Thanks for that! I don't think I could ever sell my 85L either. The only reason I thought about it was because my brother offered to buy it from me. I do want the 135L. Maybe sometime next year. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts regarding both, and yes I am filipino :)

i am PROUD TO BE PINOY! HAHAHA though i am half chinese too hahahah!

I now have all 3 (35L, 85L & 135L) and dont feel the need for anymore at present (one day, the 200L). :)

You make 30 sound SOOOO old!!!

hahahahaha! the only goals i have for thirty are the fact that i have a family, a house, and some more L lenses. preferably a 200mm f2.0L IS.

A few more from Thanksgiving, easily becoming my favorite lens. I kept putting on my 85L only to want the 35L back on. I guess being the new toy, it's getting favored a bit right now:

let me help you..

35L on a full frame is perfect for family and events.. it doesn't distort the corners, that was one of the reasons i picked it over the 24L.. for my clients in the mid west who really are conservative.. the distorted corners would bug them..

and a family photo shot..

If you think that the 24 is too wide, then you might find the 35 or the 50 to be better. I like the 35 a lot.the 24 is defiitely too wide for me

Thanks! yeah the 35L is a very sharp lens. i always pick it over my 24-70. thinking of getting rid of that thing. i bought it for 1025. when the rebates are over, i'll probably sell it since it doesnt get used.

Well anyways, here's some more guys! i hope you like it! (i'm not sure if the dog picture is a repost. I'm active in a couple of different local forums. LOL - but i am really loyal to POTN)

Welcome to the prime lens addiction! you'll soon find yourself blindly chasing the other two primes. and sooner or later, you'll be 3000 dollars in debt again. if you really think about it, 3000 dollars is not a whole lot of money.

$3000 dollars is really not a whole lot of money. Think of it this way, if you put away 250 dollars a month for a whole year, you can definitely have your 135L + 85L.

In terms of camera gear and personal expenses, i am personally trying to put away 500 a month starting next year, so that i can buy a 200 f2L IS by 2010. it'll take about a year unless i compromise and get lighting gear.

based on what you said, i'm going to assume one of two things:

1) you live with your parents. vancouver is not a cheap place to live. rent, utilities, health/property insurance, etc make $250-500 a month a pretty big deal for most of us in our early twenties. your comment only makes sense if you don't have massive bills to pay every month.

2) you landed yourself a really nice cushy job. one of the lucky few who makes a nice living in which rent, utilities, insurance, savings, etc are all well within your means and putting money off for photography equipment is not difficult.

--

not trying to generalize, but i think it's a bit rash to say $3000 is not a lot of money. i think you have to understand that your standard of living must be pretty high for a twenty-something if you can pay all of your bills and have $500 left over every month.

Yamaha451
30th of November 2009 (Mon), 18:13
Yes 3000 is a lot of cash, but if you can make the lenses last for 10+ years, it really is not a bad price. Most things like computers/tv's/electronics ect have a product life cycle of much shorter. So hopefully you can find a lens lineup that lasts the test of time.

Hopefully I have found my perfect lineup with the addition of the 35L, and I can stop obsessing over lenses and get out and shoot!

ChrisGorabPhotography
30th of November 2009 (Mon), 18:14
Try living in the North Jersey / NYC metro area. If you want to own a home and afford your property taxes, you need to be making 6 figures in order to save anything on top of that.

That said, $3000 is not a LOT of money, but it is a lot to spend on photography equipment when there are other large expenses to cover... especially if photography is only your hobby and not your business.

i feel yah and i was actually agreeing with you on the $3000 not being a lot of money.... just found the post to be funny in the context it was posted! I guess my post got mis-interpreted.

its not too tough to save up that much.... especially when you keep these lenses for a LONG time its feasible to fork out that kind of dough on them.

Any particular reason why you didn't use any NR on this one? The chroma noise and banding are pretty dominant. Did you increase the exposure in PP?

I took this shot at iso 25600 on the 5dii to get fighting chance to get the lines. I didn't do any nr because eventhough the chroma noise and banding is there, to me, it produces a nice effect to represent night time. The banding also helps flow the lines together. I assume you don't like it. Lol. To each his own style right? Ahhahahahha.

The 35L is THE perfect walkaround fror the 1.6 croppers (I'm using it on my 40D right now)...Nice choice and some nice first shots (#2 is my favorite of the 3), guess I never noticed the octo-bokeh with the 35L before, I would think it'd be round....Enjoy

I shoot with a crop body and all of my submissions are crop (XTi). The 35L is amazing either way. I found on a crop, the 35L is a perfect walk around lens. Close to a 50mm on a FF. It's really a great focal length and very flexible. It's sharp as a mofo, and the bokeh is amazing. (bokeh not to be judged on the image below)

I'm still catching up on edits, but here's a repost with my 35L.
