Pekka I greatly appreciate your willingness to share, but I'm trying to find the right solution for me. See......

How does EE2 compare with other applications like Gallery embeded in PostNuke or something else? I'm getting these for free from my host (there are many others to choose from too). I've installed EE1.5 and trying to work through my host issues to get everything working.

I am using EE2 for a while now. I like that it is realy fast. And very costumizable. And after using it for a while now, i think it must not be hard at all to intergrate it with other scripts. Or other scripts with EE2. Or etc....
I would say, why not trie for a while, and learn to use it. You would be in love (i think)

I perfer EE 1.5 and v2.0 to Gallery v2.0 because I found EE is faster to display the photos.
I never bother to install and try Postnuke because the interface seems old/worn to me.

I used PostNuke for a couple of years. It suited my needs at the time. I used the PN integrated version of Gallery for a while. Next used Coppermine which I liked, but my site got BADLY hacked due to an exploit in the Coppermine <-> PostNuke integration. Switched web hosts after continual runarounds from them.
Next I ported over PhotoPost (that was a LOT of programming work on my end) into PostNuke which worked out somewhat nicely. My web host's server got hacked there too, got the continual runaround yet again, so switched hosts again. I pretty much bailed on PostNuke a year ago after that hack. Plus PostNuke development has been stalled, moving like molasses for a while now.
I'm still searching for a decent photo-sharing/blog application. I seen some nice looking WordPress-based sites (www.williambert.com - I particularly like his layout). EE is an option as well as Gallery 2 (grown up a LOT from Gallery 1 days and has very active development going on). VBulletin-based forums are an option too. Another thing to look at is Joomla/Mambo.
I have 1000's of pix to post and want something to show them off easily. Of course a photo-sharing site is an option too - e.g. pbase.com or it's cousins.

I'm using Gallery2 now and have a seperate SMF site for a forum. There is a gallery plugin to SMF forum that isn't bad. The pro version of the plugin isn't free though. For a CMS I heard Joomla is the best and most developed now, but I haven't tried it in earnest yet. I'm also waiting for SMF 2 to come out which is supposed to be a big performance leap. After my initial launch of my Gallery2 site, I decided to completely redo it, but haven't had a chance yet, so it's been laying dormant.
I posted some good links here...

The biggest difference between Gallery and EE is that EE is more targeted to personal usage and EE has better search, much faster pages. I have also tried to make it have no limits on anything. I have always done all I can to make EE fast to browser and display photos, not have everything. To me EE is a bit like Apple and Gallery is like Microsoft :)
EE 2 of course has a lot of new stuff and if you have not tried it out please do. I am planning on adding a blog/page system to it.

I fully agree on this. Also used gallery, but I find EE2 more easy to handel once you've installed everything.

I've tried Gallery, Coppermine and EE and prefer EE out of all of them, but it really depends on your use.
Gallery is quick and simple to set up and use, and great for family and fun photos.
Coppermine is a pain in the backside to set up and their forums are very unfriendly, dismissive and bordering on abusive to anyone who asks a question they don't like. After much frustration with major hassles upgrading and the attitudes I ditched it. It's more technical though than Gallery in terms of photo detail (EXIF info basically), but tends to be use for family photos and porn sites (apparently ;)).
EE is as said more personal and more professional in appearance and functionality. I love the detail on cameras, lenses, settings used, etc. Sure Coppermine has the same information but it doesn't really interpret and display it very well. With EE one of the nicest things is to be able to easily see what shots you took with which lens and camera combinations. Support is great of course :D. Set up can be complicated, but despite that it always seems to work and the instructions are thorough. EE is also immensely configurable!
Aside from these though, I should also mention Flickr. Now okay it's an online service rather than an application you can run yourself, but I find Flickr is extremely powerful in many ways and if you want feedback on your photos it's great. Okay, it's perhaps just an ego boost but if you're learning it's very satisfying and does encourage you to go out and shoot more. Tying in with groups allows you to concentrate on interest areas too. Downside of Flickr is being so popular it's become a means of devaluing the stock photo market, and subject to photo theft. However I stick to lower resolution photos on Flickr for feedback purposes. Bigger photos on EE, although I still worry about photo theft and I'm not sure why I really need big photos on the net anyway.

I am very very satisfied with EE, the only thing that sometimes makes me uncomfortable is that EE is a strictly one person job.
Do not misunderstand: Pekka is doing a more than excellent job on developing, extending and supporting EE, and is more helpful than one could ever hope for to solve issues (where does he get the time from ;-) )?
Only if at one future point in time Pekka is not able to spend this much time in EE anymore it would become basically an unsupported product. This in itselves would not be a big problem as EE already gives me much more than I use and I can not think of any added functionality I am dying to have (apart, but unlikely to get it, from a EE plugin/intregation with the Nucleus weblog system I use). But possible future security issues is what does make me worry.
I fully respect Pekka's reasons for not making EE open source, but that does poses the risk above, while otherwise the community will take EE further.
I am partly fuelled by this because I used to use an excellent blogging PHP script that also was a one person job and where unfortunately not only the writer was not able to update functionality while keeping the package as a whole stable, I also had not the choice of not updating because the old version had a large security hole.
So I moved to Nucleus that was having slightly less options, but was at least supported by a large community.
Any thoughts on these issues?

I agree with what others have said, but I am concerned about the very long gaps between releases. The last release was 10 months ago.
Another concern is that the php code seems to extensively mix page presentation code along with application code. This is a bad practice and makes updates difficult. Perhaps this is contributing to the delays in updates.
