Well... it does look sharp here, but it is not a 100% crop shot, so I'm not 100% convinced it is that sharp.

I don't understand that comment. It looks sharp, why not just accept that it is? Why do you need to be "100% convinced"?

Or am I missing something?:confused:

I am really tempted to get this lens since I have not been happy with any of the 2 canon lenses I have tried so far one was the 17-40 and the toher 15-85. Neither one was worth it for the price. Seems like this lens is the favorite. My only issue is if I should spend the 600 extra on the IS version. I like to take some lower light shots like after sunset and you get all the color in the sky. I can manage it fine with my kit lens with IS. I have determined that the slowest shutter speed I can shoot my kit lens without IS is 1/125th which I guess may be normal for most. Some say they can get just as sharp pics as low as 1/40th but I cant. I want to do landscape photos and some wildlife maybe with it. I also want a good lens I can do rolling shots of friends cars and I know you need to be in the 1/60 and lower shutter to get that motion blurr but have the car in focus. Some I know use non IS wide lenses like tokina 11-16 and can do it but I have no idea how in a moving car with all that motion.

Yes, what I am trying to say is even though that racing horse shot looks sharp in this forum, but the photo has been shrunk down in size, thus it looks sharp in this forum. I would prefer to see that shot in its original 100% size, then any softness or noise will be more obvious.

Most photos posted in forum are shrunk down in size, in this way even photos from a 3-megapixel camera phone will look sharp too.

Don't feel lonely Ricardo, I must be missing the same thing you are!! We view images on the forum at the posted size, we certainly don't view them at 100%, so who actually cares about exactly how sharp it is at 100% - except maybe the OP if he wants to print out large prints?

I posted the images as an example capture from this lens and wished to share it, afterall this is the sample archive. It was another member who thought it was sharp - I think so too but never claimed 100% - what really is in digital <rehtorical>.

I don't see any contributions from efoo using this lens within this thread... he could start his own separate thread to discuss 100% sharp requirements and maybe post some examples for constructive review by peers.

Why dont you just look at the full size version on his flickr page? I did and it still looks really good. There is some noise in the shadows of the horse's hair in the area around his winky, but not much.

I just picked one of these lenses up and I am really hoping not to be unhappy with the cost vs performance. My T2i is not a FF body of course so I know it will not give the upmost IQ possible. I wanted a really great zoom lens, and hope this is going to fit the bill.

Of course I care about 100% crop quality. You can call me another pixel peeper if you want. If I don't worry about IQ in 100% crop, then the cheap 55-250mm IS kit lens is good enough for IQ in reduced size photos too.

Yes the reason you don't see me contribute to this thread is because I don't own this lens myself. I am interested in buying one that's why I am researching the examples posted. Nice shots you got there btw.

Thanks mate, just checked out ncsa's Flickr site and pixel peeped that racing horse shot in 100% size (like 18MP?). Particularly looking at the focus points, i.e. part of the jockey's clothing and the text "Nicolaris" on the horse strap. They do look sharp. I'm convinced, thanks :)

Btw, although the IS version is a bit pricy compared to the regular 70-200, I think the IS is really useful at those focal lengths.

Handheld too, 1/200 and f4 at 260mm (with converter). :D All I had down there with me was my Gorilla Pod, and there was no practical place to set it up for the shot - gotta love IS.

Thats Why im wanting to find someone to trade me I know the awesomeness of Canons 70-200 and had a taste of the IS when i rented the 70-200 f2.8IS mkII!!!! so Im really set on this lens now I just have to find someone to trade me Lens for body :)

I just got this lens and so far this is the best I could get. I have had issues with the AF on my T2i I think. It ihas trouble getting a proper focus. Tried many different settings. This was done in MF. Since I got this camera I have had a heck of a time focusing with the viewfinder since it is so small and dark.

I think that the only bad thing I've read about it is that with most bodies, you lose the autofocus with the 2x combined with f4, because it doubles the maximum aperture to f8, and that's not enough light transmission for most bodies to focus.

If you really need 400mm you may be better off buying a prime like the EF 400mm f5.6 L USM.

Nice! I still think I'll stick with my 1.4x II so that the AF still works. I struggle enough just tracking the bird and keeping the focus point on it in AI Servo.

When I have to do too many things at once, the whole project crashes. I'm more than willing to admit that I can be a bit of a klutz at times. ;)

I think I would always be a bit disappointed with results using the 2x...I see that in Kel's lovely raptor shot above he has had to use a lot of sharpening...I presume that's what created the halo edge, and a fair bit of detail has been lost elsewhere....it's a great capture, but I think the 2x might have softened it a bit.

Thanks guys! I still enjoy using the 70-200+2x TC, even though i have the 300L(and with 1.4x TC for 420 f/5.6). It's light, versatile, and..IMO, sharper than the 300 +1.4x! :)

70-200 f2.8L IS II might have stole this lens's thunder in terms of total IQ but it's my favorite lens to take with me for hikes -- I can carry this lens all day without feeling the strain.

I would have liked to use a hue/WB which would give it a rustic look instead of going completely B&W.
Also I am trying to picture it in my mind to have been shot from farther off with an alley leading upto it through the foliage and something else like a broken mailbox / wooden barricades etc in the frame... there is just too much foliage for my liking.

Attomsk: It will be years before they update this lens.. it has, basically, no weaknesses...and was only released in 2006

^^Oh yes it is worth it ! After I sold the non-IS to buy the IS, my keeper rate skyrocketed ! And the IS version is sharper. Plus the weight difference is negligible.

I researched both F/4 versions of this lens. F/2.8 was out of question due to budget and heavy weight. I initially got this lens without IS, but soon realized IS is a must for me, so went ahead and ordered IS version. Though my IS lens is only 2 months old, I love it. It takes amazing pictures.

Without a doubt the sharpest lens I have ever used. Sharper than the 200L IS and 135L I recently sold.

So as i said above, i went and processed these, Nothing really fantastic, i just wanted to use my 70-200 f/4L IS a bit.... These were taken at the local Smokey Bones, which I will not be returning to (Because, among many other reasons, the manager took personal offense to my taking pictures with my camera, when there were a bunch of other folks using cell phone cameras, and was rude disrespectful and condescending to my mother when my mom got mad over them billing the order completely wrong)

On the plus side, the 70-200 f/4L IS handles low light quite well, and the bokeh is very lovely in my opinion :)

The IS really had a workout, a lot of those are at 1/6 or so... Ok im not at 200 or anything, but still...

Im really happy with the colors and how the bokeh looks in those images even if i admit the images themselves arent terribly "compelling"

This lens was amazing at the Capitals game this Monday. These were taken from box seats (thanks work!) @ center ice and most of the pictures turned out great. F/4 ended up being plenty fast I was able to shoot most pics at 1/200 to 1/320 which did a decent job of stopping motion. A few of these are heavily cropped

Nice shots Attomsk! I shoot my girlfriend's boy's hockey(16+19), in a small local arena.. with the 70-200 f/4IS-60D and up to ISO 1600(very occasionally even 2000-2500). Even the so-so lights in there give me 1/500-1/800(although.. we're in the "warm room" [g/f is a wuss, and always cold ;) ] -at ice level, behind one net). Does well.

BTW....Attomsk and Adam Jones... GO LEAFS GO !!! :p :D
