Another one from my files.

A walk-about in Tokyo. I still have a big hole in my lens lineup for a fast 35mm. Missing my 1.4L more and more. Especially since getting the 5DmkII.

How does it perform on 50d? I am trying to decide between 35mm 1.4
and 24mm 1.4 as a replacement of my 28mm 1.8.

That particular shot was made with the 5Dc but I did also have my 40D or 50D at that time (l can't remember which right now). I too had the 28 1.8 and wrestled between the 24mm or 35mm 1.4's. I liked the 35 better because the FOV feels more natural on both a crop body and FF body.

Thanks for the replay! What was your impression moving from 28mm 1.8 to 35L?
Is there a huge difference in centre sharpness, since corners are not visible on crop?
I wonder if I should go ahead and upgrade the lens or keep the 28mm for now and buy 5dmkii, which is next on my list?

Tough to say. I had the 28mm only for the crop bodies and I sold it when I picked up the 35mm so I never could do a side-by-side comparison. I can say that the 28mm is a very solid performer. I purchased the 35mm at the same time as the 24-105mm and I ended up using the zoom more (due to the IS and the fact that I don't regularly shoot sports/portraits) and that was why I sold the 35mm.

Ordinarily I advise people to upgrade lenses before bodies but since there is a substantial difference between an APS-C body and a FF body, I would put your money on the 5D - especially since you already have a good complement of lenses.

So, what is this monster camera ? ;)

It is a regular sized camera inside a padded "quiet" box.

http://www.soundblimp.com/Default.htm

The Jacobson Sound Blimp is a housing for professional 35mm Canon and Nikon cameras which effectively eliminates the noise created by their operation. Silencing is essential in areas where extraneous noise cannot be tolerated or would prove distracting; i.e., motion picture and television sound stages, theatrical plays, surveillance, wildlife, and sporting events such as golf. Furthermore, the Sound Blimp provides protection for cameras where environmental conditions can affect delicate camera mechanisms. It helps protect cameras and lenses from the adverse effects of sand, dust, and sudden changes in temperature and humidity.

How does it perform on 50d? I am trying to decide between 35mm 1.4
and 24mm 1.4 as a replacement of my 28mm 1.8.

I figured I could put the 35L to good use on my 50D right away, and if/when I manage to pony up for a 5D (trying to hold out for the MkIII), then this great lens will already be in my bag to use on FF.

It has pretty much idled my 28-75, even though it's a prime. I did a little Lightroom database crunching on my 28-75 and found that I was using it a lot within a few mm of 35mm, so I figured a 35mm prime would still work for me in many of those same situations. It has. I'm glad I bought it.

Hey,

I'd seen a lot from this lens here and around and decided to buy one. Now that I have one, I'm wondering if I'm getting the normal "bad CA" or if mine is an exceptional case. I would appreciate anyone's opinions!

I know shooting wide open is going to get you some CA in the contrasty areas, but.. this just seems extreme. Any advice is welcome!

These are all 100% crops, all 1.4. Generally, backlighting from an outdoor source. This is longitudinal CA, if I understand correctly.

In the top image, the areas of relatively low contrast in the door have a green CA in the mix. The blinds (lower image) are washed out in a purple glow.

Whoa. Yea, those don't look right at all.

What's the EXIF? And what body is it mounted on?

4nick8
21st of December 2010 (Tue), 00:16
Here are the full photos. At web sizes the CA isn't as glaring, but still noticable. If these were to be print you would certainly see the same fringing as above. Even at these smaller sizes the purple is still eye catching.

Oh, and these are definitely not very artful photos, purely test shots.

As far as EXIF, it was f1.4 at I believe 1000 ISO, varied shutter speeds. The lens was mounted on a 5dII.

Let me know what you think!

Woot mine came in today and after a long 10 hour day I picked it up. I had to/have to play with MA to get it right at 1.4 but I'm very impressed with the colors and contrast of this little lens. It's going to take some getting used to the FL as I usually shoot portraits with nothing less than 50mm but It'll be worth it. My favorite combo is the 35 L and 70-200 MK II.

First experiments with my new 35mm 1.4 by day. It's really hard for me to get a feeling for the object-distance/DOF thing...

Nice shot!

hey guys how is this lens on a cropped body? I have a 50 1.4 and find it to be too long. I'm thinking of maybe selling both my canon 15-85 and 50 1.4 to fund this lens. What would you guys do?

I know some would suggest Sigma 30 f1.4 but personally I think the 35L is so much better and it works on FF. The chance of getting a sub-standard copy is probably lower with the 35L too.

If you have a chance to try it at the shop I'd definitely go for the Sigma. The price you pay for the quality it gives you -if focus is dead on- is just too hard to miss. The 35L has a great color and overwhelming sharpness too, mind you, and it may give you a slight edge on corner sharpness at the widest apertures at the cost of being heavier and bigger. Also, I find Sigma's bokeh a little smoother (very similar lens to the 50mm Sigmalux). Either way, I just don't find the 35L four times better costing four times more, but to each his own.

Hi Mike,

These are over a year or two old now so I can't remember exactly but I probably did a little PP in Light Room or Capture One. I sold my mkIII a while back and really miss it, I'm very close to getting a mkIV but am keeping off credit cards and am saving. I found the mkIII and 35L (and 85L) to be great partners. The DR on the 1 series was very good and seems to render a more film like look.

Thanks for your posting of the snaps again :)

simply gorgeous.. definitely filmlike. They really stand out in the midst of the cold feeling many outstanding, artistic, andhigh quality pics present on the thread seem to give off.

I know the 1D series has superb dynamic range.... film has about 11 stops of dynamic range, and only the 1D series has that range ( with the 1ds iii having 12 ev range, 1dIV a bit less at 10.5 ev range). Other Canon's don't reach 9EV range.)

I'mwith you on the credit card thing... saving for a new body for June 2011. After a lot of research, it will definietly be a 1D series body. My only trouble is I hear 1ds IV may not arrive in 2011, and if it does i suspect it to be maybe too far outside of my budget to justify it... but if i get the 1D IV in june, i might have buyers remorse if the price difference turns out to be $2k or less.

That's on mine too but I'm not sure if they sell a 72mm set or if it's only 77mm. Would I need a step up ring for it?

I freaking love this lens! The colors are insane (and I'm colorblind!). Here's one of my mom getting yet another ipod for Christmas/her 50th b-day. I don't know why my dad think she would need 3 ipods but whatevs..

Thanks - here's the out-of-cam ;)
I'm quite impressed how sharp the lens is - even that cropped.

Very nice Jamey. The first one just pulls me in; I want to know what I'll find if I could walk trough it.

I'm really liking the gritty processing of #2 as well. Very cool! I was bored at my parents house so I started taking random pics of the Christmas scenes that were still up. I can't wait to do an actual portrait session with this!

First a nothing shot out in the front yard. I love the colors this renders.

This is my first ever attempt to take portrait photos, and I also decided to try sun flares as well This was just a spontaneous walk in the park. What do you guys think?

I'm finding this a little softer than I'd like wide open and I'm not sure if it's hitting focus. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it hits perfect at +15 MA. I know shooting at 1.4 is a little challenge but I think I'd be used to it by now. Here's a few from my cousins b-day today. (I still love the colors)

Thanks--I think this was actually one of the first times I stopped it down enough to see what the sunstars would look like. :)

Looks fine to me. I noticed you stopped down a bit to f1.8 on 1 and 3. I usually do the same. #2 is very sharp but of course stopped down even more.
