Hi,
I have heard of a few "hack" firmwares out there for my rebel XTi that claim to "unlock" some features that Canon wants unavailable to us. I honestly don't know where to get these nor do I promote them, just thought about asking the forum members since I have learned SO much here.
My question is about the safety aspect of these firmwares. How safe are these firmwares and are there instances of camera damage or distruction from using them?
Tell me about some of your experiences using these firmwares.

It's for the original Rebel, not the later Rebels.

Yep, that's the only hack I've ever heard of, and it was essentially because the firmware in the 300D was a crippled version of the 10D firmware.

Does anyone know where I can get an original 400D (XTi) firmware from?

You have it in your camera.
There are no firmware updates for Xti (according to Canon USA at least).

I realise that..but what if my firmware became "corrupt" and I wanted to re-install it (the original firmware).

In that case you’ll have to contact Canon tech support, I guess.
I have never heard of corrupted firmeware, it’s usually the update that fixes some of the original software flaws..

All I am after is the "original" 400D (XTi) firmware to download from somewhere. Somewhere must have it.

Firmware can get corrupted in a number of ways. The most common is that firmware for another device is loaded instead of the correct firmware. We see this in the phone business an many service providers dumb down our phones. For instance, turn off the ability to transfer pictures via a blue tooth link bypassing the carriers data network. But programmable roms can change state on its own. It's rare, but possible.

Okay, I guess I should correct myself: I have never heard of corrupted firmware in Canon EOS cameras.
Anyway, I have a feeling that we are trying to fix a nonexistent problem: there are no firmware updates for Rebel XTi at this point of time and the original firmware in anthonyl's camera has not been corrupted yet.

i am going out on a limb here, but what if anthonyl tried to update his firmware with the wrong one, and needs the original to replace the wrong one?

I wonder if its possible to dump the firmware from the camera, or to persuade Canon for it.

I think he wants to give a try at hacking it. ;-)

I think he wants to give a try at hacking it. ;-) The only two features that seemed locked away in the XTi is the shutter counter and maybe ISO3200 and spot metering. Outside of that, what else could be locked? But if someone would take the time and effort to unlock just the actuation counter, I'm sure many would rejoice.

2 or 3...? So confusing?!? ;-)...Seriously, I have no idea. But the way he insist to get the original firmware is probably to try at some reverse engineering.

ISO3200 would be cool...

I'd love ISO3200 and spot metering, if only Canon would provide us with an update and add those features I'd willingly pay for it!

It is possible to get a corrupt menu, mine has somehow become corrupt - I can't access half the menues such as auto, manual, and other important ones. I called Canon who confirmed the corrupt firmeware software and said it happens - but my warranty ran out and they want $300 to fix it which is BS since they also want to keep it for a minimum of 3 weeks to fix it. I could fix mine myself if I, too, could find the original firmware. I have the updated firmware of 1.1.1 which i got on their website and it does check your camera to make sure it's the right version. Thing is, I downloaded the update after mine was corrupted to see if it would fix the problem and it has not. So I also would like to get my hands on the original! I've been working with the only menues available to me, and though it's a pain in the butt, luckily I know how to shoot in any mode to get great photos, so its just frustrating, but doesn't prevent me from working! My main concern is that I'll have to try to fix this problem before selling the camera for my upgrade, because i'm not sure many people will want a camera with a corrupt firmware!

If you have downloaded and installed a later firmwae and you still have problems this would indicate another problem. Possibly the ROM chip itself has gone faulty and not addressing certain memory locations correctly. If the later firmware does not work I doubt the original will either.
