35 is so versitle because of three big factors:
Shooting wide and pushing in tight (often a foot away from my subjects) allows me to express so much more expression than a tele would.
but lets say, would you use that for a portrait for senior pictures?
i would like some examples please.. doesn't have to be senior picture but just portraits with wide and pushing tight.. <--- doesn't that distort faces?

It does slightly distort faces at MFD. Then again, my clients aren't typically looking for your traditional airbrushed overly posed images. If they were, JcPenny's would be a much better (and cost effective) solution for them.
Technical perfection is highly over rated, imo.
As for examples, most of the shots I post in here are pretty "wide and tight".

IMO the lens has an amazing vignette between 1.4 and 1.8 (not so much at 1.8) but awesome at 1.4...I cant speak for his images of coarse;) But id say either lens only or 50/50 as I don't have a program to check the exif?
Phamster - The dark background is due to all the lights in the room being out. The softness you talking about I assume is the light and not the lens ;) ...hehe ( at 1.4 I think only half the word Reserve is in focus) umm Im not sure if this is right but I believe my 580 was bounced off a white left wall (diffuser on) and the 430 was shot straight down from about 4 feet? Im still getting this lighting down as we usually work with battery packs, light meters, and other expensive crap I can't afford so Im trying to learn from the ground up

I could've been working when that happened, and anyway they're usually gone within 5 minutes if it's a good deal.
I just resorted to buying an E condition used one from adorama. I pray it's a good copy. Used, got 3% cashback, so total was about $1030 shipped. Painful but JR's cashback offer is no longer valid and this was the next least expensive option. Plus at least I get a 90 day warranty, not great but I can't do much about that. It's still enough to send in for a tune-up/repair if it's DoA.

I wouldn't worry too much about buying used/re-conditioned equipment from Adorama. I have never had any issue with them... I bought a refurbished 35L, refurbished 70-200 f/4L, and a used 17-35 f/2.8L from them... all perform excellent and in near perfect condition.

Well yes I do actually, the 85L came in really handy yesterday because of the speed. For the first time ever, I was able to get about 1/160 sec. at ISO1600 using f/1.2, which was enough to stop motion and catch snaps inside caesar's palace. Now mind you those shots weren't really that good, but it was more of a test anyway. In the future I'll be able to use that for good photos, and it will be really nice to have.

I have confirmed that this lens was a great buy for me. I spent this weekend (and last) shooting with the 35L almost exclusively. A FEW 11-16 and fisheye shots. But the 35L has done well to replace my 28/1.8 and 50/1.4 in one fell swoop.
I'm still working on the past two weekends images, but the images are spectacular. The f1.4 aperture is a bit hard to work when shutter speeds are around 1/30 +/- a stop or two. But it still delivers fantastic shots.

If you only want that one effect, then yes, but there's SO much more a tilt shift can do, that can't be done with post processing.

Glass seems perfect, lens seems to function normal, has some white/discoloration on the focus ring, has one set of distinct patterned scratches on one area of the barrel by the Canon logo, and a few other minor scratches/dings at random places on the barrel. Date code UTxxxx, was claimed to be in E condition. Lens caps seem used a bit, hood seems new.

Of those last two posted, for the second the 85L really would give you a much more diffuse background than the best the 35L can do. Just for mental comparison. That's the biggest advantage the 85L has. In the first the 85L would be able to diffuse the background somewhat more, but there would be no point.

I've noticed I don't shoot subjects further then 10' away often with my 35L for that exact reason. And I like that slight distortion and subject intimacy you get from shooting close with the 35L.
form

I agree, the perspective that draws you closer to the subjects and moves the background farther away really seems to give the 35L's shots a more personal feel in some ways.

Hehe, for a moment I thought I had posted a 35L in the 85L thread :)
Nope, handheld. I actually had to sneak up on the couple sitting on the bench. I gave them a scare when they heard the shutter go :)

I used my 35L last night for the first time, but it seemed to not be the lens I needed for what I was doing, and so I will have to try again tonight. Just about everything I did with the 35L could've been done as good or better with a standard zoom - which I finally brought out halfway into the shoot solely because I could zoom in and out, and the environment didn't call for narrow DoF or f/1.4 anyway. A somewhat disappointing first try in the field, but the 85L saw almost no use either so it may not have been the lens' fault. Just the wrong environment for a prime and the right one for a zoom.
I think I'm so used to getting that range with a zoom that I'm really not used to working with a wide prime. I've never had a wide prime before in my life, so it feels really awkward to use. That's probably why it seemed like the zoom was better for the occasion. Gotta force myself more.

i was in the same boat.. when i got the 35L i wasn't loving it.. for the same reasons you mention above..
i got the 35L and in my mind the 85L combo for wedding applications, but i haven't bought the 85L yet.. instead i got the 5DMKII, so now.. my combo is 24-70 with the 5DMKII and the 35L on the 5D classic..
those two combos right now works best for me.. but when i do the wedding. 80% of my work comes from the 24-70..
when there is time to use the 35L then i use it.. so. it is the matter of me learning what is usable with the 35L and using it more.. i am still not fully comfortable using it.. i worry about the distorted noses for portrait use.. but now i just take the shots anyway..
i have a engagment session today.. so i will force myself to use the 35L today..
post them up later.

After shooting the 35L, I found myself weaseling into places, comfort zones, and physical locations I haven't usually shot from.
Part of using only primes comes from the ability to "see" the fl like it's second nature to you. That comes with time. I'm starting to see the world in my 35L's perspective and I've been instantly running to where I need to be in order to get the shot in my head.

I shot with my boss' 85 today...MAN I would have to get use to that...it's really tight. It's also less personal and I didn't like that at all. I was so far back and kept wanting to just put my 35 back on. I didn't have time for the 50 but he's going to let me borrow it so I can make sure I want the 1.4 instead of the 1.2 ;)

You can flood this thread, as far as I'm concerned. They are spectacular. You, and all who have contributed to this thread are the ones who convinced me that 35L is the lens for me.
I am still getting used to the lens, and sometimes it just doesn't work for me. But I come back to this thread, and I am given a smack in the face and reminded that it is me, not the lens, who is not worthy.
All are good, but I just can't keep my eyes off 10. Wonderful, wonderful work, and thanks for sharing.

Day two of using the 35L. I forced myself to use it this time, but eventually I still ended up resorting to standard zoom for the range and putting the 85L on the other camera. I also forced myself to use it wide open or nearly wide open, but the focus...I don't know, doesn't seem as adept for reception work. I'll keep trying but if I just can't learn to like the lens I may return it (if they take returns).
I'm actually finding the 85L to be more useful than the 35L so far. Of course I imagine it's just habit of preferring telephoto...
