Wondering whether to buy 35 L and stay with 70-200 f4 or stay with my 28 1.8 and buy 70-200 2.8 ;).

Was doubting about the F2 and F1.4, but got the F1.4. Now a year and a half later I have both :D
I love both, but the F1.4 is magical.

Can you comment on the AF of the f/2 version in low light?

Can you comment on the AF of the f/2 version in low light?
i own a 35mm f2, the AF in really low light is tricky, with the center point selected is pretty accurate, the AF hunting is present mostly with the peripheral focus points

Nice API desk! Care to share your lighting setup? Have been eye-balling this lens and the 24mm for a while now.
Love your work, btw! You have a lot of really good studio pictures on your site!
Kind regards,
Morgan Nicolaysen
Hi Morgan,
I used 3 strobes. 1 x Metz 58 with brolly to the right at 1/4 power, 1 x Metz 58 to the left at 1/8 power and a Sigma at 1/16 power with red gel on behind the board. I used straw colour gels on both Metz' to try and balance with the studio lights.
Cheers!
:)

This abandoned factory has like 4 floors, of which each floor must have 8-10 of these doors... so I definitely think I'm going to go back and explore the other floors (I ran out of time before it got dark tonight, and this place is in a very bad section of town)

Can I ask why? Lately I've been feeling weird about my 35L. Close distances it performs magically but when subjects are farther, it seems to miss focus. Makes me kind of sad.

What seems to be the problem? You can actually call them to get an estimate depending upon what the issue is. The difficult part would be if they find other problems and increase the price to have it fixed. However, they usually will contact you (email/phone) to move forward with repair. But let's get back to square one...
What's the problem you're having with the 35L?

^^
Well, I´ve had it for over a year (so its already out of guarantee, I should have thought of this before). And it worked fine but I never thought it was great. Im not pixel peeper (at least I did not use to be) and I think that´s why I let it pass. But I always felt this nagging feeling in the back of my mind. Until last week, when I was shooting at a party with this and a Sigma 10 – 22mm 3.5-5.6. I compared the pics and the sigma looked sharper (alarm bells). I then did some tests using this one and my 24 -105. And the zoom came out on top at all apertures at 24mm.
It´s not a back or front focusing issue. The problem is it just looks soft. At 1.4 it´s bad, at 1.6, it improves a lot but still not great.
It might be possible to live with it but I want the supreme level of awesomeness I know this lens is capable of.
Now, I want to test it a bit more, trying manual focus and better natural light. The problem might have something to do with the bad lighting in the rooms where I tested it. Or maybe it needs to go on a FF sensor (I don’t own one). But it shouldn´t be that. Or maybe it´s just me.
Would you guys like to see samples and tell me what you think? That would be very helpful.
If yes, what type of settings would you like to see on the samples?

Hi anybody from the UK purchased the 35mm recently?
I have had one on order with Jessops since 20 Feb and now been told that there won't be any in the country until mid April at the earliest more likely early May?!
I have checked other suppliers and they all seem to be saying the same thing, is this lens really that difficult to get hold of?
I am thinking of cancelling the order and picking up the 24-70mm f2.8 but seeing some of the samples on this thread and being spoilt by my 135mm f2 I think patients might be the key!

Possible to live with, yes. But you shouldn't because you're paying a premium for this glass to work across the board.
Mine, as well as many others on the board, can attest to the lens being quite superb at f/1.4

yeah I looked at the 24L but was worried it might be a bit wide, i like the idea of the 35L because it feels more "normal" and as I sold the 24-105L to help fund the potential new purchase the 35L seemed to make more sense.

MigsVuitton,
So what sould I do? Thats not what premium means, I believe. Unfortunately, the fact the lens is disgunstingly expensive doesnt signify I wouldnt have to pay for calibration. I think I shouldnt, I feel mistreated by Canon (although I myself should have been smarter), but 200$ would be too much. So what sould I do?
Anyway, Ill start work on those samples.

Hey Migs,
This is Jack Bentley, a portrait/wedding photog from Alabama --www.infinity-photographers.com. I've been admiring your work on these threads for some time.
I bought the cheap lensalign and it worked very well. Before, I couldn't seem to
get anything really sharp. I adjusted my 35 L to +15, my 85 L II to +12, and my 135 L
to +5, and it's made a huge difference. Before buying the lensalign, I sent my 7D
and 85 L to Canon for adjusting focus. They said no adjustment was necessary,
but they adjusted it to +2. NO improvement , so I bought the lensalign and made
the adjustments quickly and accurately.
I can certainly sympathize with anyone who buys a prime, uses wide open
for the bokeh, and finds the subject lacking in critical sharpness. But, I think
that you must use the micro af.
Again, I really enjoy your postings.

Sunking,
Just my opinion, but I think that a body that enables mf adjustment is mandatory
to achieve critical focus with the fast primes. The razor sharp focus of the lenses
and the high powered resolution of the cameras requires the microfocus adjustment.

But will micro focus adjustment work? I dont think its a matter of achieving focus, it does it very well. The problem is that it focuses on what it should, but the result is soft.
I used Manual focus using live view and 10x zoom, still soft.

When the focus spot on the lens is very sharp wide open...its just too bad that its not very consistent at all...
Gonna send it to Canon for calibration soon ... if I've spent this much for a lens I wanted to be working perfectly wide open otherwise I could've get the 35mm F2 for about 1/5th of the price....

How does it's focus performance at 1.4 compare with your 85L's forcus performance at 1.2 or 1.4? That would be a better guage, I would think. The depth of field gets so shallow below 1.8 that I still have to concentrate on nailing a good contrast point to nail the focus that wide, on both my 35L and 50 at 1.4.

I dont know what I did there. I did remove the protection filter (German B W worth 100$). Could that be the reason my images with this lens aren't always sharp? I'm not sure, because the other lens have the same filter too and they dont suffer from that. And also, this was the only good photo in this last test, the other 10 or so were also extremely soft. Even more than others. The other thing is that I used 100 ISO.
BTW: Great photo Migs! I also dont like the umbrella but if you hadnt toldme, im not sure i would have noticed (maybe yes). But besides that, its great.

Its probably a combination of both the filter and ISO. I have a B+W filter as well and I take it off every now and then because it was giving me inconsistent results. As for ISO, generally the lower ISO photo will produce a better result than a higher ISO photo given that the exposures are correct.

Its probably a combination of both the filter and ISO.
First off, that's a horrible image to judge focus on. I also use a B+W filter and never noticed a difference. I've literally setup shots with/without (20 seconds apart), and seriously cannot see a difference at 100% crop. But, I guess it depends on the situation. I dunno. Mine always stays on and I feel my photos are pretty sharp.
Also, it appears that the shot posted above is shot at ISO 100, which rules out high ISO issues.

Also, it appears that the shot posted above is shot at ISO 100, which rules out high ISO issues.
What camera you using again, Sunking?
Just so we're clear, Sunking was asking us if his picture from the post above is sharper than the one he posted up a day or so ago.
The picture above is ISO 100 with the filter off.
The picture from a few pages back is ISO 1600 with filter on.
I'm just stating that, yes, the picture looks better above than the one he posted a day ago. And its partly because of the lower ISO and "maybe" because of the removal of the filter.
And sunking is using a 40D.

Ok, yea ... you're right. Sorry. I wasn't trying to be snappy, I promise.
I'll go back to lurking now. :)

132/365 - Catheterizing an INVISIBLE WOMAN.
So today, I went to open lab to practice 3 of the procedures that we are being tested on for Monday's practice exam - (1) NG tube insertion, (2) foley catheter insertion, and (3) complex wound dressing changes.
Since we ran out of room in open lab, I made Justin practice on an invisible woman. Here you see him carefully retracting the labia majora to fully expose the urethral meatus. He will then cleanse her and then insert the foley catheter so she can pee.

The other images are two pages back, check them out and tell me what you think.
Maybe you could also recommend a another subject and setup to judge the sharpness.
And I would appreciate your advice on what to do.
