hey guys! yesterday, i posted a thread on the lens forum asking people which lens to bring. It was between the 35L and the 24-70. I was afraid that i wasn't going to get wide enough, so i even considered the 24-70. People convinced me to use the 35L and so i did. At times it wasnt wide enough, and at times it wasnt close enough.

here are more samples of the 35L taken in a club of my friends. we decided to take couple photos in the club because they were both kind of dressed up. i hope you guys enjoy them. I know that they are noisy - so dont complain! the club was a cave! hahahah

using a flash would have really been the better option imo..

and I didn't know tha 5Dmk2 was so bad at ISO6400?? did you underexpose and then upped the exporure some more in post?

I could almost swear my 5Dc does a better job, which sounds a bit weird to say..

awfull banding in the black there :S (was planning to upgrade my 5Dc to 5Dmk2)

I'm gonna have to check to see if i underexposed and upped it in PP. i'll update a little later. i think i upped by 1/3rd.

If i could, i would have taken OCF lighting with me into the club, but thats not viable in the situation. HAHAHA

I know I don't need it, I kinda like the noise :) mine are all strait out of Lightroom with standard noise reduction.

thanks wildcart. do you think its possible to print a 24x36 print of those photos? this is what they want... i just wonder how bad it'll look. i'm kinda risking 100 dollars to see what this would look like on a canvas.

but yet i dont regret the fact that i didnt use flash, if i did, i would have lost the natural feel of the venue.

and thanks for the pm about the bowens lighting. its so tough picking a lighting system!

Yeah, you're definitely the most talentless noob with the Holy Trinity around here.. just kidding!

FYI, I started off with a 350D and stayed with Rebels for almost two years. I think it was obvious to everyone you wanted the Trinity for the prestige factor, but you probably should have started slower, practiced more and figured out what you really needed before you emptied your massive wallet on a few top-of-the-line fixed focal length lenses. :p Just sayin'! ;)

hahahha! the funny thing is, i did start slow and upgraded for the right reasons... (youll be the judge)

Bodies:

i started with the 400d. sold it due to: poor AF, cramped quarters (LOL), lack of dial and multicontroller dial, 1-stop increments of ISO, lack of 2 second timer, and imbalanced weight ratios between lens and body. I had it for 2 weeks, and realized that if i needed something more...

i moved to the 40D. I had this camera for 2 years. loved everything about it! i only sold it because of 1 reason. That cute girl up there gave me a 5DM2.

Now lenses:

in the past...

Started with the 17-85 - didnt like the distortion at 17mm, and poor overall sharpness of the lens when stopped to f4 or even 5.6 when taking group shots. Sold it because i needed something faster as i take portraits indoors and the lights we have here at home are really dark.

Moved to the 50mm f1.8 II - Loved this lens up until the point that i started taking night shots... I kept it for 5 months. everything about this lens was fantastic, but it had to go because of its 5 blade aperture.

Moved to the 17-50mm f2.8 non-vc - lens didnt do me any good because like i said, my house is really dark and all did thing was hunt. wait.. sorry, lemme rephrase that. it LOUDY hunted at night - whining away as it tried to lock AF. had it from april 2008 up until december 2008.

Bought the 11-16 f2.8 - loved this lens!!!!! It was sold because i no longer had my 40D. if i get a crop body again, i will get this lens again. nothing wrong with this lens! i was very very very very happy with it. Had it from july 2008 - September 2009

Moved to the 17-55mm f2.8 IS - I had a love/hate relationship with this lens. Loved it because it was sharp, lightweight, af locked in low light, and has IS. hated it because it sucked dust. I dont believe that there is an equivalent lens for the EF mount. this lens was everything for a normal zoom. Sold it because i moved to the FF bodies. Had it from december 2008 - september 2009

Moved to the 70-200mm f2.8 L IS - The reason why i sold it is because when i shot events, my settings were... iso 1600, 1/80, f2.8 at any FL. i needed something faster and decided to compromise by thinking about getting the 135L. At least it'll get me sharp results at iso 1600, 1/160, at f2.0 at 135mm. had it from december - october 2009.

Bought the 50mm f1.4 - sold it because i wasnt sharp at f1.4 until f2.0. that was the only reason. tried again and got the same results. Had this lens for 5 weeks from feb to march. shot with it everyday, i couldnt cope with the lack of sharpness. i gave it a chance.

Bought the 85mm f1.8 - bought this lens 3-4 times. sold it all because i always shot at f2.0 to reduce CA. I realized that i wanted to shoot lower than f2.0 - maybe f1.4-1.8, so i sold it. Had the lens for intervals of 1-3 months all throughout 2009.

Bought the 100mm macro - great lens - just not for me. i am not a macro guy.

Present time...

bought the 35L - was deciding between the 24-70 and the 35L at that time. After hearing and witnessing so many problems about the 24-70 (focusing issues), i realized that there might be a higher chance of the 24-70 being upgraded than say the 35L. Since the 24-70 lacked IS and was heavy, i realized that it'll be easier to shoot handheld with the 35L as it has a 2-stop advantage, and is a lot lighter. Why didnt i buy the 35 f2.0? because of its 5 blade aperture and i wanted sharp results from f1.6-f.8.

Bought the 85L - imo, the 85mm f1.8 didnt give me enough of the "3D effect" i was searching for! i needed something more! since i shot the 85mm f1.8 at f2.0 at all times, i realized i wanted to shoot at f1.2-f1.8.

bought the 135L - i bought this lens because i only had the 35L and the 85L. I wanted and needed reach. the 135L gave me that. It's AF speed and light weight design is perfect for street photography. when paired with the 35L, these two lenses make for a great time when walking around downtown!

bought the 24-70L - another gift from the cute girl above. she felt that i needed a zoom lens, so we bought one. after falling in love with primes, i am not a huge fan of f2.8 anymore. We might sell this lens off in 2010 as it barely jumps out of the storm im2500 case.

are these all valid reasons for upgrading? i believe so. I didnt just do it for the prestige of these lenses, i needed it because they are sharp lenses that have a really wide apertures which is what i was looking for.

edited: Bolded important facts. too long and too boring to read. HAHAHA

In fact i am really confused to make my wife to love photography then i hope she will not ask me to buy her a Hassy or Phase One rather than mine, oh my, in this case i will kill her.
At least my wife was hating the computer and the internet a lot, but when she was using my Mac laptop in the past and then i bought her HP laptop and use internet wireless from me, now she can't leave the computer, but i think i will keep her away from Photography but will think of a way that she at least don't feel bad or mad on me about it.

Actually, it was a shoot for a studio magazine and it is a contender for the cover. I didn't have enough time to play with the lighting so it's a little flat for my taste but a bit of PS may fix that :)

it's pretty much sharp throughout the whole range. i might stop it down to f/2 to get rid of the CA, but aside from that, the 35L is good throughout it's whole aperture range. i suppose if you're nitpicking, anything between f/5.6 to f/8 or so should be your best bet.

Even f/1.4 is razor sharp. Two pictures from a few weeks ago:

The roof of the Duomo in Firenze is more than 80m (240ft) of the ground level. This shot was taken kneeling on the floor. Hand held, ISO 400, f/1.4, 1/125s.

Cropped slightly:

It seems that the Bokeh with this lens or other lenses [such as 85 1.2, 50 1.2, 135 2] are making this lens to shine, so if i go with f8 up to f22 then it will not be a big difference than 35 2.8 or sigma 30 1.4?!!!

That, along with a sharp 1.4 in low light situations which do not allow the use of flash.

Yeah, I just switched from PC to Mac and my old PP program doesn't support Mac, so I've been learning LR.....I really love the presets, makes it so easy......I get lost in CS4, my brain never wrapped around it (getting too old maybe)...I think LR is a perfect tweener....(for me)...

Why would they say 35L is the perfect pair with 135L ?

Who is they?

I think that perfect pair would belong to the 35L/85L, but I can see why some would say it.
