I am planning on using this lens with a 2x TC. Does anyone have samples of this combo? Kidding of course. I love this lens. If only it could reach across a soccer field I would dump all of my other lenses.

Out of curiosity, does anyone here have another prime that they feel really compliments the 35L and give that same WOW appeal? I don't have any hands on experience with the 14L, 24L, 50L, 85L, or 135L (only 200L). I am leaning to the 85LII but I have a hard time with the decision because the 85 1.8 is fast and sharp. The 135L seems to get lots of praise.

Most people would say 85 II. :) It really depends on what you need in terms of FL, though. Don't just rush out for another L-prime because you want to be 'wowed'. The 135L is a spectacular performer, but often guilty of being bought simply for its reputation - the user later discovering that they don't actually have a need for that FL.

Got it this week and I think I am in love. My Holt Trinity is the 35L, 50L, and 85L. I did have to micro adjust it and I think it is perfect. Here is a picture from this afternoon.

First Cropped and a little sharpening, second is with more processing.

This lens is amazing, as are the others.

I just got this lens back. Owned a few days but went for the 85L. A few months later and now I'm fortunate enough to own both and WOW. I'll have to post some examples of how much micro adjusting made this lens absolutely superb. Will post in a few...

Ok so I only had time for 2 shots so I'll have to go an nail down the proper adjustment (with a tripod!!!). But to give an example of how crazy one adjustment benefits the lens, take a look below. First image is out of the box. Second is micro adjusted to +15. All shot with the camera sitting on the table propped up with a box. I know, I know... lol

Keep in mind this was in pretty crap lighting. Just a really quick test on my lunch break. I'm thinking after really testing this out I'll be in the +13-16 range:

As recommended by some folks here on POTN, I rented a 35 1.4 to take to Ireland instead of my 85L because they thought it would be a more useful focal length for Pub shots... I didn't use it as much as I wanted, but I think it was the right choice - it's a really nice lens. Here's one to start -

@phamster yea shot at 1.4

I was in my backyard looking through the fence onto the neighbors backyard and the green bokeh is their grass. Thought it was kinda interesting. I tried it the other way, where the greens were in focus but that one didn't come out so well

When I get a new lens I explore my backyard until the weekend comes and I can take it out for a spin haha.

Yep, this lens will show purple fringing on high contrast edges at wide apertures. It doesn't bug me much, and when it does I selectively desaturate the purple hues, since PS doesn't have a particularly easy way to fix them.

mxracer : Stunning.

Guys, seemingly in a dilemma over a low light Prime. I'm torn between the more expensive 35L vs the much much much cheaper sigma 30mm f1.4 lens.

I've been thru and forth the thread here and the sigma and all over google and getting, in some ways, conflicting information.

I want to shoot wide Open to get all available light in and for bokeh. Which is sharper (or is it copy dependent?")

I'm on a 7D body.

I think they are both great lenses....Sigmas AF isn't quite as good as the Canon's but is pretty good none the less and the build of the 35L is better than the EX 30.....I think once you have them dialed in on your 7D it might be a wash as to which is sharper....I'd grab a used EX 30 and see if you like it, if you're not happy with it, sell it for what you bought it for and grab the 35L....Easy Cheesey

Pham,

Not all cars in Australia have signals on the right side of the wheel.

The Japanese manufacturers and Australian manufacturers have signals on the right side, with wiper controls on the left.

The European manufacturers like VW, BMW and Merc, etc. have the lights on the left and wiper controls on the right.

Both come with the speedometer in KMs only.

Love the R32. Wish I had got that over the GTI.

Those cars that don't have the turn signals on the right side of the steering wheel are not conforming to Homoliagation rules ! and should be fine a hefty bill ! ha ha..

since i work for a japanese company, i have to make sure our units that go to Australia have the turn signals on the right side of the wheel.. i really don't know how the other makers can get away with that> ?

also your road crown is much more aggressive so our alignment has to offset for that aggressive road crown..

i can go on and on.. it is cool my plant makes units and they get shipped all over the world

I know the question wasn't directed to me, but, the 135L can actually be a nice break from the 85L sometimes....The speed it provides is welcome and you don't loose IQ....but you do lose 85mm, which is a very nice fit (for me anyways) with my FF.

thanks!

i RARELY use my 85L. its a very very very specialized lens. Due to its slow AF and heavy weight, it never finds room in my walk around bag. My walk around bag consists of a 13" macbook, charger, 100 pages of notes, pens and highlighters, a 5dmkii, an extra battery, a 35L, a 135L, and a 430ex. In the past the 85L was in the bag, but i realized that i needed the length if i wanted to do street photos. So then, i bought the 135L. I snobbed the lens in the beginning because of it's f2 aperture (which is what a lot of people are doing), but after thorough testing of the 135L, i realized that the lens produces CREAMIER bokeh than the 85L - crazy right? i know! haha. The 135L is a great bargain as it's cheaper, and lighter than the 85L. It has that reach i am looking for. Adding a 1.4x converter makes it close to the 200 f2.8 with minimal IQ loss.

Now, would i ever sell my 85L? NEVER. Just looking through the lens unmounted make me drool. I'd rather use it as a paperweight than sell it and use the money to buy burgers and fries from mcdonalds. In addition, it sits in my storm case, and only comes out when i need it in the spring and summer time. It also jumps out when i need it for extreme lowlight situations like in my house. In situations, when the 135L demands settings of f2, 1/160, iso 2000, I'll bring out the 85L so i can attain lower iso levels @ f1.4-f1.6. Even though the 5d can handle high isos, the maximum i want to shoot is 1600.

If you have the entire holy trinity line, i am pretty sure you'll never go back to zooms (because of its 2.8 aperture, size and weight - though their only advantage is versatility. please dont tell the zoom lovers, they'll kill me like when i said that their "amazing" 70-200mm f2.8L IS was CRAP). You'll also never chase after the other L lenses as you'll feel that the 35L is wide enough, and the 135L is long enough unless you have a ton of money and want to get the 14L, 24L, (skip the 50L), and get the 200 f2L IS. Before i get that crazy, i really gotta invest in portable studio strobes. Thats what i really want to venture into before wedding season - my pocket strobes (285HVs) aren't cutting it anymore.

After trying this amazing holy trinity line, i start to wonder HOW MUCH BETTER are those leicas. the 50mm f0.95 is very tempting though that lens costs about the same as a 200 f2L IS and a 300mm f2.8L IS. I'm sure that i'll be getting one when i reach the age of 30 - which is in 9 years, when my back hurts and cant carry a heavy DSLR around.

Thanks for that! I don't think I could ever sell my 85L either. The only reason I thought about it was because my brother offered to buy it from me. I do want the 135L. Maybe sometime next year. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts regarding both, and yes I am filipino :)

I now have all 3 (35L, 85L & 135L) and dont feel the need for anymore at present (one day, the 200L). :)
