Very nice!! I really like this family photo!
Did you crop out this picture though?
Thanks - they were cropped top and bottom - I like the more panoramic look
these are cool. were they wide open?
cheers for that - they were shot f2.2, f1.8, f1.8 respectively, this lens is so good for environmental portraiture

The only thing holding me back is that my 24-70 is my main work horse for events, and for the weather sealing. I shot the US Open of Surf with it and my camera was covered in sand dust because so many people were kicking up sand.. gotta love those rubber gaskets..

Interesting lens. I rented it to use at my niece's wedding, and I liked what I got out of it. Definitely gotta keep the DoF in mind, though. And it wasn't quite as wide as I thought it would be on my 5D1. Still, it was quite nice, and I think it'll be on my wish list.
This one was wide open:

The lens is flawless, but after buying the 24L (and expecting a big change in FL) I was really surprised that there isn't a whole lot of difference. I though the gap between 50 and 24 would be too big but it turns out it's perfect :) which is a real shame as it's such a beautiful lens! I just want to keep my setup as simple as possible :)

Ok, gotcha. I like wide, wondered what the 24L and 35L looked like side by side, focal length wise, guess I could do some tests with my 24-70 and see.

I wish I could keep both... I'll probably get it i the future again or when a Mk II comes out.
The 35 has served me very well. But I really need something wider for my paid gigs. I'm actually getting a 17-40 but it will only be used mainly for video and maybe group shots.

I am quickly learning that there are some situations where you just CAN'T shoot at F1.4 haha. It's almost impossible to nail focus when close to the MFD at F1.4 that's for sure. Especially with the normal "slop" of AF.

? ? ?
I seem to nail it quite well. Maybe use a fine focus screen. The stock screen is calibrated for f4 dof, so you can't see any DOF shallower than f4 through the viewfinder.

So If I put in an EG-S screen, I can see the DoF better for my 2.8 and lower lenses? (Through the view finder)
Or does it need to be calibrated? I use a lot of lenses and 1.2 - 2.8 f stops...so seeing a better quality DoF in the view finder would be nice.

Thanks. We thought the blanket was needed because our dogs use that area for their business... But, I agree it would have been better without the blanket.

A few from a recent shoot I did with my friend, Adrienne. Playing around with light modifiers and speedlights...literally.
These were all taken in the early evening in a local park using one or two speedlights and the 5DmkII + 35L combo...and umbrellas...lots of umbrellas.

Yes. I had my 430ex ii in an umbrella softbox camera left.
Would you be able to expand on what equipment this is exactly?
I have never really used flash apart from in very low light situations on weddings where I have tended to just bounce it. Over the next couple of months though I want to start learning a bit more about using it.
Thanks

? ? ?
I seem to nail it quite well. Maybe use a fine focus screen. The stock screen is calibrated for f4 dof, so you can't see any DOF shallower than f4 through the viewfinder.
I am saying that you can't always rely on AF at the MFD at F1.4. It has a tendency to lock on slightly off your intended target and at F1.4 that could kill it. It's a different story manually focusing the lens and/or using live view. Even then though, F1.4 sometimes doesn't have enough in focus regardless of nailing the focus. Step back a bit though and F1.4 is brilliant. Just gotta get use to the usability of the lens at F1.4. I found myself using F2.0-F2.8 when close and opening up to F1.4 when a few feet back(4ish).

Sure, once you use OCF you won't go back. It isn't pratical for weddings or shooting on the move, but for portraits it is awesome.
My setup is cheap and simple, but I'll upgrade eventually.
I use one of Steve Kaeser's softbox umbrellas on one of his stands: http://www.skaeser.com/servlet/the-607/40%22-UMBRELLA-SOFTBOX-REFLECTIVE/Detail
You also need an adapter. I use the Manfrotto 026 adapter. And last thing you need is a way to trigger the flash. For now I'm using a ETTL sync cord from FlashZebra: http://www.flashzebra.com/ttlcords/ettlcords/index.shtml.
With this setup I've been using my 430ex ii or borrowing a friends 580ex ii.
I want to eventually get some remote triggers (get rid of the PIA cord) and have my eyes on some Alien Bees studio lights.
There is a lot of great information in the flash section of this forum.

I believe the stock screen actually is good til F3.5 but I could be wrong. The high precision screen can show lower than that, the problem is that the VF gets darker. Not sure how usable it is with F2.8 lenses once that's installed.

adding this lens to my wish list...just wondering after reading another members post regarding selling this lens and upgrading to a 24L II??? arent they in the same level as an L lens and have different focal lengths...i was thinking one would compliment the other, esp for a person who loves to shoot only primes???
anyway...on with the show, keep the great pics coming :)

One thing to note is that the 35L can be a little prone to flare — it's not bad, but it's probably one of the weaker points of the lens and therefore stands out the most (since it's so strong everywhere else). Still, it's relatively controlled and you just need to adjust yourself around it.
So, I had to work a bit for this shot, but I'm happy with the result. And six months later, I still don't know what I want to add to the 35L. From day one it was going to be the 135L, but it just doesn't fit the theme. 85L is an option but it's crazy expensive (could buy a lot of lighting gear for that price, and a 135L!).
PS: 35L + body shots = nothing else compares.

Stunning shots mate, all of them. When you mention work a bit for the shot, do you mean in regards to avoiding flare?

Exactly that. Granted, most lens' would flare under the conditions, but the 35L has a slightly shallower hood than the 24-70, so even at the same FL it will flare a tad more. But of course, everything has its downsides, and that's really the only downside to the 35L; and that's a pretty good trade-off considered how strong it is everywhere else.
