Ya, it may be silly to some people, but I was pretty excited:D
The one I had was a little funky. The place I bought it from had none left and wasn't going to order their yearly giant order of them for another couple of months, so I hung onto the funky one and waited while they ordered one for me from Canon. Now, If I could only get every lens straight from Canon....

Maybe on the cheap the 35L and 85/1.8 ? :-)
Even after buying the 135, I still use my little 85mm wonder more. When I need the 135, I kick myself for not having it, but more often than not, the 85 will do the job with or without a little foot zooming. But alas, I don't want to hijack this thread with 85L talk.

I know, it was a little difficult shooting this 2 year old party. There was so many of those little rascals I was forced to shoot in Servo, so some shots were a hair off here and there. When you have little ones, you see so many stuck boogers you learn to ignore them

I had been through a tough time with my 35L since getting the 1DmkIII. I was having to shoot loads more pics than I should have needed just to try to get some in focus. After tweaking the focus adjustment to +10 it's going great. I love the 'look' of this lens and it's perfect indoors and works just great with the 85L.

Hi Jeff
My JRT is a real sweetheart. When she sleeps, she really is in deep sleep so I was a tad naughty and parted her lips to show off her teeth for the shot. She never gets upset with us for playing with her - even when asleep. We are real lucky to have her. I have had so many dogs before her and this one has a temperment of a saint. I wish my sons were as patient and obedient!

Hi and thanks!
I bounced a 580exII off the back wall and ceiling. If I remember right there was some white balance adjustment in post due to the strong colors of the room.

the 35mm is just a remarkable lens for representing what is seen, no muss, no fuss, and no zooming.

I just received this lens last Thursday, and I finally had a day off to take it out on the town.
Inevitably, my first shot was of the girlfriend on our outing to the Vancouver Aquarium.
I was initially going to post a "Just got my 35L - initial impressions and thoughts", however, decided not to because practically everything I have read about this lens is absolutely true. Superb build, jaw-dropping colours and bokeh, great at 1.4, brilliant at 1.8 and beyond. It truly does have that "magical quality" to its images.
After a day with it, I know for certain that this will be my all-time favourite lens.
Anyhow, this is the absolute FIRST shot taken with this lens - minimal photoshopping/processing done:

Congrats on the purchase! I can't believe how stunning this lens is. You really don't need to do much to the image except for capturing it. Sharpness and colours are there from the get-go, and really, minimal photoshopping is required to produce a nice image.
I can go on and on and on and on about this amazing lens!

I am amazed at this 35L but I am trying to decide if i should get rid of my 24-70L for it. I like it but I enjoy my 50 1.4 so much more and I know I would love the 35L. Any suggestions?
chmod
9th of May 2008 (Fri), 22:56
That's a tough decision as the 24-70 is one of the best non-primes they make, with the 70-200 f/2.8 as the other of my two personal favorite non-primes.
I am not sure it can replace it since the 24-70 is more flexible.
I love my 35 but unless you shot a ton of shots at 35 historically, it might be a stretch to advise it as a replacement, per say.
Despite the overwhelming popularity of the 35 after people use it, don't lose sight of what an incredible lens is the 24-70.
I know, this is a non-answer but you pose a very difficult question.

^ it's definitely understandable that you couldn't answer the question. There really isn't an answer. It's just i feel like with with my prime lens you have to make things work and things can get a little bit artsier per say, instead of zooming in and out. It's a hard decision, I wish I could just keep the 24-70 and get a 35L, but it wouldn't be anytime soon. lol

If you are able to master the 24-70L and aren't hurting for the wider aperture, I'd stick to 24-70L. I wish I could've made that lens work for me, but it doesn't take much to confuse me and I just kept missing my shots by a small amount of movement. :(

I just got mine today, so for groupshots about 3-4 people, f/1.4 is not usable right? since there will be very shallow DOF? and only partly will be in focus. I might be wrong, so what aperture should I use for group pictures then?
chmod
12th of May 2008 (Mon), 11:35
Yikes, you need to work with your gear and find out. Take some test shots, take notes, dial it in.
In general, if you stop it down to f/5.6 it'll be like a razor across the field of vision. f/2.8 will also likely work but keep an eye on the edges of of the frame.
No cookie-cutter answer without more data. Did I miss seeing what you use? Full or crop? It can make a difference.

I agree w/ chmod, it depends on what body you're using and your framing/arrangement of the subjects. In my experience f/1.4 is usable on a crop camera for small groups and full/half body shots as long as the group is lined up perpendicular to the camera. At 8ft, you have about a 10 inch depth of field w/ a crop.
See here:

I am using 5d, and found that at 1.4 the focus is very selective thus group shot more than 2 persons need f/2.0 or smaller.
so I need to learn the magic in this lens....
thanks for the link!
