Hey Ghost still haven't bought the 14L yet. Might soon though. Had to get a new computer (pro Mac) instead.

Thanks, Poppie Guy :) . I hope I'm not disappointing you when I tell you that I'm just using PS. Desaturate, increase contrast, a lot of dodging and burning and the like. Nothing special :) .

A friend has developed an action for PS that gives roughly the same look as what I'm doing, so I'm going to give that a try and see.

Excuse all the cat shots... But all the fur makes for a great demonstration of the sharpness of this AWESOME lens. It's stupid-sharp. For a crop camera, it's THE "standard 50mm" to have. Click for larger/more info:

There are many focal lengths that can be great for certain jobs, but people love certain lenses due to the performance and optical IQ, i can hear that people love this lens for weddings in 5 or 6 different lenses threads.

I just realized I haven't posted here even though I have this lens.

Btw, before this, whenever I posted pictures, the exif would be embedded. However, recently I find that they are not. Which is why I place a link to the exif page on my flickr site. Anyone know why? Even when I just use DPP to convert my raw images to JPG, and upload directly to flickr, there is no exif when I post the pic, but it is there on flickr.

Agree.

Here are just a couple of mine. I've only shot maybe 6 or 7 weddings in the past 10 years and they have all been old clients or good friends. And the last wedding I shot I shot 80% with the 35L and the other 20% split between the 24L and the 85L.

Thanks...Yes you won't regret it. There a virtual tie. The 24L is sharper in center but the 35L is sharper at the edges. Both are OUTSTANDING.

Proof, if proof were needed, that a 35L *can* be the most flexible lens there is - except for bird shooters etc that is :)

What I love about the 35L is that it can do portraits, groups, landscapes and so much more.

But I can sometimes get the shot in a dark room (available) that you can't get with the zoom. ;) two stops is a lot of light.

Yes, so there is 50 1.4, it will be great as well, not that much difference in stops between 1.2 and 1.4 anyway, also there are many pro weddings are shooting without 1.2 or 1.4 lenses and they have amazing shots, not necessary you will have the best shots in dark rooms only :p;) and in all cases you will use high ISO or flash anyway.

I never said there wasn't guys shooting great stuff with the 24-70 but as you can see that you can shoot a wedding and do a very good job with a 35L and an 85L ONLY and you can get shots that you can't get with the zoom because 2 stops is a lot of light.

Too bad i have 24-105 and 24-70 and 16-35, i never using 35mm focal length that much.
I am sure if i will get 35mm i will use it, 24mm i will use it, 14mm i will use it, but i never think i must buy 35mm, and i will never sell even my sigma 12-24 that i don't use it for 35L.
35L is a great lens, but i die to get 85L before, and 600, i think after i buy 2-3 lenses then i will be 35L despite of how great is this lens.

You can call me Pat but thanks man. Much appreciated.

Today I spent my first afternoon with my new 35L. From what I see you foot zoom very close to several paces back.

I'm starting to let my viewfinder guide me rather than mentally/consciously monitoring where my feet are. I'm challenging myself "not" to use my zooms.

I will admit I am not justifying my $$$ spent for this piece of glass. This 35L is a great prime with pleasing bokeh (not dreamy like my 85L) However I was so pleased with the results. Spot on accurate AF and very sharp wideopen (very similar to my Sigma 30mm)

Pat thanks for sharing those photos. It certainly gives me an idea of what this lens can capture with different FOV with foot zooming.

Foot zooming is one of the best skills to master. Even with a zoom. Perspective control is so important for shooting with a specific style.

And whats maybe even more important than foot zooming is learning to see at a given focal length.

Nah.... the 85L is a heavy pig and harder on batteries IMO. 85 f/1.8 is by far a nice lightweight walk around.

Just did that light combo (35L & 85 f/1.8) and its a nice walkaround combo.

The unit that was supposed to ship to you is a bad copy. We have returned it to Canon Malaysia. Next shipment will be early October.

Lol! Not anytime soon. Its by far my most used lens. Just shot a wedding yesterday (09-09-09 was a busy day for all wedding photogs, I bet) and about 70% of my shots were from this lens. It easily produced the sharpest and best pics among all the lenses I used during the shoot.

The 35L is also my most used lens at weddings. Saying it is the perfect wedding lens may cause a flood of disagreeing 24-70L users (again) or zoomusers in general. :)

I attended my friends wedding rehersal dinner. The 35L and 85L was excellent. The 35L was incredibly accurate at all distances. I didn't pull the 24-70L out just to see how this combo worked. More work involved with primes but it worked well. I still like the versatile zooms though.

Thanks pratman. I only wish I have the 85L and another 5D2 - that would be the perfect setup for me. For this wedding, I shot with a 70-200 on my 50D which was my second body. It was versatile but the pictures were just not as great (a bit soft and some noise visible) as the 35L on a 5D2.

Hey guys.. what do you think of using the 35L as a portrait lens. I'm thinking of using this one for a modelling shoot at an event that has low-light (indoors) and not a lot of space. Given my crop cameras, I figured 35L may be good, as using a 50mm lens sometimes it too much "zoom". What do you think?

i own a 17-55mm f/2.8 lens but i am amazed at the sharpness of the images that this lens is able to capture. i was wondering whether it would be redundant to get this while i already have the same focal length covered with my 17-55mm. i dont want to spend another > grand lens for nothing as the 17-55mm wasnt cheap either. i am looking for to buy a lens to shoot mostly landscape and street photography and hopefully do a couple of portraits too.
