Oh, and by the way, those are extremely underexposed ducks at the bottom of the image. Mantra is to shoot ducks with a new lens. Doesn't say anywhere that they have to come out well in the image (had to crank down exposure to get the effect of the sunset)

It's the FL on a FF that suits my 'day job work' best as I'm usually in tight spaces. On 1.3x it's a 40 something FL which I like a lot but in those situations is slightly too long.
Also, for some reason, it (35L) does seem to look better on FF. That doesn't mean I prefer FF over 1.3x, for example my 85L is way better on 1.3x. I got the 24L to enable me to use the 1.3x in my work situations too :) 1.3x changes the DOF and FL a bit so widens the choice of tools to use. If I could only have one, I don't know which it would be but I'd take the 35L first every time :)

Hey guys, I've gotten some PM's regarding my post processing.
A basic sample of one of my actions. It works really well with slightly blown highlights (the creme replaces blown highlights a little). The 14 others have a lot more to them (textures, masking, etc)
I'll be releasing a full blown action pack on the cheap with awesome actions. The 14 others in the set have a lot more to them (textures, masking, etc) If you've ever liked my post - you can now get similar results. ;)

^ Ahh, bummer. Yeah, like I said - they're not a "huge" outfit like B&H. But on the stuff that they do have (which typically does cover a good variety of the common stuff) the prices are both better than B&H and the tax savings are good for us NYers.
I guess you can pick any place outside of NY if you just wanted to save tax. There are a couple of places that are pretty good. You just might have to wait an extra day or two.

Pat seriously. Anyway, I think i'm not too far off affording it. I reckon if I can find a good deal on a used 35L, selling my 17-40 + 50 1.4 might fund it? I rarely use the former and with a 35L i'd stop using the 50 so would be a good trade for me.

I know it didn't work for you but I reckon it would for me. I guess there's only one way to find out. Was tossing up between the 50 and the 85 as I hardly use the latter but it gives me alot more versatility keeping that lens.

I'm reconsidering the 35L now because of the Mark 3. I hated the focal length on full frame, but the hunt for a good 50mm is equally frustrating, and the 35L gives an excellent 45.5mm FOV on a 1.3x crop.
The holy trinity, after all, was christened on a 1D body .

Indeed. I find the 50 too restricting on the 5D so once I get the 1dmk3 I reckon i'll be swapping for a 24L! All whatever suits your shooting style though. How you finding the mk3? Amazing? Saw your review :)

The Mark 3 kicks some serious ass. In it, I have finally found another good reason to stick with Canon, the D700 was so tempting, but the 85L kept me here, and the MK3 is a new reason. First body I've ever used that I've liked better than the D700, and it is a MONSTER, the AF is just out of this world, makes my old MKIIN feel like a Rebel. Everything about that camera is well sorted, and people who are paranoid about it because of early AF issues have no idea what they're missing out on.
5D's still my favourite, but that's because my 5D and I are a team and I've used it for so long that it just feels like an extension of my hand. I'm so comfortable with that body, love it. Even if I were gonna go Nikon I would've kept the 5D + 85L combo I think.

The AF is the best out there. Best I've ever used, and IMO, hands down the best in the world. It smokes Nikon's system (and that's saying a LOT, Nikon's system kicks ass) and makes my old MKIIN's AF look like a child's toy.

I won't miss it either. It's a fantastic lens but for landscapes the 24-70 does the job. I've gone off UWA shots for landscape to be honest- 24mm is usually sufficient. The 50 1.4 becomes redundant when you have a 35L too!

 The AF is still really damn good on the MKII, but the MK3 is just a whole different class of camera. The 1D through to the 1DIIN (including the Ds models) were similar in design and functionality - the MK3 is redesigned from the ground up and is just wow.
So the MKII is still a magnificent body, and I wouldn't hesitate to shoot with one, but the MK3...the jump from the 1DIIN to the 1D3 feels like the jump from the original Rebel to the 40D, it wasn't an incremental upgrade, and not an evolutionary upgrade like the 5D -> 5DII, it was a quantum leap, truly revolution, not evolution.

nah not realy although I understand completely, I tried it but it was not subtle enough...It messed too much with the exposure on the bricks on top of the house.
I realy start to like the grad-filters in LR2, but I definitely have to invest in a Lee filter system.

The only environment I've been in recently is inside my house (or the damn office!) and the only portraits I have to offer are those of one of my 3 cats, Teri.
Teri, if you recall, was the one that almost left us May 2008 when she was diagnoised with Chronic Renal Failure.
Well, it's been 10 months and she's doing fine with daily ritual of medication and special diet food!
Oh, and she hasn't lost her "modeling" ways with the human (me!) with his stupid camera! The other 2 run like I was a dog or something, when I go at them with the camera!
Anyways, just getting reacquainted with a neglected lens that was collecting dust...believe it or not!

That's a great shot and perfectly describes what this lens does best on a FF DSLR: Wide angle (but not too wide) portraiture that puts the target (victim?) in their environment. Whilst minimising focal distortion, a 24L and 28/1.8 are too wide for this and a 50L is generally too long for this kind of shot.

Whilst minimising focal distortion, a 24L and 28/1.8 are too wide for this and a 50L is generally too long for this kind of shot.
What lens/focal lenght would suggest to do just that on a 1.6 crop sensor body?
I'm very impressed by the pictures I see on this thread and really like that type of photography: snapshot of a person in their environment. Candid or knowing you're shooting them.
The background blur this lens can produce further reinforce the "wow" factor. It only focuses on the main subject but we can still discern the surrounding environment.
I couldn't do this with my Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8. Maybe because I didn't try hard enough, or maybe it's because F/2.8 won't allow for this and I need to get too wide to keep everything within the frame. Am I doing it wrong or do I need another lens (a fast 20ish prime?) or is it a "Full Frame" thing only?
Thx.

Well, that's the problem with a 1.6x crop. It's awesome for it's longer reach....but it becomes a hinderence at the wide end. The 1.6x crop also has a relative effect on your DOF. It's a bit complicated to explain, but assuming two a3 prints, each with the seam effective angle of view (eg 85mm on full frame and 50mm on the cropper), the scene will have a simular composition and effective focal length, but there will be a DOF difference. The 1.6x crop will have effectively 1 and 1/3 more DOF than the comparision ff shot. So to get a 35mm f1.4 ff shot to look simular on a 1.6x you would need a 21mm f1 (or less)...which doesn't exist.
A quick round up of the effective differences between full frame and a 1.62x crop is
a) increased reach by 1.6x
b) increased iso noise by about a stop and 1/3 (ff is generally less noisy)
c) increased DOF by about the same stop and 1/3.
Now, the shot that Ralph took was taken at f2 (according to the Exif) so a 24mm shot wide open (f1.4) would come pretty close. The only problem is the 24L doesn't have the same smooth Bokeh that the 35L has.The 24IIL seems to look better but it's very expensive.
airfrogusmc
22nd of February 2009 (Sun), 09:38
Heres a shot with a 24L not the new one the bokeh aint to bad. And if you're careful you can get good results on FF. I would highly recommend the 24L for a crop.

I actually love the 35L on my 1DII...and I wouldn't want it to be any wider. Well, I think I'd like to have the option, but for my needs, a wider fast lens like the 35L wouldn't be worth having in the bag (due to the $$$) on full frame....but in the normal range like on the 1D II, it's perfect, and I use it a LOT. I love it. To each his own! There's a reason everyone has a different kit....different styles for everyone.

Thanks for the explanation Gareth!
I see I'll need to make some trades off if I want to take this kind of pictures. Full frame is out of my budget and so is the 24L mark 2. But I'll keep an eye on the second hand market for a 24L mark 1. That could work out for me.
