...I have L fever..
I work for a newspaper, use all of my own equipment. I have enough to pay for one of these lenses.
35 f/1.4L
70-200 f/2.8L
24-70 f/2.8L
I want them all!
I am glad that I actually save up the cash before buying, rather than putting myself in debt with credit cards. Patience is tough
Currently using:
300 2.8 IS
85 1.8
Canon 1D
28-90 4-5.6 (yuck)
The 35 would be perfect for what I shoot on assignment at times, just simple photos of people, groups, and individuals. But the 70-200 would be perfect for sports, which I shoot alot also for the newspaper.

Do you really need 2.8? Why not the 70-200/4 IS or non-IS? Also a 17-40 might fill in some other gaps.

It seems you're eventually going to get all three, so I advise you to look at your photos determine the range of focal lenths you currently utilize the most, then get the lens that best matches your current shooting style.
Since you have the money for any one of those lenses, get what your heart desires and don't compromise.

If it's yuck, then I would choose the 24-70 2.8. Of course, that's if you often use that focal range.

I need the f/2.8 because I shoot alot of college sports, indoor and outdoor.

You already have a longer focal length (300 2.8 IS) and the 85 gives a nice prime to use in low light situations. So in my opinion I think the anser is obvious, all three!!! J/k
I vote for the 24-70 because you already have other stuff covered and could use an upgrade in this focal length.

I'd vote for the 35 or the 24-70. You have the 85 for the indoor sports and the 300 for the outdoor sports. Where you seem to be lacking is in instances where you need width and speed - press conferences and the like. If 2.8 is fast enough or you use flash, then go with the 24-70 for its FL flexibility; otherwise choose the 35.

if you are using a FF camera i cannot imagine doing PJ work without the 24-70L.
