oh yah. gratz' on getting that FF camera you wanted!

Wouldn't you know it but I ended up with a FF camera in the end as well. I sold off my second 7D as well, lol. i have a 5Dc and finally perfectly happy with it! I sold of my 17-55 as well. I picked up a 17-40L and 200 F2.8L for my 5D. Next up is the 35L and 135L.

so whats your lens lineup looking like now with your 5d2?

Thanks dude!

Currently I'm gonna run with:

UWA: Sigma 12-24
Walkaround: 35L
Telephoto: 70-200 f/4 IS
Long tele: 100-400
Macro: Tokina 100

The only thing I might be pining for is a dedicated portrait lens. 85L II is VERY expensive. Perhaps I will take a look at the Sigma 85 when it comes out, or a 135L (I prefer 85 over 135 though, 135 is a little long for my liking).

nice setup you got going there now.

Personally I am waiting for the Sigma 85 myself to see how it fairs in performance and price.... if its anything like the Sigma 50 1.4(especially the AF speed) and comes in at around $800US.... that lens will find its way in my bag. If not then I will just get the Canon 85 1.8 and be happy with it. Although I dont have all the lenses but my setup should look something like this over the next little bit:

Canon 17-40
Canon 35L
Canon 85 1.8
Canon 135L
Canon 200L F2.8
Canon 1.4x TC.

I have the 17-40L and 200L already and the 35L is the next lens I will get. Leaving just the 85 and 135 to buy.

It's pretty pointless to have both the 200 2.8L and the 135L with 1.4TC...the 135L takes a TC very well so you will have a 190 2.8 that is still very sharp wide open. Personally, id sell the 200L and get the 135L

Yah, I had to send mine in for calibration a couple months ago after...it started to backfocus. I've had the lens for about 8 or 9 months, and it was definitely sharper back when i got it that it is now, even after being re-calibrated.

Still pretty gosh darn sharp tho

how can that happen? how can a lens that was sharp and focussing right then stat back-focussing? is that even possible?

Happens all the time. I think the 35L may be prone to backfocusing. I hear a lot of people having the same issue. I had to send mine in for the same thing a while back also. No biggie. Just makes me sad being without this lens for a week.

really? so if i own a lens right now that is tack sharp and AF is spot on.... it could in 6 months back/front focussing just out of the blue on the same body?

can someone explain the mechanics behind something like this happening?

i mean i understand when you first get a lens being front or back focussed but later on becoming that way when it first wasn't seems just, well, wrong!

so you decided to keep the 200? its funny, because i sold that 200 and my 17-40 to fund a 135, knowing that i would eventually rebuy them both. and i'm now thinking that 35L will be next lens to complete my line-up, giving us the exact same ideal kit. :) hope you enjoy the lens.

Yeah i dunno about the 200 F2.8L still. I want to keep it but im still not sure. It is an awesome lens thats for sure.... but i think i want the 35L and 135L more right now so i might sell it and get it later on again if i feel shorthanded with the 135L. The 17-40L however is probably here to stay in my bag for some time unless i won the lotto or something and i could afford the 14L for landscapes.

i mean i understand when you first get a lens being front or back focussed but later on becoming that way when it first wasn't seems just, well, wrong!

It's like any other mechanical motor system. It simply requires calibration to ensure it's precise and performing as intended. Shaking, bumping, dropping (oh no!), and even standard usage after time would be a few reasons you would need to get it calibrated.

Here's a little about how AF works and calibration.

In the Canon AF system, the camera determines, with the lens focus wherever is happens to be when AF is done, how far off the focus is (the "focus offset"), in terms of a normalized "geometric" measure, rather like measuring, with a split image prism focusing aid, precisely how far in mm the two images are misaligned on the focusing screen.

This value is fed to the lens. The microprocessor in the lens, based on that value, together with the current position of the lens focusing cam (from a digital position encoder), and using an algorithm that relates subject distance, focusing cam position, and the corresponding focus offset in the camera, calculates what new focusing cam position should produce ideal focus. It then directs a servomechanism to move the focusing cam to that calculated position.

And that's the end of the story - if that position is "properly computed", we get proper focus; otherwise, we don't. The camera doesn't "take a second look" at the focus offset and, if focus is not yet ideal, give the lens further instructions as to how to refine it.

It is an "open loop" system, rather like computing where a howitzer should be pointed so that the shot fired will land on the target, based on where a test shot, fired with the gun pointed wherever it happened to be pointed, lands.

The algorithm is defined by tables in the lens' memory, which have been particularized to this individual copy of the lens during manufacture (so that they accurately relate to the particular tolerances in the focusing cam mechanism, the exact behavior of the lens elements, and so forth).

If for whatever reason the values in those tables are not (any longer) correct for this particular lens, then the AF system will not set the focusing cam to the proper position, even though the camera correctly reports the amount of "focus offset".

"Recalibrating" the lens involves updating the entries on those tables to produce proper behavior.

That said ... It would probably be a good idea to have your lens calibrated every 18-24 months or so. Some professional photogs do it more frequently to ensure their equipment is in top performance.

It seemed the Sigma 30 was the best choice, but the pictures in this thread just blow me away.. every single one of them...

Is there any reason I should get the Sig 30 instead for my t1i, price being no issue in this case? Should the extra 5mm factor into my decision at all?

The 35L just seems magical. Great shots, everyone.

Ugh, been reading through this thread for hours a day for the past week or so. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this one to take photos of my upcoming newborn.

I know the majority of 35L users, especially the ones posting in this thread, are shooting on full-frame... but I'm using mine on a T1i, and I went through the same dilemma before going with the 35L over the Sigma 30. If it helps, I've never looked back, and enjoy using the 35L every opportunity I get :D 5mm at this perspective would make the difference between one step forward or back, so I don't think it's worth worrying about.

There are more pictures from each set if you're interested in seeing them. I've linked the description of the photo to the blog post with them. I pretty much ONLY shoot with the 35L. I'd say about 85% of my shots are the 35, 10% are the 16-35@16, and 5% with the 70-200. This is my faaaavorite lens ever =)

I have tried to use Model Mayhem and really haven't had much luck with it. I usually get someone who flakes out on me or wants to do some ridiculous studio shoot with costumes and props, etc...which just really isn't my style at all. Maybe I will have to resort to facebook status updates requesting models. Glad to see that it has been working for you, your friends and models are always so great with the camera.

I'm thinking about it but I haven't done it yet and I'm not sure I will. I go back and forth. But the reason I went 35L over the SIG 30 is different. I did a series of paid shoots a few months back and without going into much detail, the SIGMA was too inconsistent in very controlled environment. Shots that should have been sharp were not. And since I got paid for the shoots, it really ticked me off to have mixed results like that. I couldn't trust that lens after that. So I went with what many consider "the best" in that range. It pained me to drop that much coin on the 35L, I admit it, but I was kind of forced into it.

Im pretty excited lol

goes without saying i should think!

I will be getting this lens very soon as well! Im just not sure what to pair it with.... the Canon 85 1.8, sigma 85 1.4 if it turns out to be a good lens or the Canon 100L Macro!!!

I could really use the F/1.8 or F/1.4 indoors and for increased subject isolation but at the same time the 100L Macro has IS and is razor sharp at F/2.8 and not to mention macro capable!!!! Arrrgghhhh i hate deciding on lenses. Or I guess i could get an 85 and 100 LOL and just spend the money.

Lenses, they get me every time!

i think 85 makes more sense then a 50 to pair with a 35.

It depends... i use 50 FOV on crop, but just I sometimes require just a tad wider, and that is 35 :) I would probably use both of them :)

From experience, I wouldn't buy the 50mm. I'd go with the 85mm over it. Only because you won't use the 50mm once you put the 35L on your camera. Trust me. I bought the 50mm 1.4 before the 35L, and will be selling the 50mm soon. I haven't used it in over 6 months!

I feel the focal length is too close to even bother with a non-L lens. If you do get anything, I'd buy a focal length farther away from 35mm.

Just to clarify ... there's nothing wrong with the 50 1.4 ... it's a great lens, it just doesn't compare to the 35L.

You know what, TorqueJunkie ... on second thought. You already own the 70-200mm f4.
So, you already have 85mm covered. Why loose the wide angle to replace it with a focal legth you already have? Do you not shoot wide at all?

If I were you ... I'd throw a 10-22mm or 17-40L in there. But, that's just me.

Well, Im not going to sell the Tammy until I purchase the 35L because I have to cover a big event at the very end of July. I only use the Tammy when I am shooting on the short end, I figure since I do that when I get the 35L it probably wont leave the camera much anyways lol. I am wanting something to shoot a lot of portraits with and I think the 35L will give a different feel and the 85mm for when I want to be a little farther away. I do plan on upgrading to a 70-200 f/2.8L. That will probably be a little while after I get the 35L though.

I see what you mean though, I think my post was a little misleading lol. I am using some paychecks from work to cover the 85mm f/1.8 and keeping the Tammy for a while. I'll pick up a used 17-40L probably around the time I make an upgrade on the 70-200 though. Ill be sucked dry after I get the 35L for a while. Gonna have to spend a lot of time to recoup after that lol. My goal is to have my main focal lengths all primes. Only time I will use a zoom is for when I need a UWA or when I'm shooting a track event (which I do a lot of) which is why Ill always keep a 70-200.
