I've never had a 2.8 IS version that was this sharp at f/4 - Images below have absolutely no PP:

If you're not used to a long lens, then make sure your shutter speed is well above 1/400. Make sure your IS is on, mode 1. Most of all, make sure you're shooting in SERVO for those sports. I shouldn't need to ask, but you are shooting center point focus, right? (or at least not "let my camera chose my focal point for me" mode)

OH.. "IS" off for sport btw.

The pictures all look sharp to me, but almost everything looks sharp with 800 pixels on the long side.

I don't know if anyone has said this yet, but in many of your images I do see some front focus. I see a bit on your 70-200 shots as well - now, that may be because you're not shooting in servo, but if you were.. then that means I've seen front focus on your 17-55 and 70-200. May be time to get your body checked.

Yes all with the 70-200 F4 IS! I LOVE it! :D I'm thinking of getting the 1.4x converter as I've heard it gives super results and doesn't really degrade image quality much. That'll get me up to 280mm

Thanks David. No, I've never really seen much difference with the 1.4x on. The 2.0x makes a difference though, as well as losing the AF.

I keep drooling over this lens, however I have the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS and it's really really hard to justify buying another lens with the same range. I noticed a few of you have used this lens too... will I notice a HUGE difference? And will I miss the 200-300mm? I guess I could solve this with the 1.4x though.

I do have to admit, I'm not super happy with the 70-300. It's okay, just not "wow". Love some opinions.

Take a look through your photos and see how many you took in this range. As you said, a 1.4tc would solve this problem. I've not used the 70-300 but images from this lens do have a certain "pop" to them that my other lenses don't have.

Hey bosscat you still going to get the 300 2.8 just wondering.Sean .L:D

Thats the plan, cause alot of the places I shoot snowcross have ugly backgrounds, and this lens will help alleviate that, plus sometimes I can't get the right look with the 70-200 or 24-70 as I can with a longer reach.

May even add the 400mm 5.6 to the arsenal, just for yet a different look and the extra reach.

Whatever helps me "Shoot to Thrill" is what I'll get

man the sharpness of the pictures that I'm seeing is remarkable. Are these straight from the camera if so what Picture Style are you shooting in? Tripod? Handheld? IS on or off? Any Post Processing for the sharpness?

Unfortunately I don't own this lens yet (hopefully very soon) but I haven't received the clarity/sharpness that most people show on their images on anything that I've shot.

I've got the sharpness slider on my 40D set two notches up from standard, and after scaling the photos down in Photoshop I apply a 100% 0.3 pixel unsharp mask before uploading them to the web.

Processing aside, this is a phenominally sharp lens!! Here is a sample taken in RAW and converted to JPEG in DPP:

I shoot Standard Picture Style jpegs w/ sharpness bumped from the normal 3 to 4. That's all I do with this lens, and it produces great shots. All of my pictures have been handheld with IS on. The nicest thing about this len is the colors and just woderful contrast in all the pics.

Hi Sean,
you are welcome to view my gallery at: http://flickr.com/photos/dvdbum
I live in the Kathmandu valley, and we do get to see the mountains on good days. It's been pretty hazy these past few weeks. There are some beautiful places where we can view the mountains from the outskirts of the valley. Hoping the weekend will bring some clear weather.

On my 400D, I have my sharpness set to 4 as well. What I noticed was I do a lot less PP in Photoshop after I got this lens. :)

On a scary note, just a few days after I got this lens (brand new), my autofocus stopped working !! It just went dead. Manual focus worked. Tried my 28-105mm lens on the camera - and that one worked fine. Nearly had a heart attack since we don't have a Canon service center here in Nepal. And I'd spent my almost-3-month's salary (which I'd taken on advance!!) on this baby. Cleaned the lens contact points, that didn't help. I then rotated the focus ring with my hand --- kept rotating left and right for a couple of minutes and cleaned the contact points again. And THAT worked !! whew !! hasn't troubled me since - fingers crossed.

I could've exchanged it - but it was the last piece in the shop I bought it from - and the cheapest price (gray market) I could find. It cost me a little less than US$ 1,000. The shopkeeper said the new ones which will be arriving soon, will cost around $1200. (The main reason I took an advance from my salary and bought the last piece). And with the Dollar rates going up, I couldn't afford to buy it later.

Seeing the results from this lens what makes it all worthwhile :)

Not had my 70-200 f4 IS that long, and haven't had much chance to try it out .
This was shot on a 40d, the light was a little lower than I would have liked so the shutter speed wasnt quite high enough (bluetits move incredibly fast!), but the high speed burst mode made up for it. Not quite up to the quality of most peoples' pics in here, but its a start!

Well obviously you lose a few stops over the faster F2.8 version of this lens, but that is significantly heavier. With the 40D you can get away with ISO 1600 with relatively little noise creeping in ... I guess it depends how particular you are about noise, and how dark the churches are which you shoot in ;)

Put simply, the F2.8 version will be better in low-light conditions, but you have to decide whether that advantage (together with the shallower depth of field when wide-open) outweighs the disadvantages of higher cost and higher weight.

Cheers :)

I know I can do better than this, but here are some 100% crops for pixel peepers. The 1st I was blown away I could read the speedo. The 2nd is a "wow IS is awesome". I actually had a hard time with AF in this light. The "33" sticker is the only place it would lock on for me (I know I should use manual, just testing the limits).

It was a lot of money, but its going to be worth it. Is it cheating if you're in love with your new lens?

I have read lots of posts stating that the 70-200mm f/4L IS lens is very soft at 200mm and the closest focus. I have not used this lens close-up because I hve a macro lens for that purpose. Awesome shots! Damn helicopters!

actually I didn't mind much as it's part of the game really. Plus they're so easy to clone out anyway in the sky like that. It's just a PITA when they get between you and the boat. I just wish I had the money to rent one for something like this.

Did you forget to rotate the polarizer for the last one? Or take it off?

I don't use a polarizer... I'll be getting one soon because of these shots though, I'd like bluer skies w/o PPing them in and I'm thinking it's help with that, but I'm not sure what it'll do to the water reflections (ie will cutting down the reflections look good or not?). But the last one was shot much more INTO the sun than the others as the boats moved away from where I was shooting. Check the angle of the sun/shadows.

symby
24th of June 2008 (Tue), 14:26
Ah well I thought you had one on from the look of the previous shots. I haven't tried mine yet on the water so I'm not sure how much of an effect it will have. It should definitely be able to tone down the reflections, whether or not that gives you the effect you want I can't be certain until you try one. :)

Really? The autofocus works? I thought one had to use manual focus if a lens' widest aperture was greater F5.6 on a crop-body camera (10/20/30/40D)? (70-200 F4 + 2X TC = 140-400 F8)

Yes u'r right! but this tc has 8 pins instead of 11 and doesn't report itself to the camera..
When adding the Tc exact lens aperture doesn't change. All photos are wide open @f4.
But 'effective aperture' changes and there's still loss of 2 stops light:(
