I did not experience that issue.I hope this helps and I hope I did not ramble too much.

Your first best bet is to not use Quicktime. I have elected to not have it installed for the past 5 years. The PC version is not well implemented or written. The amount of grief tranmitted with malicious .mov files is rampant. It's almost as bad a real player.
I was apprehensive when installing Safari as I was sure it would feault an QT install. You get the option to NOt install QT with Safari. Good move on Apple's part. However the bad move on Apple's part was to release Safari is too rough a build. It doesn't work on my machines currently.

I haven't found Quicktime that bad a software application to be honest. I've seen the latest couple of versions have serious lock up issues with the larger High Definition .mov files, but normal .mov files seem to play without issue from my experiences.
In reality, you should be able to use *any* piece of software that you like on an operating system. To be honest, I'd point the finger in Microsoft's direction, not Apple's. Microsoft has long provided shoddy, insecure, unreliable software and operating systems (and charged a premium for that priviledge I might add). I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to deliberately sabotage Quicktime, because it's a competitor to Windows Media Player. I'm old enough to remember what Microsoft did to Netscape Communicator, which was a far superior browser to Internet Explorer imho.
To be honest - either get rid of Winblows and get a Mac, or format the hard drive and install a real, and decent operating system like GNU/Linux, such as Ubuntu (not my personal favourite, but many newbies swear by it):
http://www.ubuntu.com/
Of course, Photoshop CS and CS2 won't run in Linux land (nor do any of the Canon utilities), and they won't run via WINE either (a sort of emulation tool for running Windows based applications in Linux). Your best bet there is to have a legal version of Windows (2000 or XP are good choices), run VMWare and do your Photoshopping within a virtual instance of 2000/XP. Since Linux is a much more secure operating system than anything out of Redmond, you can do away with anti virus software, firewall software, anti spyware software, etc etc. There is a learning curve, but, in the long term, you probably wouldn't regret it.
It always amazes me that Canon and Adobe can port their respective software packages to Apple's OS X but won't port to Linux, citing the reasoning that "there isn't enough numbers to justify it". Funny thing is, more people use Linux as their desktop operating system worldwide, than use OS X. I'm not bagging OS X, it's a fine operating system, probably the best in the world, it's just that Apple, as a company leaves me cold.
edit: apologies, I forgot to actually give you some troubleshooting tips.
1. I presume you are using Internet Explorer? If so, download and install Mozilla FireFox. Try viewing the Quicktime movies from within FireFox and see if the same problem persists. This should eliminate IE causing the problems. Make sure you have the latest versions of IE, FireFox and QuickTime.
2. Try clearing the temporary internet files, cookies and log out of the system and log back in.
3. Try another normal user account, if that doesn't work, then try logging on as local administrator and seeing if the problem persists.

Keep the fanboy stuff to a minimum. Selling his computer and switch over all his licensing is not a viable solution to run Quicktime. There are other programs that can read .mov files that use less resources, don't run in the tray or as a service.

Do a cntrl/alt/delete and stop the file monitor.

Problem: Photoshop CS3 painfully slow opening images or new windows.
Temporary cure: Stop the 'printer spooler' service to verify the problem
Permanent cure: Delete any networked printers that are no longer connected or accessible across the network.
CS3 and my networked printer worked fine with XP Pro...the problem only became apparent after clean installing Vista (Ultimate) and in my case the printer was installed on another (XP) pc
Difficult to say wether this is a CS3, Vista or other problem and the problem has been seen on XP installations, but if I can save just one person going through the grief I went through to bottom this problem, the post belongs here!
Biggest tips I can give on Vista:
1/ do a clean install, not an upgrade.
Too many issues to list here.
2/Always create a restore point before upgrading drivers (should be created automatically I think)
I accepted a driver update for my built in Network Adapter which ground my download/network speeds to a virtual halt.
'Rolling back' the driver fixed the problem.

Compatibility issues with Vista. I only have one piece of advise. Get rid of that heap of badly coded crap. It was Vista that led to me saying I would never use a Microsoft Operating System again. Since I changed I dont have compatibility issues and I very rarely have any crashes/freezes. I now use Mac OS X 10.5 and for my photography it is unbeatable.

Having just had Vista installed on a new computer and purchased an Epsom 3800 printer I am having no luck in getting it to print. It started out ok then ceased to work. I have had the new drivers installed and it worked for a few prints. Again it,s stopped!
I can no longer get it to print anything. Has anyone any suggestions

this might be old news, but i couldn't find it so thought i'd throw it out there..
canon has relented and updated their codec to allow .CRW files to actually work in Vista - http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0026049.asp (suspiciously i still haven't found it on their US site).. still only works in 32bit Vista, but for those of us without new cameras, it at least lets us see thumbnails in explorer again (yay.)

There is no update on Western Digitals website.I just spent nearly $3K for a Hewlett Packard laser/copier/scanner/printer/fax. They don't support Vista. Their rationale is that it's really intended as a network device, and very few businesses are running Vista on their networks. It's all about XP, 2000, and NT. Funny thing is, I can run it just fine from my Mac running Fusion and Wiindows XP Makes me wonder why I need a Windows machine at all.

I got 2 possible solutions - 1. use a program to delay the startup time of your color profiling utility. I'm using "sartup delayer" http://www.r2.com.au/software.php?page=2&show=startdelay I set the delay for 65 seconds, and then the correct profile is being loaded and not reseted anymore. I think different systems load a bit differently, so you have to play with this a little bit. 2. The other solution is to run msconfig and under startup uncheck Nvidia compatible vista driver (and restart). This works, but I don't know if unchecking it can cause some other problems and I'll be happy to hear if someone does.

It's been solved long ago. You just uncheck the nVidia startup items in msconfig. Either nVidia's or Colorvision's installer is not catching this.
My money is on BOTH Colorvision and nVidia not knowing what the hell is going on. Your computer will run just fine with the nVidia stuff turned off in startup.

I recently posted the following on another thread and thought it would be worthwhile repeating here....
I'm running Vista on five machines at home -
1 * Home Premium 32 bit on a Dell XPS 420 PC (Quad Core, 3GB) for 3 weeks (new machine),
1 * Home Premium 32 bit Philips X59 laptop (Core 2 Duo, 2GB) since September 07,
1 * Ultimate 32 bit on a home built Shuttle SN95G5 PC (Athlon 64 3000, 1GB) since March 07,
1 * Ultimate 32 bit on a Philips X66 laptop (Core 2 DUO ULV, 1GB) since September 07,
1 * Home Premium 64 bit on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop (Core 2 Duo, 2GB) for about a week so far but several months on 32 bit before that. This is my main workhorse, which is used for up to 16 hours each day.
All are working perfectly and I simply don't have a problem with Vista in any of the flavours mentioned above.
I have implemented a minor fix to my XPS M1710 laptop to get my monitor profile to stay put after booting (disable an nVidia startup item) and that is solid as a rock. Apart from that I have had no need for any jiggery pokery to get Vista to work properly.
For the most part I strip out all the manufacturer supplied crapware (especially McAfee and any "support" software) or simply install the OS from scratch and try to keep my systems clean and tidy. Works for me :)
Here's my software list on the 64 bit laptop. I haven't bothered installing CS3 but I never had a problem with it when I had VHP32 installed. I'm happy that my system is lean enough by avoiding installing crap on it. I don't feel the need to perform open heart surgery on the OS itself. I used to fiddle with disabling services in the XP days but these days I just can't be bothered to muck around trying to undermine the OS.

The final release of SP1 for Vista was released to some of us geeks... I mean TechNet Subscribers. I have it installed on my XPS if anyone wants me to do some simple checking or testing for them. Obviously, hardware compatibility testing may be a bit difficult if I don't have the same hardware, but if you are interested, just send me a Private Message.

Haven't had as much time to test some of the things I wanted to, but I can tell ya that the network file transfers are faster, even faster than they were with the release candidate SP1 patches. Transferring files to and from CompactFlash cards seems faster, even using a USB Multicard reader.

I've recorded a couple of videos of my year old Dell XPS M1710 laptop, running Vista Home Premium 64 bit. The purpose is to stress test the machine with multiple apps open and a lot of concurrent multi-processing. The machine performance is flawless.
Hardware specs are....
Intel T7400 Core 2 Duo 2.16Ghz processor
2GB RAM
120GB 5,400 rpm HDD
nVidia 7950GTX graphics
Applications I run are....
Task Manager - actively monitoring RAM and CPU utilisation
IE7 - playing a streaming YouTube video
Windows Media Player - playing music with visualisation graphics
VLC Media Player - playing a 140MB .mp4 file from my HDD
Canon DPP - processing raw files to jpegs
-> spawns a separate task for the conversions
Lightroom - processing raw files to jpegs
Picasa 2 - monitoring jpeg output folder and populating its own library
Windows Explorer - monitoring jpeg output folder
Digiguide TV Schedule planner/alerter - background (it does check each minute for alerts)
Outlook 2003 - background - (checking mail every 5 minutes)
Word 2003 - background
Excel 2003 - background
Powerpoint 2003 - background
Canon EOS Utility - background
Canon Zoombrowser - background
Photomatix Pro HDR - background
Focus Magic - background
I recorded two videos - one showing apps being started up and executing, and then as an afterthought, a second video showing apps being closed and the recovery of RAM and CPU as a result.
First video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QKQ4vWqeQk
Second video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foMFzqi8vA0
p.s. as, in that first video, you can't see how quickly the apps start, because Task Manager is in the way, here is another video specifically showing app startup and web browsing performance. This video is not a stress test.
Third video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLI_mw2FsxA

My current headache is not so much caused by M'soft as it is by HP. I bought a very expensive multi-function machine from them last year, and it's not fully compatible with Vista. According to them, it's primarily intended as a network device for large businesses, and none of them are going to be using Vista on their networks. In the meantime, my choices are:
1. downgrade my new PC to XP (and void the warranty)
2. go back to using the old PC (which has gotten very buggy)
3. run the HP software from my Mac using VMware Fusion and Windows XP.
4. Give up a lot of the functionality of the printer.
Unless and until HP decides they're going to get on the Vista bandwagon, I'm stuck with a $3,000 printer that doesn't do anything a $300 laser printer can't.
Thanks HP.

I too have a printer for which HP can't be bothered to provide Vista compatible drivers. It's one of the very first Bluetooth printers on the market - Deskjet 995c - and I bought it in 2001 for about £280. At first I was miffed (I still am with HP) but really it has nothing to do with Vista or Microsoft.
I did run dual boot, with Vista and XP, for a while, just so I could print, but printing is actually of so little interest to me that I dropped the XP partition altogether. What I am able to do is to run the printer with Vista compatible drivers from one model down, without the Bluetooth. This means that so long as I can connect via USB, which of course I can, then I can use the printer just fine.
Way to go, HP !!!!
But as I hope my little videos illustrate, it seems Vista is a perfectly satisfactory platform as an OS. I really struggle to comprehend how I could have a better computing experience by switching to a MacBook Pro, or back to XP. It surely couldn't be any quicker or smoother in day to day use.
(I don't want any smart Alecs telling me that at least my DJ 995c would work :) )
Here's HPs feeble excuse. My printer was under six years old when I first had a retail Vista DVD installed on my machine, and I'm pretty sure they were available for another year after that - I watched the prices dropping :(

I have Sp1. I got it from microsoft.com
It is a bit of a navigation though to find the right links. Yhey make it hard to find on purpose since it's still beta.
Zero problems. BUT - it does not like to copy large volumes of RAW images very quickly. The DRM may be getting processed on all my images since they are copyrighted. A zip file or similar copies normally.

My Vista Experience thus far.
Bridge CS3 acts a bit odd under Vista. I performed and upgrade from XP to Vista. Things went smoothly for the most part, with a few notable exceptions:
Nero had to be uninstalled. The installer was seriously borked, so I had to go manually trapsing through the registry removing all signs of the software. After this 2 hour or so endeavor, the 6+ hour upgrade took. According to the warning about nero, I could reinstall the program. I did. I tried it, it limped along at the slowest DVD speed, and burned an unreadable DVD. Nero's fix? Buy their latest software.
Norton Antivirus, of course had some issues, and had a similar fix. My HP Scanner was turned into a $200 brick. (Thankfully, it was a hand-me-down, so in reality, it was just a very large free brick)
I run a web server on this computer, so one of my concerns was the webserver would stop running, Vista didn't disappoint. No matter what I tried, I could not get Apache 1.3 to run. I finally broke down and upgraded to Apache 2.0, which seems to work just fine, despite the dire warnings in the PHP documentation about running PHP under apache 2.0. A service related to this site wouldn't run either. In the process of debugging it to find out what was going on (the service manager kept coming back immediately with "This service didn't respond in a timely manner" heck, it only gave it a microsecond to respond...), I wound up reinstalling the service, and suddenly it worked. Hmm..
Now, on to Bridge... If anyone has a solution for this, let me know.
A couple things, one is a bit of an annoying niggley thing, the preview display goes wonky occasionally, if any other window is overlaying Bridge. I discovered this after I installed the driver for my Wacom tablet, and Windows began displaying the tab on the edge of the screen for tablet entry. Bridge seemingly refused to display correctly when maximized. While working in a smaller window is OK, I prefer to have as much screen real-estate when working with images so I can get the preview as big as possible (I know loupe is available, but I find it inconvenient) After removing the tablet tab, all is well, Sort of. The preview still messes up if there's a menu on the screen, but then I always had weirdness with Bridge and menus, it's just a different kind of weirdness, now.
For the record, this is a GeForce 7600 GS, with the latest nVidia drivers.
But, the most annoying issue with bridge affects how I work with it. I use labels frequently to tag photos I want to later process, so I had Bridge set not to require the Ctrl key when applying a label (I could just press 7, for example to label a photo "Print") But, under Vista bridge stopped retaining this setting, which meant when I selected a bunch of pictures and pressed 7 to label it, my selected items jumped to something containing the number 7, unselecting those images I was about to mark. So, I go back into the preferences screen and uncheck the option, and all is well, until I exit bridge, I come back and the behavior reverts to the default. No matter what I do, I cannot get that one option to stick, though everything else seems to work. I think I'm being punished for wanting to use Vista.
I'm thinking the slogan for Vista should be "Windows Vista: For the masochist in all of us" :D

Guineh

Upgrade. And don't tell me to do a clean install. I won't I have software on that machine that is no longer obtainable, and I really don't want to go through the whole configuring the webserver and database server again.
