Thanks Adam :) I just used a couple of tungsten lights, no flash. One 200w bulb as a main light fired through a diffuser and the other two with 100w coloured bulbs to create a bit of interest so all pretty make do.

35L left, 85 1.8 right

Are they both processed the same way? If so, the 35L makes the image POP so much more than the 85/1.8, and I wouldn't have expected the difference to be so great. And I'm assuming the focus point is on the magazine in both photos.

They were processed similarly. By no means exact and the photos were taken about 2 hours apart. A few other things changed. It's by no means a scientific test, however, the 35L beats the 85 1.8 in every category minus focus speed.

yes i am, and am trying to get used to it. the low light capability is great, the bowl was taken in very dim light. i think am often slow when pressing the shutter button from the focus beep to the actual exposure, and with the razor thin dof it would have moved after i have focus it.

I can't see ever using an 85 like I use my 35...I have a feeling I would be restricted by the tight framing. Sometimes I feel like I want a 24L but then I take a step backward, to the left or right, recompose the shot, and it comes out even better ;)...I haven't used my 17-40 in two weeks and my 70-200 in well over 2 months...This lens is like heroin (not that I would know of course.

Picked this up today - my first L prime. Sacrificed my first L zoom (70-200 4L IS) to fund it, but the tele zoom wasn't my style and it went largely unused. Might get a 200 f/2.8 (or something) in the near future, but happy on the wider end for now! I'm just excited about having something wide enough and fast enough indoors, and I love that it has that same, almost-touch-the-front-element MFD as the 17-40.

With the way money is going, maybe we're going to have to satisfy ourselves with products made or already here (as in buying used) in the USA if importing is going to be so much, who knows if it's better to buy now or to wait it out or in some ways we might end up like Cuba with certain products, not that extreme I'd hope but you get the idea. Seriously it does not look like the world wide recession is going to cause the prices to go down, but it's kind of obvious they will continue to go up, this isn't a short term deal world wide, it looks like a completely restructure regarding how the monetary system works.

For some that will be back to those that have and those that have not, the financial margins that allowed us to charge and work it out seem to be going away.

I've been without debt for almost ten years, I do use a charge card but it gets paid off at the end of the month. Sometimes it's hard but in the long run it sure keeps down the worries when work gets slow knowing I don't owe anymore than I already have money to pay.

It does make me think it might be prudent to have some kind of second body though and the better off I am now, the better off I'll be over the next three years or so. Thank goodness I have a good set of the "L" lenses.

But is this happening in the computer market, that would affect a huge part of the world no matter where you live, raw materials, manufacturing etc.

My understanding is that the same thing that happened with the 24L last year - the MkII was released, slightly improved, weather sealed and with a price increase of more than $500. The 24L and 35L are/were similar in design, so there's speculation that a 35L MkII might be on the way, based on the refreshed 24L.

Oh, BTW, this is my 4th Canon refurb'd piece through Adorama - they've all been like new

LOL! Im wasted right now but I think we should set something straight, at least I am going to...Almost non of the images "I" post up are even close to straight out of camera (MOST of the time)...especially images shot straight into the sun or bright morning light. (many require very delicate curves adjustments/ being masked and all that - either in RAW or later on)

There is a very decent amount of post processing going on... an I think pat/echo and others will agree...While the sharpness and IQ are there for sure - there is also a fair amount that goes into each image depending on the shot.

Obviously it depends etc. But the images I end up with now I wouldn't even have though possible a year ago? Really, you learn a LOT in here! :p

That's just my opinion tho ...Some of my shots have regular RAW edits and then in CS4 have 3-5 layers of selective curves adjustments haha...not to mention a very sophisticated web sharpening action I stumbled across on FM (that I also tweak till is right).

Sorry but there has just been a clusterfu%k of AMAZING work being posted in the 35L thread - that I feel if I was in here a year ago...(id run out and get this lens purely on what I have been seeing)

Now take this as you will (im not trying to be stuck up in ANY way lol my sh&t is far surpassed by others in here, really. Im drunk so roll with me lol geez) but I just want others to know that there is a decent deal that goes into these images ;)

To tell you the truth I feel like this forum is contributing to the shortage of 35L's out there hahah! Really! Because they weren't that hard to get a couple months before xmas :D

I guess I see your point.
Pretty obvious to me a lot of the images posted in here lately have had a good amount of PP happening.

So you gotta hit these threads with a huge grain of salt.

PP is just part of the package. It's the end results that counts so...

That said, I am a big fan of your work wallybud. Great, great stuff!

Haha Thanks Nick, ditto right back at ya;)

Yeah I wasn't aware though way while back that it was this involved to tell you the truth...I mean I did PP'ing on my other lens' but it wasn't until the 35 that my eyes kind of opened and everything clicked. Its a little weird. I see all of these amazing shot in her and think, man...I hope these images are going up somewhere important or making someone REALLY happy because they should be! They are AMAZING! Everyones!

I also feel like us 35 users are more dedicated to showing what the lens can do than in other threads...If there was a competition it would be between the the 85 thread and the 35 thread ;)... we just keep posting and posting haha (I don't even bother to create my own threads anymore in landscape or anywhere else?) I just want to know what other 35 users think of my images :):):):)!

I find the 35L inspiring to use - like the 85L is - and although it would be limiting could manage to live with just those two. So many really great pictures being posted on these two threads I find it helps me to want to do better. I've only been in to photography for about 4 years and have loads to learn but nothing beats seeing what people are doing here to make you push further :) Looking at Pat's galleries for example is enough to get me thinking how poor my work is and then think about how to do better!

BTW, I use the odd bit of PP but generally Photoshop (I only use Elements) is for running Neat Image to de-noise and unsharp. 95% of any changes I apply are done in LR, mostly to do a bit of cropping and curves.

:)

I agree with everything you guys said.

It's often misleading for people to stumble on the archived lens threads. Granted the 35L, 50L, and 85L threads have great work in them, they also have less than ideal work. In the end, a lens is only a tool, and no lens will make you a drastically better photographer.

A lot goes into a good image. It's an equation that's always changing, it's not simply 5D2 + 35L = great image. It helps, sure, but it's only a small part of the equation...

I got my 35L when I only had my 40D. Absolutely loved the focal length. It was my one and only lens for while actually. In fact, I'm finding it difficult to to adjust to using it on a FF now... but I certainly am embracing the change ;)

My LensALign arrived last night. My 35L was the first lens I tested. I always felt the focus was slightly off.

I needed a +8 Backwards Microfocus correction to fix how much it was front focusing! All better now!

Now my copy gives me results as intended!

Do you guys have some sample pictures taken with this lens on your crop body? Preferably at f1.4. I wanna see how the depth of field and out of focus area is like.

All the shots here are awesome but all taken with full frame. Is this lens as amazing on non-full frame bodies?

Thx!

I just have to say how much I love my 35L. It is really just such and amazing lens, and I absolutely LOVE the focal length on my 1DII.

I'm not kidding when I say that if I had to choose between my 35L and my 85L, the 85 would be gone before you finished the question...that's how much I love the 35L. (And I really, really, really like my 85L).

TaDa

I'd go 35L over 85L as well, but that's purely based on focal length preference. I find 85 to be a niche length. That being said, the 85L is one of the most amazing pieces of glass that I've ever shot with. Ridiculously sharp and amazing colors and contrast

Oh...don't get me wrong...I absolutely love my 85L. I use it nearly as much as my 35L. It's just that with the 85 f/1.8 and 100 f/2 being so exceptional as well, it's not much of a loss to go to one of those from the 85L. However, the dropoff from the 35L to the 35 f/2 or 28 f/1.8 is huge.

That was a funny shoot. I was getting loads of what I thought were really good shots, willing (unusual) subject and good all round vibe. I've sweated all day processing the pictures to get what I 'saw' and know are there but think it's simply down to the fabric of the studio being too close to skin tone.

Anyway, that studio is Rockfield Studios in Wales. It's been running 45 years and zillions of hits have been recorded there, eg, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.... JBL's are pretty rare to find in a studio these days :)

To bad because those are/were incredible loud speakers. I had a pair of JBL L220s and a pair of L65s years ago. The 220s weighed 110 lbs a piece. The dynamic range and clarity were just amazing.
