Thanks very much. I've been looking at that image, thinking I might have gone to heavy with the ND grad filter. Maybe I should lighten the sky up a tad, perhaps 1/2 stop. What do you think?

Took the 35L as my only lens to our trip to disney this past weekend and though I was initially concerned that I would miss my 24-70L terribly, I did not at all. The 35L + 5D combo was absolutely fantastic, especially indoors!

I see what you mean. I agree, it looks great, but it would look better evened out. Maybe instead use some masking and try to add Clarity to the far part of the sky and the slightly hazy part of the distant canyon. I think that would even it all out.

I did this self portrait a couple of nights ago with the 35L.

Well the time has come. After waiting for 2 years I finally bought the lens I've been wanting from the start. It arrived yesterday and the weather was only OK, so these are just some snap shots running around the house and yard.
All I can say is it's worth the wait of trying to save for it. I sure wish I had it sooner, but having to wait makes it all that much sweeter! I got it a bit sooner then I hoped as it is now my 10th wedding anniversary gift as well! :D
first my husband after a bunch of shots he was getting a bit annoyed
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w287/gardengirl13/jeremy.jpg
we are fostering a stray cat we found until he can get adopted from a local no kill shelter (we're too allergic to keep him ,) he now loves the camera and almost put a nose print on my new lens

This one kind of shocked me a bit, I didn't realize the CA would be so bad, but it's liveable since when controlled better the lens is the greatest! I do have to figure out how to control it better when it comes to low light gigs. Lots of weird lighting and brights and darks. Plus my husband took this shot, so I'm not sure if I could have done better (he doesn't do much shooting)

btw your recording studio photos were most of the reason I ate ramen for a month and got this lens :)
Ha ha! Sorry to help make you spend out on your 35L but it's an awesome lens as your pics demonstrate. I have posted enough recording studio pictures for a while but if you're following my progress this gallery that I shot last week was taken just with the 35L and 85L. They're a great partnership :) http://recordproduction.smugmug.com/gallery/5155602_gJJPP

Very minimal Lightroom on this one - like 2 sliders.Whats the fun in that? ;) Looks nice though.
I was wondering if anyone tried some fireworks shots-this was my first time trying. It was more like a "shoot and hope it turns out ok" fare, using f/1.4 and ISO 1600 and hoping the metering automagically worked itself out. Needless to say this probably isn't the best way of doing it (I got maybe 10 keepers out of 150 or so).

These pictures are absolutely stunning. No doubt about that.
Yet, not been able to use one, I wonder what the great advantage of the 35/1.4 is over the 50/1.4 on a 5D.
Considering that the 50/1.4 is also very sharp with a nice bokeh and is like 1/3th of the price.
Is it just the FOV??

50 1.4 has lame micro usm on it. It hunts in low light (obviously less than the 50 1.8), but it does. The AF also is not as fast because of this micro usm.
It's sad because I would gladly pay for what the 85 1.8 goes for to get the 50 1.4 with faster AF and better low light abilities.
35 is solid, but the sigma 30 for crop does a lot of what the 35 can do.

in my opinion, the FOV makes the two lenses completely different and tough to compare. the great advantage of the 35 over the 50 is that there is more to put in the frame! it just seems like the perfect FOV for the type of photography that I do.

Great shots Canerino!
The 35L looks just incredible, I've been through this gallery front to back many times. I can't help but think that so many 1.3 crop and FF users are using this lens, which on my 1.6 bodies would really make it closer to the fov of 24-26mm. It makes mathematical sense for my to get the 24L as I like the fov the 1.3 and FF users are getting, but there's just something about the 35L that seems better to me, can't explain it!
TheHoff
6th of July 2008 (Sun), 10:43
Could that be because a majority in this thread that pay for the L goodness also have full frame or a 1D series? I think it is rarer to find the fast L primes on 1.6 crops, right? Not that it is a bad thing or unheard of but I think you're falling into the trap that you're seeing the 35 used a lot on full frames whereas you're right in thinking the 24 would probably be better for you.
I know I've said it before in your thread, but don't think there is any real image quality difference between the two; the 24 is excellent all around and if the focal length works for you on the crop, get it.
Dorman
6th of July 2008 (Sun), 10:56
I think you might be right - 24 and 50 primes on my cameras would be much closer to the fov of the 35/85 primes that the 1.3 and FF shooters are working with. During my wedding shoot yesterday I started thinking that with a 70-200 on one body, I'd probably be comfortable shooting with 24/50 primes on the other to deal with low-light rather than the 17-55 IS.
That being said, I'm not sure what's happening with my body situation, if I added a FF camera I'd probably want the 35 fov, and it would also be a good "normal" on my crop camera. But again, that's up in the air. I'd like to buy for today as well as for down the road, which makes it a tougher choice. 24L might be best for me today, 35L might be better for long term over the next few years.

I just let my 35mm F/2 go - while I did like the 35mm FOV I can't help but thinking a bit wider would be nice and work well with my style.

35L is pretty nice "only one lens" solution for 1.6x camera in my hometown, since its closest thing to traditional 50mm field of view. However, I would love to try 24L and 100mm macro as two lens combo on vacation trip, because I know that I don't use 35L in vacation trips (tried it couple times, it got very little use or I didn't use it at all).
What comes to archives, I think it would be useful to separate some of the lens archives (24L and 35L for starts) so that there would be one thread for photographs with 1.3x and FF cameras and another thread for 1.6x crop cameras. At least on 24L archives, I am always wondering whether this photograph was taken on 1.6x crop or with something else.

Yes that might be useful for the archives, but unlikely to happen! :)
I think the 24 or 35 would be a great combo along with the 100mm macro (which I already have). If I decide that FF is not in my near future I will probably opt for the 24L for the fov it offers on 1.6 crop - although I don't think you can go wrong with the 35L either!

No need to separate anything as long as people state what body was the shot taken with or leave EXIF intact. :)

I decided I should try to stick with less PP on these to give people an honest impression of pictures right out of the camera. These are all raws processed with default settings in DPP, no adjustments at all.

Ive decided that downtown Seattle has very little to do. Especially at 7am on a sunday morning. So what is one to do? Take picture of the hotel room with your 35L, of course. All shot in raw but gone straight though DPP w/ normal settings, no other pp

I overtook the desk with my crap. I actually used those L lens carrying pouches because I sort of just threw them (not literally) into my backpack and wanted some more protection. @100% crop, I can actually read the title of that POTN thread im reading, as well as most of the text. You can almost see the name on my badge, but not quite.

did you read the words DOWNTOWN, SUNDAY, and 7AM? :P. I went to some other places with friends and had lots of fun and liked it a lot, but downtown really sucks. To keep this on topic, heres one from seattle :P

lol. Yup, I live 5 minutes from downtown, and I'm never bored ;). Then again, I don't wake up at 7am unless I'm going surfing or snowboarding!
