...Oh, and if you want to keep even more money in your pockets, don't look at the 24mm f/1.4 L prime thread either.

I've concluded that I still like the 35L more then my new 24L so far. 35mm is my fl. The 24 is rad, though.

i'd have to agree.. the 35L makes for a nicer FL than the 24L. i find the 24L to be too wide for me.

The 35L is a great on a full frame. Stepping forward can get in real close and stepping back gets more fov.
I'm looking into getting a 24L for my crop body. I feel the 35L on a crop body to be a tad on the long side when indoors.

I feel like the 35 made me a better photographer because it was semi-wide I had to consistently think about my composition. I think my new 24L will further my compositional skill by really forcing me to make images, rather then capture them.
Shooting wide and doing it well is one of the hardest and most valuable skill sets to have in photography.

I totally agree.
However after shooting my friends reception I found the 35L to be extremely limiting. Theres a time and place for primes and zooms for me.
It was in a chinese restaurant (15 table party) and I ended up using my 24-70L instead of my bag of primes. The "wedding games" to speeches I found the zoom to help my composition while retaining the perspective I wanted. Space was very limited so foot zooming would have interfered with the bride and groom/guest when they did there silly games.
I still had my 70-200 on my 50D for the stealth shots. My 85L was neglected that night.
Oddly enough I used the 35L and 85L combo before but it seemed to be more suitable in a different reception.
I "capture" but I probably have more photo journalistic style. I also pay attention to details so I like zooming or foot zooming with a prime on a second body.
35L is a great lens but its simply a tool in my bag.

I agree. With an 85L you can shoot just about anything, anywhere. Outside a studio, the wider you go, the more difficult composition becomes, unless you're shooting landscapes.

I had a 50 1.4 and found that it was too similar of FL to my 35 and 85, so i never used it. Always ended up reaching for the 35 or 85 instead. Sold it for the 135L
Now, the 135 is an AWESOME lens and the 35/85/135 combo is very nice. Id say keep the 85 and just pick up the 135

I have that combo too and I really like it. 35 and 50mm are close but it gives you a different perspective (and the 50 has nicer color/contrast/bokeh).
I find the 135L perfect for candids at weddings. You can stand back more, people are less aware of the camera. I like that.
The AF is lightning fast even in low light.

There is no way to decipher the quality of the lens from that shot, sorry.
You need to pick a less cluttered, more defined target to shoot at. That shot has way to much going on in it to be able to tell anything, and shooting from a car is not the best way to test a lens.

Have tested it with closer subjects, just curious to see how it performs wide open from afar.
Other than that, there's nothing else I wouldn't be able to judge myself.

Don't have another to compare to, and if it happens that someone here has tried the same, it'd be more convenient than to borrow someone else's copy and do a test.
It's not really that important to me to do a formal test if you will.

Through a closed car window? If so, I would totally send it back - mine performs much better under those conditions. Well, at least my third one did - I had to send the first two back; they weren't tack sharp wide open, focused at infinity, through windows and at just about maxed shutter speeds.

Thanks man.
As far as my PP goes, I only use LR2 so its pretty basic. I just go down the tool bar starting with the basic (exposure, contrast, saturation, etc) then go into curve adjustments, split toning then sharpening and vignettes. I've created a few preset so i usually start with those and adjust accordingly

I was actually REALLY happy with my 24-70. i'll definitely pick one up again in the future. I've always preferred primes.. sticking with the 35 1.4, 85 1.8, and possibly a 135L later to complete my trinity.
yea, it's hard to say really. i enjoy using primes more, but for paid event work, the 24-70L and the 70-200L are just too convenient to write off. they make my life a lot easier, and my clients are happy with the results. i've been considering a switch to a 24-35-85-135 set, but i'm having a hard time selling off tools that work very well for me as is.

I have yet to shoot an entire event with just primes i wonder how opinion will change after that happens.

This is such an incredible capture... Well done! I'm going to Kuala Lumpur myself in February, do you recommend going to these caves?
Thanks! Well, to give you an idea of what you'll see there, there are temples and statues of hindu gods and naturally, you'll find devotees there. And if you're here in the first half of february, then the timing is about right as that is when the hindus celebrate thaipusam, which is an annual festival that takes place at these caves. The devotees, and there will be throngs of them, will have have their bodies pierced with hooks and other sharp elements and they walk up the 272 steps as a sign of worship. It is a spectacular event and you'll have plenty of opportunities to capture nat geo type photos. Here's a quick summary about thaipusam : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thaipusam.
If you're into that kind of thing, then yes, I do think its a place to visit. I find that I could spend a few hours there just for photographs but I'm usually there with clients and we have a fixed schedule to follow so I don't get to spend too much time there. Here's two more pics of the place that gives you an idea of what's there. During the thaipusam festival, this place would be jammed packed with people. If you want to see more, feel free to see my flickr stream and do a search on "batu caves". Or you could just google it and there'll probably be thousands of pics.

I admit, I had to look that one up, but it was what I thought it was.
Anyway, not necessarily freaked by clowns ... but I will say that one is just plain creepy. I think it's the mouth. Just look at it.
It reminds me of this clown bank I had when I was a kid. You placed a coin in his hand and hit the lever. He would eat the coin. There's nothing like a creepy clown eating your money when your 7 years old. I hated that damn thing. I swear it.
Here's a couple links to the scary clown bank I speak of. (not mine, but same bank)

At least that explains the name Pennywise (http://images.google.com/images?q=pennywise+the+clown).
But in essence, clowns are just great fun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evil_clown)!

There's something funky about that first shot, Pat. I don't know if it's the focus, lighting or composition. I do wonder about the hand on the beam... was that left from a PP edit, or is it just the lighting, that makes it looks like a hand?
I like like the lighting of the second one and the expression is nice - but her right hand bugs me. The photo has a soft feminine feel to it, but then she has a harsh fist like she's going to punch you.

Thanks Pham, the shot was with on-camera flash (580 EXII) shot at ƒ5.6 for 2.5 sec exposure - ISO 100. Used, ETTL, with -1.3 EV.
jet, what you're looking at was the end of the train as it went by to the left. It was moving very quickly, and I rushed to get the shot (I had to get everything off the tracks). I was about 4 feet from the train, shot with on-camera flash - 2.5 second exposure. The Flash caught the lettering, then the extra time allowed the rest to blur. Kind of a cool effect.
Thanks for looking guys!
