California?? It's not even 2:00 PM there. You could fill a few gig cards by dark!

I guess cute furry animals will *have* to do. :)

Good luck on the shoot. I'm quite jealous.

Objektiv? Was meinst du das? :p

Anyways, how pray tell do you guys carry this thing around damn it, its so heavy especially with the 2X TC added, my arm is hurting, and my fingers too since I am holding it via the tripod hook. Any tips on how to carry this thing around. Don't know if I even want to look at that 100-400mm now, that thing is even heavier.

Ferdinand

 Good job you didn't go for the Sigma 120-300mm then. It's nearly twice as heavy

Congratulations on your new toys :D

Ferdinand, didn't I tell you to get yourself a dumbbell so that you could get into tip-top shape for lugging that lens around?

Anyway, the 100-400 is a tad lighter but only by about .1 or so pound! :D

A good neck strap like the OP Tech Pro will help. Scottes is working on the S&M belt and I have started a wee experiment of my own. Will keep you posted.

Ian will the camera mount and 2X TC be able to withstand the weight of the 70-200mm hanging off your neck, assuming I have real great neck! I am so worry that the mount might get damage, so I am carrying it like cradling a rifle right now :)

Ferdinand.

I've found that a good strap - as Ian said - makes a WORLD of difference. A soft-on-the-neck strap which stretches a bit will relieve your neck of most of the bounce of walking. Holding it ready-to-go relieves another half, and your down to a quarter. Or something like that.

After one morning with a good strap I realized that it was one of the best $20 items I've purchased.

Besides, when a duck comes swooping in, and your eye is pressed to the camera, your elbows are up and tucked, and your finger is wound like a finely crafted spring ready to unleash once that perfect shot comes in... well, the camera doesn't weigh anything at all.

PS to Ian: SMB, not S&M. SMB is for cameras - S&M is for Gitzo.

But that still doesn't answer my question if the lens mount on the camera will be ruin over time hanging a lens like that of it. Just being newbie with his first L is all

Whenever I carry the camera with the 100-400 or the 70-200 mounted, I always cradle the lens in my left hand. I never let the lens and camera dangle around my neck. When I'm walking long distances and my biceps get tired, I'll carry the lens (with the camera still strapped around my neck) the way waiters carry a trayful of food close to their shoulder. :)

CDS how about roast DUCK with GARLIC?

PacAce thanks I will give your carrying technique a try. Now I know its bad idea to clean the lens body with a wet towel, so how about towel with alcohol? :D

I kinda hold it up a bit with both hands - the strap carries about half the weight, my hands the rest. Left hand under the focus ring, ready to push-pull and pre-focus, and carrying most of the weight. Right hand is in position and carrying a little bit of weight.

When I need both hands I let the camera dangle, all weight being carried by the neck strap. That's not for long, and no sudden shakes or bumps or anything. The mount can handle it.

If I'm out with my 50mm or something lighter it gets held away from my body a bit (to stop the bouncing) but almost all of the weight is on the neck strap.

Thanks guys.

Next question, these questions are coming to be as I spend more and more time with it :D Now the lens case that comes with it, I found it a bit to be impractical. Are you guys using it at all? Do you put your lens in there and then into your backpack? Or do you just leave it back home?

Ferdinand

I used it once, when I didn't want to bring my small bag, and I quickly wished that I had just brought my small bag (for other reasons, too). I'll probably never use it again, unless I travel with it maybe and use it for packing.

The 2-lane stretch of road between US 101 and Casa de Fruita is known as 'Blood Alley.' There's something about that stretch of road that causes people to do strange things. Please be careful.

I've often thought that the San Luis Reservoir would be a great please to have a camera. Let us know how it goes for you. I drive past that point a couple times a month on average. In fact, I was there about a week ago.

Testing of DDG Harness System for Photographic Transportastion of Long Heavy Lenses. (I gotta find a shorter name. Cost a fortune to print up header cards)
This rig really works.
Take one LowePro Deluxe waist belt. Add either the LowePro Shoulder Harness or Top Loader Shoulder harness.
Using the TopLoader chest harness-
Clip the back set of clips to the D rings on the sides of the belt.
Front set of clips (on adjustable straps) clip to O ring either on camera body or on web extensions of and existing strap. This works really well. Takes all the load off your neck and places it across the shoulders. No problem with 10D+BiGED+70-200IS+1.4TC. I have to find a couple of thin pads to put on the straps that go over the shoulders. Camera can disconnect fast and is held very steady.
Not the rig you would want to use taking photos of the family BBQ but this morning I used it for a 30 minute tramp chasing deer and it felt great.
All parts can be seen here.
