They requested the photo on the back, I didn't really like it. Oh well, I got to pick the front. The images on the cards were shot with the 35L and the photo of said card was shot with the 35L.

I was like that for about 2 weeks after I got my 85L. Then it hit me, I still prefer the uncompressed natural vibes I get from the 35L.
They are both amazing pieces of glass - I just use whatever one suits the task at hand.

I think so to.
I doubted between the 24L and the 35L and tested them both on my 24-105 and I found out that 35mm was the best :-).

Really thinking about picking this lens up!
I have a question, though. To those of you who have the 24-70, do find the 35L redundant at all? I own the 24-70, and 16-35, so adding a FOURTH way of getting 35mm seems a tad overkill...but I really like the look of this lens!
So, is the 35L worth it over and above the 24-70 (set at 35)?
Cheers

This is my experience on crop cameras...
My coworker just bought a 16-35 f/2.8L II for her XSi....I tried it on my 40D and found that the 35L is noticeably sharper when comparing the images @ 35mm, f/2.8.
I think being able to go to f/1.4 alone is worth it.

I don't find it redundant at all - or the 50L, or potentially the 24L when I pick one up. Primes are generally sharper than any zoom, smaller and certainly brighter/faster. I prefer to shoot primes, so always grab those first - then the zoom(s).
A 35L would be your fifth way actually, not fourth! So for you, maybe it's getting a bit... "Common." :D

Surely you mean Third way?
The 35L has a certain look to it when shot wide open and that's the point of using it as well as gaining 2 stops of ligth gathering over an f2.8 zoom.
If your shooting needs fins this lens helpfull then get one. If not, enjoy your 2 current 35mm lenses ;-)
What you have highlighted though is that the current wide offerings from Canon really aren't wide enough for the modern shooting world. years ago a 16-35 combined with a 35-70 and a 70-210. These days the 70-210 has shrunk slightly to a 70-200. The 35-70 has just been pushed at the wide end to no offer 24-70. The 16-35 has been replaced with a mk II version but it hasn't pushed focal length in any direction and it's only gain is IQ. Once upon a time only the pro's bothered with ultra wides and 24mm was considered to be wide enough. It was an expensive luxury. But these days, the digital cropped sensor, has caused this lens to sell and sell.
I really do thing that a 12-24mm is really needed, but one that can fit front filters (grads and polarisers) plus it needs to be sharp wide open. The 24-70/2.8 is so versatile now, it's pushing on the 16-35 now.

and yes, I'm definitely after that 3D look that the 35L provides. I've tried to produce it with the 16-35 and 24-70, but I either don't get enough background blur, or to achieve said blur I'd have to get so close to the subject that it distorts them somewhat.

Use your 16-35mm and go wider and a lot closer. You''ll find the background just melts away. it's a slightly different look because it's a different angle of view and there's more geometric distortion. But give it a go.

Oh but I have! It really does distort people when you get too close. I'll work with it a bit more, though...see what I can get out of it. It's still an AWESOME lens for non-portrait work. Or for when the people are nice and far away, and I'm not trying to get the blur. That, or I need to keep the background super distant from the subject. I HAVE used it for skateboarders...they seem to like the distortion it provides :)

Ok, so as I mentioned above I just recently got a hold of my 35L. I don't have anything I'd share, (yet), but I can see that my 24-70L may have just been rendered obsolete if I can get used to zooming with my feet. ;)

When I critised this lens for it's sharpness wide open, I was just moaning about it's sharpness. It's still the best wide lens from Canon's stables. From a low light point of view, f1.4 is SO much faster than an f2.8 zoom. It has a creative look which is spectacular in the right hands (as many of the posed photographs on this forum show) and I am often tempted to get one...not that I particularly need one. For me, a 50L is more usefull but that's even softer wide open than the 35L that I some times rent.
I just love the way this lens works with kids and environmental portraits...just stunning.

Thanks, Allen :) . This was officially my first street pic with the 35L and of course I shot it at f/1.4, lol. I used the lens on Saturday night to photograph a family gathering of 16 in a candlelit restaurant. Paid work, so no photos to share, but the lens performed well. Obvious to me is that I need to wrap my mind around a wide lens that is as fast as this one is. But I will :D . Your pics with the 35L have been inspirational, btw. Thanks for that and keep on sharing :) .

i am seriously thinking about going down to Samy's and buying this lens right now.
i've never had such a hard time deciding to go through with getting a lens the way i am now, more so just because i spent about $1600 less than a week ago getting the 135L and 85/1.8..
ive read plenty of reviews and have looked up lots of photos taken with this thing, tell me why i absolutely must have this lens and make my decision easier please...

I really like your pp.
Is it based on a template/recipe from LR/PS etc or do you do your own?
Would you mind sharing.
I particularly like the kind of bluey/browny/greeny "off" look in this shot and the shots of the guy smoking in the 135L thread.
thanks

If you leave skittles in vodka (or any alcohol over 20%) for 24hrs+, it turns into a fruity tasty drink. It's delicious. Vegas thing....
