Well I've been called shallow before but this lens wins a lot considering it's a wide angle, this is at 1.4 ISO 100
I think I'd better stop reading this forum, I don't think I would have ever thought to buy the 85L, 135L and now this 35L had it not been for these darn Archives where you all post such wonderful photos.
But then again, I no longer have the 16-35II, nice lens but I didn't use it, I think this will be more fun!

Thanks, this is one addictive lens, combined with the 135L and I was in heaven.
I noticed though with especially the 35L, even though it was on the 5D which I had taken the battery grip off, no one seemed to pay any attention to me taking pictures like they usually do with the more noticeable setup.
Another thing that I really enjoyed about these two lenses, usually I don't bother shooting on overcast days, but they are so sharp and have such sweet color that I'm going to work on this some more, with my other lenses as well.

That's one of the main reasons I want both of those lenses. Sunshine is usually more difficult for me in walk around situations. I figure the 35L and 135L would be awesome on cloudy days.

My Town, you know-the light was so dark grey, the skies telling me to stay inside. But I'm older, I must walk as much as I can, it comes with the accomplishment:-) This lens is simply luscious if you can keep the sky out of the shot, just luscious.

Oh I'm a sucker for cats and cat shot, I often "cat sit" for friends and usually manage to get some photos while in the process.
As a note to all POTN members, I would not complain one bit if when you bought a new lens, if you decided instead of "duck shots" you took cats shots instead LOL!

Maybe stupid questions, but does a CPL (= circular polarizer, am I right?) affect the great aperture of the 35L? Is it really helpful? Which is a good one (for this lens) and is it still possible to apply the lenscover?
BTW I use a B+W UV-filter (for lens protection).

A question: The date code on the one I recently bought is UW0906. What does it mean? How do you read that?
U is the plant, in this case Utsonmiya, Japan.
W is the year. "A" started in 1960 and recycled in 1985. So now W is 2008. The 09 is for September. And the 06 is some sort of random number. Here is a good explanation:
http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/eosfaq/DATECODE.HTM
So the lens was built in 'Utsonmiya, Sept 2008. That says that your lens is pretty fresh. Considering that this is October 08. Did you fly to Japan and pick it up yourself :D

I have had this lens for some time but not shared on this thread before. This cropped image was taken just a week ago at a launch cocktail of the brand Carl F Bucherer. It was taken in a crowded event hall with this model standing against a wall. I have discovered that at crowded events, one can only shoot with a short focal length lens as you have to fight for clear distance between the camera lens and model subject.
Shot at f1.4 - ISO 800 at 1/200 with flash to fill in.

Me and my lady up in northern Michigan wine country. Taken with a tripod and the self timer. I also had my 24-105 with me on this trip, which I though I would use most of the time (except indoors). But, I actually ended up using my 35L almost exclusively, and with wonderful results. Love this lens on my 5D.

Talking about the dark tip almost black tips of the leaves?
Also wanted to say there is some wide open with sever back light. Less than most lenses though. The best that I've shot with as far as controlling C/A in these kind of situations is the 200 2L. Theres virtually NONE with that lens.

This is the best way to use (IMHO) this lens to it's full potential. Mounted on a full frame @ f/1.4 with human subjects in front with a beautiful background, outdoors. Awesome shot!

Well hallelujah fellas!!
I've been waiting for a while for the day when I'm going to be able to post an image with my own 35L, AND THAT DAY IS TODAY!! As you can see I'm beyond excited. The image bellow is nothing special but it is the very first shot I took with my new lens so it is a celebratory image from me (f/2). The lens is everything I thought it would be and more. I come from 3 SIGMA 30s and one 28 1.8 and not only I don't regret my decision to get the 35L, I cannot believe I haven't done it earlier, it is simply spectacular. It is the only L lens I've ever wanted to get, now I have it. Woo hoo!

Jannie I think your 135mmL took better fan picture than your 35mmL no?
Jannie
3rd of November 2008 (Mon), 17:24
Well I think I got a more interesting shot with the 135mm but I don't hold the 35mm in second place to it. Mostly I was just standing there trying to hand hold the camera almost in the dark and see if I could get interesting shots; then I got this idea to try it with different lenses. It was a nice way to spend some time on an otherwise boring evening.
The photo above was at 1/15th of a second, not something I probably could have done with this lens or any other even just a month ago. Since I got more into primes, I've been practicing squeezing the button every night while shooting to improve my stability I love these non IS lenses so much and I think it's working. But I did take a whole lot of photos the other night to do this.
Last night when I tried out the 420ex speedlight I just bought, I shot some with each lens using the flash at 2 stops under for fill and because I'd read the preflash really helps the camera focus even in a completely dark room and you know what, they were telling the truth, all the photos came out looking sharper but did have that little glint reflection even at two stops under, and that was not as nice (I am not a fan of using a flash, I even feel like I've done something very bad to have bought one but I have wondered if this is simply more about stubbornness and could I learn to use it productively.
I would have had to get a ladder to get as close to the fan with the 35mm as the 135mm.
What I actually learned by looking through all of the photos taken with 4 different lenses is that I can rely on each one equally. I just happen to like these two lenses the most right now. But tomorrow that might change, I go back to the 85L being my favorite every now and then.
Sunday afternoon I went out with my two zooms, the 24-70L 2.8 and the 70-200L 2.8 and was using my 5D with the battery grip. By the end of about an hour and a half walk along the harbor I really was wondering why I was carrying all this heavy equipment. I really have become attracted to the smaller/lighter and very sharp primes (okay the 85L is a brick also and part of why it stays home more than the other primes if I'm just walkabout.

Ian, how's it going, buddy?! Thanks for the kind words. You know that feeling when you search for something and you're close but not quite and you keep looking for it? And then you finally find it and it fits you like a glove? That's the 35L for me. Thank you, the neat thing is that you can still get lots of bokeh stopped down a little more when using the extension tube, I've gotten so I set the manual focus to one end or the other, wrap my left hand around the lens (when in vertical format on the MKIII) so I can keep one finger pushing down on the preview button and then holding the camera with the right hand, I rock forward and back to get close focus while spinning the wheel by the shutter button to play with the different f stops until I see something I like. Then I simply rock back and forth the tiniest amount to get the focus where I want it, it's very unstable this close up but eventually I'm learning to get what I want with this method.
The above were shot on a MKIII with a 1.3 crop so the equivalent focal length actually is 45.5mm but I'll try to get out with my 5D with the same setup and see what I can get. I love the 35mm focal length for a lot of things, it's very versatile wide without stretching things too much, yes I like wider too but 35mm is my favorite wide, I sold my 16-35II to get this lens and I'm quite pleased with the switch.
I love closeups with a wide lens, it gives yet another perspective to something that's more often shot with a longer lens which stacks the perspective; I like that a lot too, I'm just trying different things.
I wish like heck someone made a shorter extension tube than the 12mm, I'd like to be able to have an extension tube around 18mm thick sometimes and sometimes just 6mm, or that I could get a Cannon 250D close up lens/filter to use with the wide angle but I don't know if the quality is as good, I think that lens/filter is discontinued and I've never played with that one so I don't know if it would be the right magnification.
Generally it is believed that close up lens/filters are of a degrading quality, but we used them shooting commercials all the time with 35mm motion picture cameras because we were always wanting to be able to use the zoom. We had them from 1/2 diopter all the way up to 3 but I hardly ever used anything more than the 1/2. Also I think Zeiss or Arriflex at one point made some exceptionally excellent diopter lenses/closeup/filters but I only got to use them once or twice.
I would just like to be able some days to stack something like a 6mm on a 12mm to find the right distance, often I have to crop a little which doesn't seem to hurt for what I'm doing.
