I think if her left hand would have been moved so it didn't break at the wrist and hang on shoulder if it had been moved up on the shoulder more so it followed the natural curve over the body it would look more graceful but again I think the overall feel of the photograph far outweighs any minor perceived flaws. And you could say the girl over his left shoulder (kinda curly hair) has a smaller nose and would have probably been better at the far right of the group (frame left as looking at photo) because the broad light on the girl with the straight hair group rt (frame left) nose looks long in the that light. I think sometimes we get so caught up in over posing that we take the life out of things. To me theres a real LIFE in this photo and that trumps everything. Thats my 2 cents anyway.
Sure, you could say that. You could really pick the hell out of it, if you wanted.
But the most obvious thing you see when you look at the photo is an awkwardly posed hand - So it deters from anything else in the photo to begin with. That is why I pointed it out.
Minor things that can't be changed like the size of noses? Who cares. Major things, like a hand placed deliberately in the frame and can be changed in 2 seconds so it isn't awkward? That is something to point out.

Karizmatik..
i wouldn't even try to engage into an intellectual conversation against Allen in photography myself..
his experience, accolades, and achievements in photography will blow you and me away, and is something i wish i can achieve in 2 life times..
with that said, i think you and i should have a little chat...
i reviewed your blog.. to have an understanding of your photography experience and background..
i notice you have group shots as well.. and of course there isn't ever a perfect photo, and there are many flaws in everything we as humans do..
but what i take out of doing group shots is this:
Create something that has harmony, warm feeling and connectivity.. and thru body positions and head tilts, and hands touching others in a non intrusive way gender to gender..
totally out weighs a single hand or 2 that is meant to be seen because the subjects are day spa providers...
please revisit your own blog and take what you said about my photo and apply it to your group shots and we both can learn from this encounter..

Karizmatik..
i wouldn't even try to engage into an intellectual conversation against Allen in photography myself..
his experience, accolades, and achievements in photography will blow you and me away, and is something i wish i can achieve in 2 life times..
His opinions are his opinions - If he wants to engage into an intellectual conversation with me, I'll warrant him a retort or two, regardless of other peoples opinions regarding his.
i reviewed your blog.. to have an understanding of your photography experience and background..
Thanks for that. But just so you know - My images aren't on display here and aren't up for critique in this thread. Want honest critique? Post. Don't? Then don't post, kind of a simple set up, these forums, even in a sample lens archive.
i notice you have group shots as well.. and of course there isn't ever a perfect photo, and there are many flaws in everything we as humans do..
That is some keen deductive skills you have...
Create something that has harmony, warm feeling and connectivity.. and thru body positions and head tilts, and hands touching others in a non intrusive way gender to gender..
Congratulations. Nonetheless - Your image, in my opinion, is awkward. If you wish to get into a pointless debate where you argue with the person giving you critique, then why bother posting at all? You just want daps on the head? Then okay.. Your images ROCK! Happy?
totally out weighs a single hand or 2 that is meant to be seen because the subjects are day spa providers...
Kind of a moot point, considering your thoughts on "group shots" - If you are trying to achieve harmony, you should be taking everything into consideration; not just a single hand or two that was just "Ahh, I missed it."
please revisit your own blog and take what you said about my photo and apply it to your group shots and we both can learn from this encounter..
Again, my images aren't up for critique here - Your image is. If I wanted to "learn" from this encounter - I'd have supplied an image to do so. I didn't. But the fact that you'd go to the length to counter what another Photographer's work means against your own is saying a lot for you.
Don't worry, I don't expect a reply, just pointing out the obvious.

You can control light placement and quality of light or subject placement within a group so that someone gets light that makes say a longer nose not look so long. I have found over the years that over posing can in some cases take the life out of a photograph. I have seen thousands of portraits that the hands are turned and positioned just perfect the light is perfect for the subject and yet theres no life to the photograph.
If you look at the works of the great portrait photographers its that life that they all have. I'm not saying that this is in that league but there is a life to this image that in my opinion outweighs that hand you speak of. The interaction that was captured and the overall feel of the image to me is whats important and that was captured and very well I might add.

I 110% agree with every point you made here - Which was kind of my point to begin with. The hand looks like it was deliberately posed the way it was; which takes the "life", as you call it, out of the shot for me.

And I think the expressions on all the subjects far outweigh the negative of the hand. ;) To get them all with good expressions and expressions that look like they all belong together is the trump card in my opinion.

Question: Has anyone here went on a trip with just 35L? How did you like it? We're going to Amsterdam soon and I'm considering bringing just 5D, 35L and a polarizing filter. Normally I use 24 + 50mm for city shooting, but I'm going with someone who's not really into photography, so I'm thinking that it would be great to travel light. I guess I can take two or more photos and stitch if I need wider?

Yes I have, because of the same reason: travel light.
In situations where I really wanted to go wider, I just stitched multiple shots, (even handheld) with good results.
I think the 35L is a very versatile lens. I'm sure you'll do fine with just that lens with you :)
p.s.: Isn't your panasonic with pancake lens a good option too? (If you want to travel even lighter)

Thank you for the input! Just what I wanted to hear. Here in Trondheim I'm fine with just 35L, but somehow it feels more "scary" to take only one lens when you go to new places. :) I agree that it's a very versatile lens. Sharp at all apertures and distances, can do everything from landscapes to environmental portraits, street photography and urban/nature details.
I have sold the µ4/3 kit. Image quality was fine, but I always ended up bringing 5D instead because I missed its smooth files, dynamic range and colors.

Helena, I've heard the 35L is a great lens for those like me who are new and especially new to primes.
With that knowledge I would assume its a great single lens to carry and travel light with, yet get great shots and not worry about missing something had you had more lenses with you. So tred lightly and feel comfy with that 35L, I think you'll be fine with just it.

Just picked up a 35L and 24L II, not sure if I can justify keeping them both though considering they are somewhat close in focal lengths, anyone else own both these primes? I picked up the 24L II for an awesome price ($1100) and couldn't resist.

Thank you for the advice! I'm convinced now. :) It'll be relaxing to go with just one lens, if we do get to go... Hope the ashes from Iceland will behave.
Just picked up a 35L and 24L II, not sure if I can justify keeping them both though considering they are somewhat close in focal lengths, anyone else own both these primes? I picked up the 24L II for an awesome price ($1100) and couldn't resist.
Can't wait to try this sucker out!
I have both (and also 50L). I meant to sell 35L when I got the others but just couldn't do it. Now I'm glad to have it. I never use 24LII with 35L, or 35L with 50L. If I bring more than one lens it's always 24+50(+?) or 35+something longer. It works really well.

Lots is probably an overstatement. I have the Ranger, and two Nikon SBs, with a number of lightstands and cheap modifiers (umbrellas and a simple softbox) for them. So it's not really a lot, haha :) I would like to get some pro-grade modifiers soon, such as the Octabank. But then again, I "need" an iMac (working on a 13" laptop screen is less than ideal), and here comes my issue - money. :P

I'm assuming you did additional blurring in post? The DoF seems inconsistent on the asphalt to the left. Good photo overall as the subject is isolated well. I'm just curious (if you did) why you decided to provide more blur on the left? I think for me, visually, I would've liked to see the DoF left intact.

well, without giving away too much of my secret, it has a lot to do with lowered contrast and uping exposure (in lightroom, offset and gamma in PS)

Domino, you can probably achieve similar results by adding a colored layer in PhotoShop and playing around with the opacity along with the blend type...
As mxracer says, you can see there's a bit more to it, but I've found it works reasonably well.
