2.6kg. For motorsport I tend to use it with a monopod. I do hand hold it for other sports.

I was handholding mine at the weekend when I was getting some of the really low shots as my monopod didn't go low enough.

Great shots. I'm thinking of getting this lens in the summer (if it ever arrives in the Uk). A couple of questions for those who use this lens.
I've read a few reviews where owners have complained about the bag/case this lens comes with. What's wrong with it? No one seems to specify the problem.
Is this lens compatible with the Canon 1.4 + 2 extenders or just the Sigma ones? The prior examples look great with them.
Cheers for the help

Quick question there Cadwell...Do you not own the Canon 300 2.8 IS due to the fact that you own the Sigma 120-300 or is there another reason?
goatee
13th of July 2007 (Fri), 03:50
I wonder if it also helps that the Canon is twice the price of the Sigma, the optics are very close, and the Sigma has the added flexibility of being a zoom.
Cadwell
13th of July 2007 (Fri), 04:31
The price difference isn't a major consideration and IS doesn't matter to me. I find it interferes with my shooting style and I don't use it on the IS equipped long lenses I own such as the 100-400L and 600mm f/4L.
Everything in photography and lens choices is about compromises. The Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS USM is a stunningly good lens with superb optics and very fast AF. The Sigma loses out slightly in terms of optics and focus speed but only slightly. The Sigma's optics are excellent and the AF speed is still very fast - faster than any other zoom I own. For what I shoot I find the convenience of having the zoom capability outweighs the slight loss in IQ and focus speed.
If (God forbid) the Sigma failed on me I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

These are reasons that I am considering it over the Canon and even the Sigma prime.

Yup, me too.

13th of July 2007 (Fri), 08:56
From the pictures iv seen in this thread id say the slight decrease in IQ is negligible and the fact its half the price and a zoom more or less make it a no brainer (for me anyway). Guess it comes down to what you shoot etc as well though.

As you say, hard to lose with either. I tend to work with a long prime (500mm or 600mm) on one body and the 120-300mm on another. Under those circumstances having the zoom works better for me than two primes.
Ospi
25th of July 2007 (Wed), 07:26
Im now seriously contemplating this lens. After this weekend i really found the limitation of having a fixed focal length of 300mm on my prime to cause some issues and frustration. I dont use IS when i shoot motorsports anyway so that to me wouldnt be a loss and having f/2.8 over f/4 would allow me extra stop on the shutter as well for static shooting which would also make the loss of IS less of a problem.
Can get $1400 (AU) for my prime and then need another grand for the sigma but i think it would be worth it.

Does anyone of you have experience with shooting American Football (or a similar sport) from the sideline with this lens? Is the HSM fast enough in AF servo mode to be used at 2.8? I will mainly be shooting American Football with this lens and a fast auto focus is essential for me.

For those who own this, how is the af speed compared to a 300 f/4 prime or a 100-400L for those who own/have owned them? Its the only thing im really concerned about, everything else seems to be great, IQ, build quality etc.

I used to own the 300 f4 L IS and now own the 120-300 f2.8. I find the AF on the Sigma more accurate and extremely quick. To me, I hardly notice the difference using the 120-300 with a 1.4XTC, but AF and IQ do take a very noticable hit with a 2XTC. However, there are ways around this, so the 2XTC is still very usable, as long as you work within its' limitations.

Damnitt, im stuck between both sigma 300 zooms now. Both are more than up to the task and both seem to more or less outperform the prime overall. Now i need to decide if spending an extra $1600 aud is worth it for the f/2.8.
Decisions, decisions.

Ok so I want to add a question to this mix.
I am in the process of picking up the non-DG version.
I have heard that the Sigma 1.4 extender doesn't affect focus speed like the Canon does on the Canon Lenses?
Is this true or not?
Ross
Cadwell
17th of August 2007 (Fri), 01:58
Not true. Focus speed is decreased with he Sigma 1.4x extender regardless of Sigma's claims to the contrary. However, the 120-300mm AF speed is still fast enough with the 1.4x TC to shoot everything up to and including Formula 1 race cars.

Haven't tried my 120-300 with a non-Sigma TC but it works superbly with Sigmas' own. Having said that, i think i'm correct in saying that young Mr Harrison's pics (above) are with a Canon 1.4x TC so i doubt if there's much difference.

I found the Sigma 2x worked better with the lens than the Canon 2x... I don't know if you can extrapolate from that to the 1.4x though.

Ok well I have to ask several questions because I just got my non DG version and Im needing answers.
Have any of you had to send your version back to have it recalibrated at all? Why?
I have a 1.4 Canon convertor and Im wondering if I might have to get the Sigma version instead for this lens. It wouldn't be all that bad because I have a 200mm 1.8 that uses the convertor I have wonderfully.
How much PP do you have to do with your shots straight from the camera?
Im noticing some of the shots that are posted seem to be really over sharpened but others not so much. This question probably is in direct corolation to my first one.
Thanks,
Ross

Received this lens about a week and a half ago.
Very impressed with it's hockey images.
AF speed is second to none, keeps up with my 70-200 2.8L easily.
Honestly, I have been having one problem though. The end of the football season drops below 32 degrees here, not really too cold by my Minne-standards, but the lens cuts out focus, then works BEAUTIFULLY indoors.
Anyone else who has used this in a cold climate experience? My 70-200 2.8 works just fine in the cold.

I am having the Non-DG copy that I own sent back to me tomorrow from Sigma.
I had several pieces replaced in it to the tune of $620 so all I have to say is it better work!
I expect to be shooting Basketball and Hockey soon so I will try and have some test shots of it when I get it back.
Initially when I received this lens I was having some focusing issues and attributed it to user error. Well considering that the focus ring, focus cam and HSM motor needed to be replaced I think I can say this time it wasn't me.
I will have photos soon...

When I had my Non-DG fixed by Sigma for back-focus issues it came home in Great shape. It took a little while because they had to wait for some parts from Japan. I don't really know what was replaced but it seems like the entire lens assembly. By this I mean that Sigma service did a great job repairing my lens, so much so that it seems like a totally different lens (it's not;)). I wouldn't worry about their ability to get it right (the second time:oops:).
Your lens must have been out of warranty period?
Just curious, did you request a loaner while they had your lens in for repair?

A bit of both to be honest as it gets even heavier after a while.
I tend to use the 'pod to carry the camera & lens over my shoulder on a rally then switch between hand-held & pod mounted as required when i find a good spot.
