Nice!
How did you give his face the right WB while the keeping the color for the surroundings?
Even though I wasn't there it looks like he used a flash and had the WB set to either flash or daylight. He is mostly lit by the flash and is therefore in proper WB. The background is lit by those weird space-alien green light things which is obviously a much different color temperature than flash making the background greenish.

Flash? Err, no. Horrible things they are :)
I simply adjusted the WB manually in Lightroom for the subject and then just had a bit of fun pushing things in LightRoom. I love what you can do in LightRoom!

Wow. Thanks so much guys. Can you let me know exactly what you like about this shot? I am learning and would like to be able to emulate it again if possible. It's so hard for me to know what works and what doesn't. So if something does, I'd like to learn from that. I appreciate your comments.
I liked the composition. The way that you had the camera low to get a nice perspective with nice foreground colour and the little lad heading towards that lush light. I don't really know why I liked it so much, maybe it's because you're following the rule of thirds or maybe having a little one the same age I kind of related to it. :)

That "softness" is background blur I am assuming? It's known as bokeh. Gotta watch what ya say about that beloved 35L here because its no softy :)
Just givin you a hard time. ;) Welcome to POTN.

Haha, I like the 35L myself!! Don't worry, I didn't want to knock it ;)
I think I didn't clearly say what I meant... I guess saying it softly captures light is what I meant... Although a big part of that must be the photographer.
The last picture echo posted illustrates what I'm talking about.
I do agree that it's got an awesome bokeh and that the lines are in fact tack sharp!!
Thanks :)

Aww, she's a cutey. I'm sure that lens is residing under a heap of boxes and wrapping paper just waiting for me to tear into the box. It's killing me. I NEED IT. I WANT IT. NOW. Can't believe I've got to wait until next week.
And another box from b&h came to my house yesterday. It was heavy, which from experience and its size tells me it is gift cards for my bday in January. Yippee. Can't wait.

thanks guys
I wasn't sure about the 35 1.4 that night (the lens gives some distortion in particular when the alignment with the horizon is OFF -and Times Square goes vertical..easily LOL)
But it was very popular within the press photographers, probably the most used along with the obvious 70-200. It was a surprise actually: so many 35 1.4 in the same place eheh
In any case the lens has some "magic" power: but probably the most difficult lens for me to use: it becomes a different lens depending on the aperture and distance, even changing the ISO makes the lens behaving differently. It takes a lot of practice. I'll be shooting much more 35 1.4 this year but I'll have to study the lens more.

I agree with the others, great shots!!
I also agree the 35L is a tough lens to use effectively. I need some more practice myself...:(

I've said it before and I'll say it again. . . I have GOT to get this lens!! I want to experience the 'magic' of it and master its challenges.
But, I am beginning to have some minor (very minor) second thoughts on getting this lens for a crop sensor camera. Have actually started a little flip-flopping between this one and the 24L. But keep coming back to the 35L.

yup join the club. I have an even harder decision to make, 35L, 24L or go zoom first and get the 24-70 and make a decision on a prime at the end of the year.

My advice is go 35 if you have FF and 24 if you have a crop...
Or get both ;)

Sorry!! Sorry forgot to mention some of those were taken with a 12 ext. tube for macro work
you have to get extremely close but since flowers dont move it was easy
=)
also as a side note i think that maybe a 24l would be a little more usefull
the 35 seems a little too long in lenght for the 1.6
the minimum focusing distance seems a little far aswell
but still a great great lens!!!

Yeah that was my point the 35 is great on a 5D and is the lens I couldn't live without so the 24 on a 1.6 would be about the same FoV.
