test the lens outside on a sunny cloudless day... crank the lens to its highest aperture, and set your focus to infinity. crank the photo and see if the dust shows up in the picture. if it does, then buyer beware.
if it doesnt end up showing, make sure that you understand that the resale value of this lens will definitely go down.
Well, I tried to shoot plain paper sheet from close (focus to infinity) at f/22 and besides some normal small dust spots nothing else seems to appear in the picture. I wonder how the dirt would influence lens behaviour in contrejour lighting. Good point with the resale value. I think I'll just wait for some other deal to appear.

This producer (Flood) had been set up to have photos taken for an industry magazine cover. When I got there he decided he didn't want his face in shot (a long story) so this is the *only* photo I took with his face. I had no time to muck about, a single shot grabbed while he was not expecting it. Phew :)

I did a backflip (ninja style) and got myself a 28 1.8 today (over getting the 34L). This lens (the 35L) is superior I think, but the price and weight were the factors for me (yeah, I know, I say "if you care about weight, don't get a DSLR" but my primary reasons for a prime in this range was a light lens to bring around every day).
So I won't be posting here any samples afterall... ;)

They're quite different animals, I use them for different purposes. 16mm is more than twice as wide as 35mm, but the 35L is clearly better (and faster) at 35mm. Again, quite different lenses.

Agreed. I didn't use the 35 for the first time until I shot my first wedding. Now the 35 pretty much stays on the 5DII all the time. The 85 gets some lovin' but definitely not as much.
Nice series by the way!

Ok I've been lurking. Like the minimum focus compared to the 85 1.2 (I love by the way) but not using alot. Interested if you 85 1.2 owners love the 35 more because of that. I'm thinking this may be my next toy.

i HATE the MFD of the 85L its just enough for upper body portraits. the 35mm f1.4 MFD is perfect for most of my work.

Agreed. I haven't used the 50 f/1.2 and I'm not going to because I know I'll want one badly if I do. :)
The 35L is a great great lens. Super sharp wide open... like the 85L and the 135L. This is the reason why these three are the holy trinity of primes.

Choose the focal length that's the most important for you. Both are great lenses.
I have both and the 50L has better bookeh, color and contrast but I like the 35mm focal length more, so I use the 35L more.

Man, tough crowd. :p
I've been holding off on the 24L for a long time, wanting to see how the 35L does for me. Turns out I do want a wider prime (the 14L is a bit too much most of the time, heh). Good thing, too - Canon went and Mark II'ed the sucker.

It's weird, I fell in love with the focal length with the Zeiss 2,8/25mm ZM. Found I liked it with both digital (1.33x on the M8 ) and film (1.0x). I only wish I could use that lens on the Canon bodies. It's ridiculously good by ALL measures - and only ~$1k new.

Alright! I get it! I understand now!
It makes sense to me now why so many people crave this lens.
I used to think that I could just use the 16-35 Mk II at the 35mm FL once I get it, but I do not believe now that to be a viable option. I think I will have to purchase both.
If you want to keep your 14 hunit in your pocket, don't look in this thread.
