View Full Version : Is it time to buy the 100-400 from B & H now?

I 'think' I've finally decided on the 100-400 IS zoom over the 400 ƒ5.6. These forums have been a great help and I've learned that with either lens, you can get a 'good' one or you can get a 'great' one. Sometimes it's a matter of the luck of the draw. But, I also understand that some people have exchanged lenses that have not been up to snuff for a sharper one and then have been very happy with the lens (regardless of which one of the two it was). OK, here's the problem, or the question, as it were.

Last year, I received a nice bunch of 'milestone' birthday presents in the form of gift cards to B & H Photo. I can cover the rest to enable purchase of the lens. However, I understand that:

1-There is a major photo show in which Canon 'might' introduce a new version of the lens. Has the show taken place or is it about to? I've read nothing about a new lens yet.

and

2-I understand that the rebate (either from Canon or B & H [not certain]) will expire on the 19th of February. If this is true, does it mean that they just 'might' introduce a new lens after the rebate expires, as many companies aften do in an effort to reduce stock prior to introduction of new items?

If all this is true, do I wait to see if a new lens is introduced, and risk losing the rebate? Or, do I purchase it this Sunday?

Oh, does anyone know what the rebate code is?

Such problems! ; )

Thanks,
Rich

Well, if they introduce a new model, I would imagine it would have to be a sizeable step up from the current model. Thus, it will probably be a lot more expensive.

Case in point: The updated 70-200mm F/4 L IS. The regular old 70-200mm F/4 L costs between 500-600. The 70-200mm F/4 L IS costs over $1,000.

I doubt Canon would re-release the 100-400mm with gen3-4 IS (which if I remember correctly is what a lot of people were wanting) and not charge a premium for it.

If you want it, and you can afford it, get it. There will always be something just over the horizon. The 100-400mm takes amazing pictures, and that won't change.

I tend to agree with Chris. Even if they do release an updated 100-400 it will probably be with a price premium, plus it's not going to make the original any less of a lens.

Well said above. I got mine last January when I could negotiate better on the price.
I know this lens has been out for a while, but it was exactly what I needed, so I got it.
Go for it, you'll love it!
