Tareq, I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming you were being nice... so...
The quote you quoted said I didn't think the 14L (note, it's quite a different lens to the 35L) was worth the money for me (and it's not, because I only buy lenses I need, not heaps of lenses for no reason). Keeping with that theme. I always have to save for what I buy because, well... I'm not rich. ;)
"I can't afford it" = "I need to save for it", not "I'll die of starvation if I buy it".
Also, who said I want it so badly? I am trying to decide between the 28 1.8, 24L II and the 35L (as I don't have money to burn). I take it I'm allowed to post wherever I want while I make up my mind right?! :p
Despite being a highly trained ninja  I certainly won't be "disappearing" until I own one.
Good for you, i just quoted last post of you but i was referring to all of your previous posts mostly that you are going back and forth about 35L and another lenses, but i am waiting you when you get a new prime lens whatever it is and see your results ;)

A24mm lens is NOT a lens for a single person portait....but it is the perfect focal length for "people in their environment" or documentary photography, which is why the 24-70 lens is so loved by the press.
Or the 16-35 on a 1 series :)

I certainly will post on whatever thread is appropriate when I get the lens I eventually get. :D

Precisely. :)
Mainly I want a lens to use for as many purposes as possible (everyday prime) that can be used in lowish light without a flash and a lens that can photograph a small group of people (not full length) indoors without too much trouble, but won't look weird when shooting 1 person up sort of "close" (head shot).
I think the look a 35mm gets you on FF is very much like the look of a typical MCU in a movie when shooting 2-3 people next to each other (or one person even).
Nice versatile length and the prime gets me the low light and indoor performance I want.

I think that this is certainly what the 35L is... the only thing is that (I think) you really have to warn people when you intend to take a head-shot - I've noticed that 'regular' (I don't work with models, heh) people are a little put off by how physically close you have to get with the lens.

Agreed. Generally, people will go all squeamish on you when you stick a 35 in their face. If I know I want to do head shots, I'll reach for my 85 or 135 which also provides a more flattering perspective and allow me to better throw the background out of focus.

Right, but for me a lot of the time this will be used as a "people in their environment" lens. Or with my kids, who like to get close to the camera anyway. Head shots not so much. MCU maybe (that's Medium Close Up... something like the "news reader on TV" type shot).

A couple from me, all taken on a film Canon 1V.
Is it me or is it hard to focus wide open? i tend to get some misses. At first i thought my copy of the lens was soft, but i reckon its my own inability to focus the lens properly wide open!
Anyways, here we go.

I've only just recently started to use a 35mm f1.4, it's a lens that I've respected for some time and I have to say it's a lot sharper wide open than my 50mm f1.2! Wow it can focus close! I love it's colour and contrast rendition. It's sharp enough at f1.4, but as others have said before...by f2 it's insanely sharp.

Hammers reached the apex of their technological possibilities long ago. Unless someone makes one of those automatic hammers that pop up on the Simpsons occasionally. :p

Actually there HAVE been certain advances over the past few years in the field of carpentry as far as hammers are concerned... :p Check out the titanium hammers that are now available. Point is they are both tools. 35L, 24L (markI), etc are all MORE then capable of out performing 99.99% of most photographers skill sets.
My humble suggestion? Put that money into something worthwhile. Rebrand, get a cooler blog, get some letterpress cards, buy some sample stuff, invest, take your wife/gf/significant other out to dinner. They are all 100% guaranteed better long term ways of spending your money then upgrading the 35L to the eventually soon-to-be released 35L II.

Well, just look at the 24L and the 24L II, there is a nice chunk of difference, I believe -- Canon wouldn't re-make one of their L's unless they thought they could out do it, at least a little, IMO.
Nevertheless, I'm picking up one of these at the end of the week.

I never said for an upgrade ;) I'm talking for new buyers who don't have the previous model. Meaning, if and when they go to buy a 24L, I'm sure most would pay the additional few hundred for the II, just so they didn't have to deal with the CA the original has wide open, along with the added sharpness in the II.
But as you say, if you already own the I, yeah, you of course would be idiotic to take a loss on the I and dish out extra for the II.

That is why i will wait longer to see in that wide angle prime range [14, 24, 35,...], i have enough time to wait, and as long mkII are out there then i can safely buy mkII or mkIII later in the future if they will produce.

I am finding it so difficult to choose between this lens and the 24mm F1.4 L II
I don't know if it is just the photographers or what -- But the 35 colours and clarity I swear look better than the 24's.
I shoot on a crop body though, so I feel the 35mm would be a bit tight for me.
Anyone here own both the 24 and 35 or have had a go at both? What're your takes? Is it just the photographers in this sample thread vs. the 24mm's or what? Or does the 35 just have beautiful colour rendition and it's own "feel" to it?

I don't know about color and clarity, but the 24L mkI that I tried definitely has that wide feel while the 35L doesn't. Maybe that's what you're seeing in terms of differences between the two?

I have both the 24L MkII and the 35L, although they're relatively new to me. Sharpness, colors and contrast are excellent on both. I can't really see a noticeable difference between the two in those areas. Image quality is really, really nice for both of them.
Pick your favorite focal length between the two, you can't go wrong with either one. The 24L MkII is very impressive.

I have both also only me 24 is the I not the II and if you want a similar FoV as a 35 on FF for a crop then go 24. I really thing the contrast, color and IQ are about the same on both lenses.

Assuming you have 24/1.4L II, 35/1.4L, & ZE 50/1.4 do you find yourself feeling the 35/1.4L as being redundant?

Assume also you have the 16-35/2.8L II and 17-40/4L with the 24/1.4L II and ZE 50/1.4. Would that combination make the 35/1.4L redundant?

11th of August 2009 (Tue), 10:49
I would think the redundancy comes in the form of those 2 zooms. They're so close in FL and why not just dial the 16-35 down to f/4 and you get 16-35 f/4L basically, no?
As for the primes, the 35mm is that perfect middle ground between the 24 & 50 that gives you the ability to shoot wide open at f/1.4. I think after that, it's a matter of which lens(es) you tend to use over time and sell the one that don't.
That's my $0.02 at least. :)

I think he is confusing between focal lengths, for me i will go with few zooms, but i will always go with many primes if i have a chance, doesn't matter if i have 14mm, 24, 35, 50, 85,....800 as long each prime FL can do a job on certain occasions, can't say that 24mm FL is equal 35mm on same body, not even 135 vs. 200 or 300 vs.400 or 500 vs. 600, i also will never feel regret or redundancy if i have 50 1.4 and 50 1.2L and 85 1.8 and 85 1.2L.

yea, i'd say the 17-40L is the only redundant lens in that lineup. i feel like you're trying really hard to get one of us to say "yes" to your question and i simply don't think any current EF lens makes the 35L overkill.

With abit of digital massaging, the 1DMKIII and 35mm 1.4L make for a great combination.
A current project of mine to document normal, everyday day working class people. I've gotten a few shots of these people in action in their working environments but those shots were on film. For their portraits i prefer digital.

Woohoo! Just checked B&H website and it showed as though they had them in stock, gave them a call to confirm, then just completed my order......Very excited, now I just need to figure out if and which filter to go with....Not really a big fan of putting very expensive filters on it, but at the same time would like to create a little protection....I guess I will have to try to find something out there....now I'm officially broke! I think that the hood on the 35L is probably one of the more protective ones out there for a shorter FL lens - with the hood on, I've never worried about the front element. It's deep and narrow enough (doesn't flare out like a 17-40L hood) that it's hard to actually get the lens cap on and off with the hood in place.

Yeah, I know...probably going to go with a Hoya.....it's definately silly to put a cheap filter on an expensive lens....I guess I was just so excited to find one, that I ordered it so quickly and forgot to ad a filter to the order....Guess I'll go order it now.....
WhyFi
12th of August 2009 (Wed), 17:34
Better yet, add a rider to your home owner's/renter's insurance and go naked (well, always wear a hood) - it'll be cheaper than the filter, you won't have to worry about the lens or the effect of the filter in terms of IQ. Besides, filter isn't going to help if you drop it off a cliff... :)
jakeg1999
12th of August 2009 (Wed), 17:42
That's true, I will be using the hood, and I just ordered a Hoya....I'll do a few test shots with it on and off, and if I decide to go without it (naked!!!), then at least I will have it for when I go to the beach and or any other dusty/dirty areas.....I can't wait to get the lens, it's my best one yet....I really have to stop getting lenses, but what I have learned is that you do have to go through a few to find what you like especially the focal lengths....now I have the 35L, 50 1.4, 85 1.8, 135L, and 70-200 F4IS....I plan to leave the 50 on my 50D(backup camera) that I take with me to work in case of a photo opportunity, and then use the 35L, 85 on my 5D as my two main walk arounds....

I don't use filter unless they're for effect or I'm in a sandy, salty type environment and then only if the stuff is blowing. Theres been almost a new thread a week on the subject. My 35L is probably my least expensive lens also. Hood always.

No, I guess I didn't need the flash. I am still learning, and I have a 580 flash that I rarely seem to use, so I play around with it every now and then trying to learn the flash side of photography, but you are right, I should have gone without it and just used the natural light....Thanks for the input, it's nice to get feedback....I have soooo much to learn, and am enjoying the process of doing so!!!!!

I shipped my 35L off to Factory Service last Friday. On Tuesday, I called and they said that it was not yet in their system... then I found a box inside my front door last night!
Canon confirmed and fixed the focusing error and got it back to me within a week, including transit, all for the low, low price of... free. I was expecting to get an email with a repair cost estimate, as the lens was 2-3 months out of warranty, but they evidently took pity on me and did the work on the house - you gotta love it when a company actually does the right thing!
