My 40D came thursday..finally really got around to playing with it today. First reports indicate 40D and 35L get along pretty well together. These are all shot in raw processed through dpp with standard style, no additions. Imo most of these look better at contrast +1 (lemme go add that to my picture styles), but I left them plain for demo here.
Another lambo from the same dealer....parked on the street this time.

Ive had a few frustrations with my 35L focus recently, mainly focusing related. But then I get stuff like that and I shut up.

Very little PP. +1 contrast through raw (always for my 40D), then added slight vignetting and some minor levels changes, so the only pp sharpening with the dpp default (3?).

Thanks! I have a very basic routine for web sized pics. I normally use a default of 4 in DPP and occasionally bump it up if the picture is too soft. If I need to do extra work in photoshop, as with some of these, and additional sharpening is still required then I will often use smart sharpen. In the case of my 85L and 135L, even wide open, I have found that more often than not I do not need to do any additional sharpening beyond the default in DPP.

35 isn't that wide unless it's on a FF camera. Even still, it's not wide enough to cause noticeable distortion.

TheGreatDivorce

If you're close enough, there's distortion with anything. Perspective distortion is a matter of subject distance, not just focal length.

What a wonderful thread. I have browsed it for hours (at least it seems like it).

Unfortunately, I have a problem:

I have 50/1.4, 85/1.8 and 135L and love them all. I needed something a little wider, so I decided to invest in 35L, but I'm really disappointed. It doesn't seem to want to focus at all with far away objects (not even large ones like houses). Everything nearer than 15 meters or so is fine, but beyond that it either frontfocuses by many meters or everything turns out slightly or very blurry. That can't be right, can it? :(

It does well on stuff close by, but not better than my 50/1.4. I really wanted someting to match my 135L at this focal length.

UPDATE: Since I posted about a problem I feel it's best to let you know that it has worked out. There is nothing wrong with the lens - it's me. :) Since I have used fast lenses before I didn't expect a learning curve with the 35L, but it turned out that there was one. Hello!

Can somebody please help me? Today I received my 35L, which I bought because of the good low-light capacities and the narrow DOF/nice bokeh, especially for a wide-angle. I've seen a lot of good & nice examples of this in your posts. And a wide-angle was the only thing I still needed.
But... where's the bokeh? Even if I focus on something two metres away (for example a pillar), a building 100 meters away is still sharp, even at 1.4 (lots of CA, by the way). Only if you focus on something reeeeeealy close (<50 cm), you get bokeh. I really like pictures with a narrow DOF, otherwise I believe i might as well have bought a Sony Cybershot...
I know many of you guys/girls own a 5D, which creates a nicer DOF than a 400D/40D beacause of the full frame, but I also saw lots of pictures from crop sensor camera's that looked really nice. Am I doing something wrong?
Does anyone have good advice on this? Is the 50 1.4 better? Any other suggestion for a wide-angle/standard lens with narrow DOF/nice bokeh? If there is one, I hope I can still exchange/return this one, because it almost costed me a month's salary, and therefore a couple of months to pay my creditcard bill... Some pictures are really nice, but it's not what I thought it would be.
Thanks in advance for anyone who can give me some advice.

Samples would be good. These two are test shots straight after I received my 35L. As you can see, there is definitely bokeh!

Thanks Pekka and Rudi for your responses on 35L-bokeh. I'll keep this short, just wanted to show what I mean. These are the only ugly test-pictures I didn't delete. I was hoping that the background would blur in these pictures.
Focus on lanterns, about f2 (but f1.4 doesn't make a difference). PS Rudi second picture is gorgeous.

In order to get the kind of bokeh other posters here are showing, I think you will need to be much closer to the object you are focusing on.

Thank you guys, don't want to 'steal' this forum, but don't know what to do. As I understand, there's no difference between one 35mm-lens and another (for instance sigma 30 1.4)? Bokeh is determined by the focal length and not by lens construction?
I'm jealous of your pictures! Last example, f2.0, focus on black house on the left, sharp 'til the right edge. Too bad I deleted all the other pictures because I thought they weren't useful.

Hey Speedster, where in Seattle are the Kubota Gardens, never heard of them either!

thatkatmat
28th of August 2008 (Thu), 00:31
I was wondering the same thing....so...

The Kubota Garden is located at Renton Avenue S. and 55th Avenue South in the Rainier Beach neighborhood of South Seattle.

On I-5, leave the freeway at Pacific Highway South/East Marginal Way, Exit 158
Turn left toward Martin Luther King, Jr. Way; continue up the hill on Ryan Way
Turn left on 51st Avenue South
Turn right on Renton Avenue South
Turn right on 55th Avenue South to parking lot

(South end, almost Renton)
:)

Bingo!

DoF is not just dependent on your lens' maximum aperture. Obviously focal length also changes things, but it is also affected by camera-to-subject and subject-to-background distances. Even sensor/film size, but I digress...

thanks! just FYI ... both of those were shot at f/1.4 (or maybe 1.8, can't remember, but I
basically never shoot over f/2). You can see the DOF is still fairly deep, even with a FF sensor.

It's mostly about subject distance, and viewing size.

So far I haven't needed anything wider, but since I plan to sell my 24-105L I recently got the 24/2.8. It's small and light, so it's no burden to carry it "just in case". The 24L would have been sweet, but I felt it was better for me to spend more money on the 35mm since that's the focal length I use the most.

i'm pretty sure it would, brad. i feel like the optical differences between the two are basically nil. my 35 is a bit sharper wide open, and the 24 is a bit sharper stopped down. beyond that, it's really the focal length of the 35 that I love.

i haven't tried, but i think the 24 on a crop body would be sweet!

Just got this lens the other day, pretty amazed by both its sharpness and bokeh

Image quality much better than the 50 1.4 at 1.4 but then it should be given the price difference

Didnt really think would get such nice oof backgrounds from a comparatively short lens, DOF shallower and bokeh nicer than my 70-200 f4l is at the long end

i have a 17-40 f4l and dont really click with it, its a nice range on a crop for me, but seems kinda slow and lacking "something" i think the 35 1.4l has that something

anyway ill shutup and post some pics from a recent experiment

The more I look in this thread, the more I want this lens.

yup, this thread is a killer - it pushed me to sell my 35/2 for the 35L.

This thread is killing me too - want the 35L bad, want the 35L on a 5D even more!

There's not a lot on here that can't be done just as easily on a 24-70L, there's a specific look that can be achieved with the close focus disctance and the fast aperture. But very few people who own this lens seem to shoot in that range with it. If it's a lens that you need for a specific purpose then this is the only lens of it's type in the Canon range that can do this. But of it's just a general 35mm lens that you want, then there are many ways to achieve this. If it's because you really want a 35mm f1.4 L, well that's complely understandable too.

Great shots everyone

I have been looking at this lens for almost a year now, and it just appeared in my Amazon gold box for $1127 (along with the 135 f2L which I was also watching...... )

Maybe its a sign ....

Thanks it was a great trip even with a long 150 mile drive...

In and amongst taking some shots this van drove up and this tall blond with a scandinavian accent got out with a digital rebel 300D and started taking some pics. We talked about what a great scene it was and I said let me show you something. I took her camera, put my 35L and polarizer on it and snapped it onto my tripod. Switched it from "landscape" mode to AV, cranked the f stop to 16 and fired off a few shots. She was pretty excited and told me she couldnt wait to see the results. Maybe I created another convert.

Why is this lens out of stock just about everywhere you go??!! Is it being revamped? May be rebates have something to do with it?

This is the only lens I really want! If it is included in the rebates, I'll cave in, I know it. Somebody is going to get a sweet SIGMA 30 soon ...

:) I want this lens. With or without the rebate. I'll wait to see if Canon offers a rebate on it, though.

Its sold out everywhere because Canon just had a rebate on it not too long ago. People literally cleared out stock of it. A few places have it ... I just ordered it fro Calumet. They have 2 more copies left. Everyone I asked had no idea when they were getting more.

I've seen it in stock at B&H, Adorama and Calumet, but once they're in stock, they're gone really quick. I ordered one through Amazon.com a couple weeks ago. They are the same way, they get them in stock and they're gone in a day or two.
