Hello everyone...
I have been trying with varying degrees of succes to get a clear subject shot while having the background out of focus. It seems that the traditional 35mm approach does not yield the same effect. Anyone have a decent workaround or any tips?
Edit:
Im using a Canon Powershot a70

The portrait mode is supposed to give minimum DOF. However, digital cameras ingeneral have wider DOF than film cameras because of the small size of the CCD and the short lens focal lengths. The best way to get differential focus is using software that layers the image. Make a soft focus layer and overleaf the forground in it.

Try to change the camera mode to Av (Aperture Priority) and set the F stop to F8.0. Move your camera nearer to your subject instead of zoom it into telephoto! You shold get some background blur effect.
Happy Trying!

Depth of field increases as distance to subject, angle of view, and/or aperture value increase. To have the back ground out of focus, use telephoto mode (zoom in), get close, and use as wide open aperture as you can (depending on lighting.)
Have fun.

There is also a portrait mode which uses wide aperature to narrow depth of field (according to the manual).
