I'm first.. In all honesty I'll go anywhere with the exception of Seattle and Portland I really haven't explored that part of the country too much so just about all the options would be a new experience for me.. and i'm planning to make it a much deserved/needed long weekend.. the Gig harbor sounds like it would have the most variation in things to shoot so i'm leaning towards that one..

Hi everyone, a meet somewhere near Seattle would be great, please put me on the list. NW trek sounds like a good choice. Gig Harbor would be nice for a change of place I live in Seattle and I never run out of Photo opportunities here.

Seattle is a good choice for a "few hours" while awaiting the ferry to go to Bremerton. The Seattle water front shots from the ferry are great. Good photos available in Bremerton and Port Orchard while heading down to Gig Harbor.
Basing out of Seattle may be the easiest for all and there are so many good photo oportunities in the surounding areas what ever direction you decide to go.
I posted here last summer and invited anyone who wanted to go out on South Puget Sound, the Narrows Bridge South to let me know... No takers. Summer is my boating and photo time in a little 18 ft open bow that hold 4 comfortable. Weather dependant of corse...
Please keep me posted on the progress of this NW meet. I would enjoy learning from others.

Seattle is a great "starting" place while waiting for the ferry to Bremerton get the Seattle Waterfront shots. Once in Bremerton one could photo the navy ships if so inclined and then head off to Port Orchard and to Gig Harbor.
I do have a small 18 ft open bow boat that fits 4 nicely and would love to take more experienced photograhers out for a tour of South Sound. I have a lot to learn. This would be from the Narrows Bridge South, weather permitting of corse. Oh the 2nd Narrows bridge opens in July 07..

So, I have a thought.. what if we had a two day event. Started on Saturday in Seattle and then spent sunday day at the NW trek.. I think that it would add a lot of diversity to our shots. Those that are stronger in nature/animal photography can give the urbanites (me) some badly needed pointers and vice versa... as far as meeting places go I think downtown would be the smartest.. somewhere that we can park our vehicles and not worry about them.. or maybe meet up and then take one or two cars to wherever else we want to go..

My wife and I are going to head up on Friday and stay at a bed and breakfast in Gig Harbor. We'll take the ferry over on Saturday morning and meet up with the group in Seattle. We could all meet at one place on Saturday AM and perhaps some Seattle locals could recommend a meeting place and an itinerary for the day.

I live like 5 minutes from downtown Seattle, just off I-90. Theres a church (Mercer Island Presbytarian) thats a block away and doubles as a park and ride. We could meet there or atleast for those that want to carpool in (limited parking in Seattle, most is metered 2 hour max or you pay for all day in a lot). The P&R is free, and you could even take a direct bus in if you're cool with that, if not atleast we can conserve vehicles and its safe and free.
Any particular ideas?
you have downtown
water front
alki
gas works
lake union
space needle/science center
industrial
pioneer square
green lake
kerry park
UW/University area
SPU/Freemont
hmmmm, theres more too.

...like Pike Place Market, Chinatown (not as exciting as some, but has its possibilites, too)...
I guess it kind of depends on what people are looking to see. Broad cityscapes/evening lights would probably be best from Alki and/or Kerry Park (though both also work during the day, too). Gasworks can provide some of that, too.
Best all purpose/multipurpose urban areas would probably be around Pioneer Square (reasonable walk to one end of the waterfront and to Chinatown), or Pike Place Market (reasonable walk to the other end of the waterfront). If the monorail is running again (I can't remember  ) it's easy to tie Seattle Center (Space Needle area) to Westlake and part of downtown.
I know that I'm talking to people from the general area here, but I'm not sure how familiar people are with Seattle, so I'm not sure how much of what I'm suggesting is new.
I know that "Seattle - urban" was a target area, but like Corey says, there are a lot of possibilities within the area to choose from.

I loved Pioneer Square, the space needle atleast around it was interesting.. but shooting from it a bit on the limiting side, If I remember correctly I couldn't get a clean shot because of glass and bars... the downtown and chinatown area was really interesting, chinatown was a bit on the gritty side but had personality.. the Pikes market and waterfront with all of the street performers and vendors was probably my favorite.. not to mention those guys that throw the fish around..

Apparently, we've got two different threads going on here, covering the same trip.
Here's the thing... Seattle is HUGE! I mean, it's a city. There are things to do all over that place. It would probably take us weeks to go see everything, and shoot everything that we wanted. Personally, I'd like to take in Pike's... get some cheese at Beecher's, some coffee at Starbucks, pick up some fresh produce, gawk at the buskers. But then, I might want to venture to the Underground. Or over to the Needle. Thing is, most people would want to do a variation of things. Some wouldn't want to do Pike's, too touristy, and not enough grit for the urban shooter. Some might want to go to the Aquarium at the waterfront, or, well, whatever.
Something to consider would be to have different places to meet at different times. As in, perhaps, start out on Saturday at the Brass Pig at Pike Place. Meet and Greet. From there, break up into smaller groups... if some want to go over to the Needle for some shots, car pool on over. If some want to stay around Pike's, great. Then, later in the day, say, around three or so, we could all meet up again for a late lunch, or all meet up at the Underground for one altogether trip.
We could spend some time "chimping" each other's shots, do the Underground thing, then go to dinner.
This way, we can all capture the city in ways that we like, and still meet up with each other for one big shoot.
If we go, Lisa and I will be doing Saturday at Seattle, then, on Sunday, going over to NW Trek to say hi to the animals (hopefully with some you) before taking off for home.
Just my 2 cents worth.

puddlepirate44 is right, there is so much to see within 50 miles of Seattle. What are the dates for this meet?
Mark_Cohran
28th of February 2007 (Wed), 23:25
The meet dates are the 31st the 1st (March/April). I think, based on the poll, is to meet in Seattle on the 31s (the Ferry Pier sounds like a good location if someone can suggest a specific landmark that would be great). Those that wish to do NW Trek on Sunday could then do so - but the poll results indicate Seattle Urban is the primary choice.

If the plan is to meet and greet, then split into groups and head to particular areas to shoot based on preference, maybe someone who spends more time in Seattle than I do can think of someplace where free/really cheap parking would be available. There's a reasonable amount of free on street parking available up at Kerry Park, but I would think that there's got to be somewhere else closer.
I liked the idea of meeting at the Pig in the Market, or somewhere similar, but parking for anyone who was going to head elsewhere to shoot could be a bit of a pain.

if you aren't from the city this won't make any sense, but in the stadium area going east along the train tracks, bus only area, and before you get to I-90, theres free parking along the street and is usually open (except on game days). I think you get to via 4th.
You can pay ~$10 to park at lot by the stadiums and king street train station, quick to get to and safe.
Or carpool from my city, Mercer Island, or even take the bus in. Downtown Seattle is just a 3 mile bridge away, free parking, as safe a town as there is in the country.

I hope that you and your bride can make it -- that sounds a lot like what I'd pick. I have a fair amount of experience with both Starbucks and eating at Beecher's. :D From the Market it's really easy (as long as you don't mind a few stairs ;) ) to walk to the waterfront.
...And if some of the areas around the Market aren't gritty enough for some people, I guess I don't know what gritty is. Well, I do live near Tacoma, which is perpetually described in the press as a "gritty little town," but I don't think that's quite what you mean.

If people are going to meet at the Pike Place Market there is a parking lot behind the Market with an $7 early bird rate for all day(in before 9:30 am). It is easy to branch out around town from here by bus or walking. Kerry Park would be nice to meet back up for sunset there is usually ample parking around the park.

Pepperoni told me about this thread. These trips sound like a lot of fun... unfortunately for me I had shoulder surgery a few weeks ago and I'm pretty much out of commission for awhile. Except for shooting things on my dining room table in my new light box that pepperoni motivated me to build.
