One of the reasons I shot this besides to obvious was the strong yellow and red which I think gets lost in the tint.

Hey Form thats the time to get out of the comfort zone and not even bring the usual lenses. Learning to see wide for some can take some time. Try and shoot a wedding with just an 85 and a 35. I shot with Blads for years using pretty much a 50, 80 and 120. Mostly 50 & 120. The few wedding I've shot for friends since moving into commercial I have shot pretty much everything with a 35 and an 85 FF...

I noticed prices on this lens had gone up by about $200 recently on Amazon. Even the used ones are going for over $1400 now. Don't know if this is a result of the economy or shortages or what, but luckily Calumet still had a few in stock at the original prices of $1199 so I was able to get one from there. Don't know how many are left.

I can go nuts on PP deciding which one I like as well.

Sometimes I get frustrated alone.

For your traffic post on the other page, I like the original. The later one is just too much for me. but for your portraits, I like them all. Just my 5 cents.

Well the extra stops of light and pretty deep DoF for full body shots makes it pretty usable in dark situations; I can get away with less light. Am I learning to like it? Not yet, but I'm forcing myself to use it and get used to it. I'm still not keen on having so much background in my photos.

I just drooled on al 127 pages of post in this thread and I'm convinced to get this lens.
I was saving for the 70-200 2.8 IS but hearing some rumors about a mark 2 version of that lens, maybe I should wait a bit.
I'm also interested in the 85L but I'm thinking it is a bit to long on my 40D.
A weekend ago, I shot only with my 50mm 1.4 on a holliday with my family and I sometimes found it to long, so I think the 35L will fill my needs.
But also on that point I heard some rumors about a mark 2 version because the 24L has got one...
Eventually I'll get all three of them, but when I'm paying that much of money I would like the best of the best, if you know what I mean :-).
Can some of you help me out?

But I live in Belgium, Europe. Here's not a large second hand buying market, not where I know from...

You are right that I have to buy what I need now, but it's a difficult decision...

Hi Jelle (I will keep it in english :))

I'm also from belgium and you can find quite some lenses second hand. Try the belgiumdigital.be forum or marktplaats.nl!
I bought most of my lenses second hand, also the 35L, but that's a lens you don't see that often second hand here.

good luck

Hallo, altijd leuk iemand van eigen streek te ontmoeten :-).

So, if I'm right, when I want to sell my 35L or maybe the 70-200 (I think it's also a lens that passes every week in that forum) that it'll sell immediatly?

Thanks!

Ja altijd leuk :)

It's always hard to predict how fast something's going to sell, but normally: yes.
I sold the 24L in a week and the 24-105 in a few hours :)

@JelleVerherstraeten:

Good lenses at a fair price always sell, I wouldn't worry about that. In fact, on sites like belgiumdigital.com you have to be really quick if you're looking to buy good secondhand glass (especially L lenses). And anyway, not everyone always wants the latest and greatest of everything, so the "old" version will certainly sell if you keep it in mint condition.

And it never pays to wait for the next version of anything, I know that from experience . It'll just make you miss out on hundreds of great shots, and hundreds of hours of fun, and when you finally do get that "next" version, you'll just wonder why you waited that long.

As for the 35L, I don't want it. I need it. Desperately

But as a pour student, I have to chose between those, and that's making it hard for me :-).
Thanks for the reply!

Nicely done. I tried pulling the data on this, I couldn't. What Fstop was this shot at?

Since I went full frame I've been debating between getting the 35L versus a 50/1.4 (Canon or Sigma). I'm liking the slightly wider prespective of the 35.

This lens still goes against my inclinations for so many things. I have to frequently go back to a longer focal length for the sake of having less distortion on faces and extremeties.

if you send it back you might not get another for a while if its backordered. If you send it to canon they may fix it they may not. They may partially fix it?

well quick update, I sent it in, they sent it back with the typical "we couldn't figure out what's wrong but it was malfunctioning and electrical repairs were done" kinda answer, and ..... CA is still the same. I tried it on a 5D, 50D and 30D, all 3 same results, it's still visible at f/8.0 ! I tried my buddy's copy of the lens .... no CA even at f/1.4 .... it's going back to Canon for the 2nd time .... I wonder if I should send it to California this time ... I think that's unacceptable from an L lens !

Don't send it to Cali? Send it to canon with images attached> Id be crazy pissed off lol. I wouldn't even bother writing a letter thought. They'll prolly just throw it out ;)

Well, it is going to Canon, but they have 2 locations, one in New Jersey (where I sent it the first time) and one in California .... I am really pissed ! My nifty fifty didn't have any CA ! Neither did my 50 f/1.4 !

yep, that's what I did, I wrote that I thought it was unacceptabke from a Canon L lens !
Also, I tried it on a 30D, 50D and 5D, and same results on all 3 !

Here is a shot, one was taken with my friend's 35L, one with mine .... guess which one is which ;)

but would the 85 pull in all the back ground as the 35? i would have to stand back farther and i would probably not all the trees in the view..

but of course i have never shot with the 85L.. makes me wonder.... maybe next year or so..
