Maybe I'm only seeing them out of stock at resellers because I'm trying to use the live.com cashback option to knock $80 off the total.

Hah that video is awesome. Very nice quality too.

Here are my first efforts from the 35L. Think it's going to take some getting used to but I MUCH prefer the focal length over 50mm so far.

#1: Quite like this, will probably convert it to b+w and add it to my recession story.
http://www.pbase.com/image/110131169.jpg

#2: 100% crop (straight out of cam). Focus on the 'J'. Think I got a sharp copy?

#3: Churns out some nice bokeh ey.

Haha. You should see the huge canvas! Seriously though, the 5D2's resolution shines when you make large books/prints. My 40D looked pretty similarly downrezzed to 800x long. I didn't notice how awesome 21mp's were until I went 16x24 and larger.

Pat, your shots make me want to go out and buy your set up. Stop it.

As you probably know, his setup is only one factor in his images. Yes he shoots at / near wide open most of the time, which can be accomplished with a number of lenses. I think more importantly (and often overlooked in most image threads) are his eye for composition, his soft skills of interacting with his subjects to bring out the best in them for the photos, and his post processing skills / style. So while I agree a 35L + 5DMKII would be schweeeeet, I think it's the least important factor in his style (which he has really defined).

for my use, the 50 1.4 just isn't even on a body that much.. i hold on to it because, well it was my first prime.. and on the 40D, works for the 80MM length.. so it gives me the flexibility..

when i do the wedding job, i just use my 24-70 on my 5DMKII, and the 35L on the 5D classic.. super combos...

Can you take a tripod mounted shot of a person with the 35L and 50 wide open? Just so I can see the difference in framing relative to subject distance?

i have the tripod, and the 35L, but i don't have the 50 1.2L, just the 50 1.4..

you just want to see the difference between the framing of the 35 and the 50.. (tripod won't move, subject wont move.)

I see, nice spot. I have to look out for that kind of lighting angle.

The 85L is nice; it wasn't a matter of being worth it or not, it was a matter of necessity. I NEED fast primes, especially the 85L and 35L. Tomorrow will be its first wedding shoot. I don't currently have the skill to do such an expensive lens justice but perhaps I'll still get a few good shots with it.

As soon as JR.com gets 35L back in stock I'll be buying one of them.

My retouching is a reflection of the mood I feel the photo is in (or the mood I'm in). If the photo gives the feeling of a definite mood to myself, then I like to think it will do the same for others and I'm done processing it.

I don't think my stuff is on the caliber of that other guy's photo post. But regardless, I need a 35L for all the low light situations I run into in Vegas.

sounds like you need 2 more canon products.. lol..

1. 5D MKII
2. 35 1.4 L...

those will handle about anything low light VEGAS will throw at you.. if that combo can't handle it, then the picture is not worth taking.. BTW you do awesome work.

Thanks, I'm glad you think so but I see others on this and FM forums and know I'm nothing in comparison.

Can't afford the 5D II nor can I justify it for its cost. The 35L I can afford and justify; it gives me 2 stops more light and narrower DoF. I know the 85L and 35L together cost more than the 5D II, but the lens really does make a bigger difference than the body sometimes, and when I bought the 85L I didn't have the money for both 85L and 35L. Now with a bunch of jobs coming up over the next week I'm actually going to make enough extra.

others work and one's work is just your own subjective feeling. "as long as the client is happy?" is my motto.. and most of the time or all the time the client is happy.

others work may look amazing, because they and their client had time to do the shots..

my limitations i have noticed is the ability to get a good venue, or time after the ceremony and the couple to work with..

it seems like weddings never go on time, and the make up time countermeasure is to cut out the photography time. my last wedding the mother didn't want to make the guest wait too long and made the daughter compromise, and cut the photography time out by 1/2.

i still got paid the full amount but i felt bad for the couple. i had stuff set up downtown to do, and wanted to do some creative stuff.. oh well

Last night I actually pushed my MKII and 35 to the limit...SO DARK!
-couldn't focus 40% of the time

-shutter down around 1/20 1/30
-and all to "just get the shot" not even properly exposed haha

If those are from the exact same position, then there is a major difference between the two. The perspective is way different. The second shot, I assume is the 5DII, shows much greater distance between the car and the edge of the piano. The first shot has more compression between the car and the middle of the piano.

drPheta

Wierd. I would think the 40D would make the FOV smaller, thus less foreground in front of the piano.

jwcdds

I have a feeling Phamster didn't take those photos at exactly the same distance away from the little car.

The size of the car is nearly identical, which leads me to believe that he was closer to the car when taking the photo on FF.

phamster
24th of March 2009 (Tue), 06:42
it wasn't taken at the same distance, that would be a dead give away. i took and cropped to make the car look almost the same.

but i think Form know what to look for as the tall tell signs of the 35L perspective.

anyways..it shows that the lens not the body makes the difference. the picture quality is about the same for my eyes..

the difference in the cost of the 2 bodies is $1800, and the image difference isn't showing me that.. he he..

35 is so versitle because of three big factors:
1. It's somewhat wide.
2. It has a close MFD.
3. It's f/1.4

All of those combined equate to a fantastic shooting experience. Shooting wide and pushing in tight (often a foot away from my subjects) allows me to express so much more expression than a tele would.
