i used cannon DPP, to convert from raw to jpeg.. and if i need slight tweaking.. i use Light Room..

but i think the models were already tan, they just came back from spring break if i remember correctly..

so that is the missing piece of the puzzle.. maybe..

Thank You very much for an information.
I use LR a lot and never get such suberb results / sharp/ colour (despite I am convienced that I know 98% functions of LR ).
Mayby my mistake is that I shoud convert a photo FIRST from DPP and next correct colours ....

their skin looks a little too smooth though. I think that's what he's talking about... you'd expect more detail but you hardly don't see any because of how smooth their skin is. i think this is what he's referring to.

I am now with my 35L for a couple weeks. Wondering how often does your focus miss. My first 35L missed like 1 in 10 shots and required a +10 on MA (microfocus adjustment) on my 50D

The second lens I'm on is a +4 on MA and focus missing is alot better but is still there.

I noticed most of the misfocused shots with my first one, my focus point is around 12-15 feet and then focal plane would be like 3 feet behind (1 in 10).

Any thoughts, experiences anyone on missing focus?

Yeah, I agree. The skin looks like it has been brushed over. Great shot though! :)

Does +20 actually fix it, or do you need more then +20? +20 is a bit extreme, though.

+20 is giving me good results, this is the maximum adjustment though and dont know if it could be better.

Mine requires a +5 MA. Without the MA, it was focusing to the front (not back) by about 2 inches when my target is about 4 to 6 feet away. With +5, it's dead on.

The image is sharp and the entire image is the focus. I thought the line coming from the girl on the left and the line of the boy on the right pulls you eye to the mom and baby and forms a classic triangular composition.

Sorry I didn't mean on your composition. Lately I've been having some missed focus shots where my focal plan is no where near my target. Just trying to figure out if anyone else has these issues. I had another copy which was really good. Either I'm getting worse or my new copy is not working out.

hey guys!

So i shot a debut (filipino event that highlights a girl's 18th birthday to signify her transition from girl to woman) last night. So here are some of my favorite shots.

The venue was very very dark. exposure settings were f1.4 / 1/30 / 35mm / ISO 1600

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_8kmPwYzNa_s/SrZbYnO-SDI/AAAAAAAAAGU/xw47-Gf0TOQ/s800/IMG_6238.jpg

On this one, i used cross lighting to light my subjects. This exposure was 1/125 | iso 320 | 35mm | f4.0

hey dajli, great work you've posted. i really like the post processing you've done.. you'll have to give me advice on that later because i have a hard time conjuring up that desaturated film look that you execute so well.

just out of curiosity, how much do you use your 24-70? ever since i landed the 35L, i've found myself keeping the brick in the back more often than not and i'm trying to get a feel from other people who have both and how they juggle usage between the two.

honestly, if the 24-70 takes a backseat as often as it does right now, i might end up selling it and putting that money towards an 85L despite the fact that i've depended on it for so long and it's treated me so well over the years.

In US it was cheaper before Canon or whoever decided to increase the prices, but it is still reasonable than most Europe dealers i am sure.

Poland is not worse than UAE, we have it also very expensive in about $1700-1900, don't tell me that we have oil, only about 20% or less of the total citizen population get benefit of oil and the rest are poorer than Europeans and Americans, so what we can do.

I didn't say you will mention it, but i got many or several replies on many websites that says it doesn't matter how expensive or high prices in UAE because we have oil and we can pay alot more than others, means people thinking we are almost above 90% rich, huh?

I think it'll be fine. 35 on a crop gives the same FOV as a 56mm on FF which is pretty close to the standard 50mm that lots of people enjoy and love.

I had the sigma 30 on a 40D and loved that combo.

I've got the 30 1.4 as well and enjoy it. It's gonna be a battle between these 2 lenses. If the 35L doesn't wow me, I'm gonna trade it for a 24L (Probably Mark I but I'd love a Mark II).

^^^ what shimmishim said. +1 on the FoV on a crop. I had the Sigma 30 before and it pretty much was permanently on my 50D. However, since I've had the 35L and the 5D2, I've never once mounted the 35L on my 50D - other than to take a few test shots when I first bought the lens. Its just soooo much better on the FF. Being able to go pretty wide and very shallow at the same time is just breath taking.

I know that the lens is renown for its sharpness, color, and contrast, so maybe the following picture isn't the best example for this archive.

In addition to all the legendary features, I love the true 35mm focal length on a full frame for non-group portraiture. It really forces one out of his/her comfort zone of nailing the focus on the eyes and bokeh-fying everything else (like with the 85mm f/1.2 and 135mm f/2, which I also love using) and rely on other features to make a portrait stand out.

and if you guys think this is a must buy lens (and i believe you guys should think it is), make sure you guys buy an ND filter. i am about to buy myself a 3 stop ND filter.

in harsh sunlight, i was getting 1/4000 - 1/8000 @ iso 50 @ 1.4. if i have a reflector, i know for sure that id top out.

Great focus on those eyes. Can you share your EXIF on this shot? I'm curious to know what your aperture settings were.

The reason I ask is because I'm having a slight issue trying to get both eyes in focus. The DOF on this lens is definitely a new challenge for me.

Grimlock

to me it looks. like 2.0

but if the eyes are perfectly plained out on the same level as the glass..you can probably get away with 1.6..

good range for you on this would be 2.2-2.5

Haha, thanks a lot! :)

It's a combination of available light and flash merged together.
(One image to light up the subjects, and one image to get the somehow "natural" look of the enviroment)

what ever it is ! you did it perfectly

sweet work.. and great subjects, well executed!

on the second photo..i can see you used 2 different light sources..

one for the girl, and a snooted something for the guy on the ground right?

hollywood stuff !

Thanks again!

On the second photo it is 2 different light sources, yes.

One lamp to the left, way high up, shot through a white reflector (just holding it in front of the lamp) - and one lamp to the right with an umbrella attached.

Great shot, shim! I like the pose. Well, and the DOF too!

I have been looking for this lens for months. It's really hard to find here in Malaysia.

First shot with my new 35L. Not a duck, but cuter than one. ;) This lens is gonna take a little practice but I like it a lot so far.

Fantastic shot Pat. Did you use a bit of fill flash, and if so, gelled to match the ambience? Great mood.

Hello everyone (first post here), inspired by this thread I've been looking for this lens for some time and today found one copy in the used equipment department of a local store. It appears to be in a good shape with one exception. There is some dust inside the lens - one quite large particle (like 1 mm in diameter) and two hair-like particles (looks like tiny shavings of black plastics). Since they are quite large, I have no idea if they could have got there from outside or something is wrong with the lens interior. Any experience with this problem? I guess it would not appear in the photos, but I am affraid of potential future problems, so I don't know whether I should buy the lens.

test the lens outside on a sunny cloudless day... crank the lens to its highest aperture, and set your focus to infinity. crank the photo and see if the dust shows up in the picture. if it does, then buyer beware.

if it doesnt end up showing, make sure that you understand that the resale value of this lens will definitely go down.
