This weeks theme is 28 mm. You can use a 28 mm prime or a zoom set to 28 mm. Doesn't matter which.

Rules are the same as always. Photos tkan from sunup friday to sundown sunday and posted by monday or when you have the time. Also remember the forum rules about size and number of photos.

Have fun.

I could not get closer for this shot so I had to crop the bottom.

5D + 28 mm f/1.8, ISO 100, f8, 1/200s

hi tommy.. i was just popping over to start the thread... thanks for starting it for me. I love the shot by the way... I really like the shot by the way.. what is that building?

tommykjensen

It is the castle Rosenborg. This is where the royal life guards reside. The building on the left is where the soldiers live.

Damn - I didn't know what this weekends theme was and was at an airshow all day yesterday (Saturday) so could have got a few...

That's a good picture, Tommy.

Here's my contribution - 28/1.8 shots on a 5D in some of the toughest lighting conditions I have worked in to date!

Chinese New Year Lion Dance for good luck and to ward off evil spirits (according to folklore). They light firecrackers, and the noise and sound show is supposed to scare the heck out of the nasties lurking around and keep the lion at bay until it can claim its reward.

Big bang as the fireworks go off!

Lions moving in

The red stuff all over the road is exploded fireworks. There were hundreds on each string and they set off quite a few strings.. now they sure know how to party ;)

Bit of motion blur, but these are f/1.8, 1/60 sec, ISO 3200. Can't ask for more.. I suppose you could go for a 50/1.2L but I don't think I will :)

Light: Cool shots of the Lunar New Year... I know those firecrackers, they are loud and the street ends up covered in red paper.

Tommy: Beautiful image, gotta love historical places and it is still in use!

Tommy: I always enjoy your shots of local scenes. They me see new things. I like the tree branch framing on this shot.

Lightstream: I'd love see such a celebration in person. Always looks so colorful and playful. So did the primes pass your test? Will you be keeping them or springing for the 17-55 EFS?

Kinda slow this weekend, eh?

Tommy, that is a beautiful shot of a beautiful building. Love it.

Happy CNY. :D Love your shots Yoda.

My 2 shots were both taken with the wide end of the Tamron 28-75

1st: a local cemetery.
2nd: the sky was a gorgeous blue yesterday.

Cat: Like your tree shot. And the cemetery: well, it struck me (a Pennsylvanian) as very strange to see a graveyard without grass! Low maintenance -- never needs mowing!

Here are my two. It was cold here this weekend, and I needed someplace warm to shoot. So I was reduced to shooting produce in a large farmers' market in the area.

I used the challenge to force myself to try to get a shallow DOF with the wide angle since I often use hyperfocal focusing with the wide angle. I think I need more practice, but still I was pleasantly surprised, and I think I'll use this technique again in the future.

Barbara, I really like the shot of the grapes. The DOF is great. Well done.

My cemetery shot is in an older section of an old cemetery. A couple years ago, portions of it actually got washed away during a huge storm we had. They are in the process of trying to restore it.
A lot of the headstones are made out of sandstone, and almost eroded completely away.

The newer side of that cemetery has grass and trees. You can see the trees in the background. (My tree shot is taken at the same cemetery) :)

joayne: yup, they sure are! I could hear them two blocks away as I was running towards Chinatown, afraid that I'd be missing out.. well, thankfully I didn't as the moment one string ends someone else starts theirs! :)

Barbara, nice grapes.. I love the seedless green ones. I like the way you've used the DOF to single out the green grapes amongst three colors and blur the background.

The primes are wonderful lenses in their own right and I think anybody who can find a use for them will not be disappointed, but I've discovered they are unsuitable for my run-and-gun PJ style shooting. Crowds and chaos at this kind of event don't lend themselves well to the primes.. my day shots were all done with the zooms, and it was so much better being able to zoom past the shoulders of the crowd. You want to go wide for an environmental view of the scene, then tight for the closeups, to be able to cut away the crowd when you can't physically barge in (sorta rude), and to be prepared when your subject suddenly pops up right in front of you.

I will be letting the 28/1.8 and 85/1.8 pair go, trading up to a 24-70/2.8. I know this won't help the shutter speeds any but next time I might not be so crazy as to shoot available light.. I'll pack a flash ;)

Cat, happy new year to you too :) Not sure if you celebrate but I think most of us can relate to the prosperity and happiness wishes.. may you receive both!! :)

Light, you will love the 24-70...everything except the weight! A very unique lens but gets great results!

Ah, yes, the 24-70. Great lens. I sold mine a couple of months ago. It was a good, sharp copy and I liked its image quality. But the weight was too much for me. I had trouble getting handheld shots without camera shake. Hope yours works out well for you.

And thanks, Cat & Light, for commenting on the grapes.

Just placed my order. :)

If you liked the focal length and can live with one stop difference, you might want to try the 24-105. That lens is absolutely superb.. midrange weight (33% lighter), but fully stabilized up to 3 stops and quality is dead on par with the 24-70. I currently have this lens but am adding the 24-70 for low light, indoor and flash work where the 24-105 doesn't do so well. For landscapes, including low light (with stabilizer), the 24-105 is untouchable.. anything that calls for IS and the expanded range such as outdoor events.

I am used to working with the bigger rigs such as the 3-pound++ tele's, so the 24-70 should be manageable. That having been said I am not willing to give up my 24-105/4 though! :)

Funny you should mention the 24-105. That's what I have now. I got it about nine months ago. When I realized that it's been glued to my camera while the 24-70 gathered cobwebs, I decided to sell the 24-70. Now I lust after the 17-55 2.8 EFS to get some extra width but keep the IS and gain f2.8. Maybe I should wait 'til after PMA to see if the price drops on it.

It looks like it unless there are some late entries.

I think so too... as much as I tried there wasn't time or weather to get any shooting done.. I felt completely uncomfortable bringing the kit out with any of my family around this weekend so it got left tucked away..

This would have been a good exercise for me. I don't have the eye (yet) to look at a scene and tell what portion of it would fall inside the frame at 28mm. Or 50mm. Or 200mm. I'd like to be able to do that. Or, at least, get close.

Something easy?

Maybe another scavenger (sp?) hunt since they were always popular before and might get a few more participants. Since we are limited to 2 images per post, maybe we could list 3, 4 or 5 subjects, and then let people select any two.

Or, we could try a color again.

Just some thoughts. I'm open to anything anyone might want to suggest.

Beth.. take more photos :) come back and review the EXIF for every image you shoot. You could probably even force yourself to guess and look, and see if you guessed right. Over time, you'll become good at working it out.

Also, it helps if you apply the focal length conversions, so then you will be able to relate it to other things you're reading. 28mm on a reduced-size-sensor camera is a 'normal' lens, very close to what a 50mm would look like on full frame. Yet most 28-on-crop users think it is 'wide' because literature refers to it as being wide.

It's wide, yes, but only on FF ;)

Barbara.. sounds good!

I was thinking scavenger hunt too. And didn't we allow more than two shots for those challenges?

Beth.. take more photos :)

Always good advice Kevin! :D And good point about the crop/ff differences. Guess I'll just have to practice with my 5D.

Sorry I'm late -- well, not really. I'm on vacation and not checking in often. This one, however, I had the perfect entry for. . .

Well, if we're having a scavenger hunt, I guess we better come up with some things to scavenge. Here are 2 suggestions:

1. The grocery store (inside or outside) closest to your home (might not be the one at which you shop)

2. Something out of place (e.g., an orange in a bin of apples)

Hopefully, someone else can suggest other/better subjects.

Wow, ibdb! Got any colorful sunset shots hanging around? Enjoy you vacation.

You took the shot but you set your zoom slightly off? That's OK, feel free to show us :)

Sometimes it's not always easy to nail the exact numbers on the zoom.. 2mm is close enough.

ibdb....nice colors, I love a good sunset!

My local grocer would frown upon me taking pics in his establishment.

I love the idea of a scavenger hunt tho! Perhaps somethign broad like inside, outside, up and down?

Here's a thought for this weekend... now, anyone feel free to tell me i'm nuts. But, what if we did a Re-do theme... we look back on the previous threads over the last year and if there's a theme that we either missed, or wanted to do better we do. just tell eachother what it is we want another shot at..?...
