over the weekend i got to pick up my birthday present. I picked 70-200 f4L IS. i haven't found a duck yet. This thing flew by while walking home. It was a ways away, but here it is. I missed on the exposure, bright outside, very overcast. i made it lighter in dpp. no sharpening added. The bird made a u turn right in front of us and headed back to san diego. Second image is 100% crop. Maybe i should keep this lens.

Roy Mathers
20th of July 2008 (Sun), 05:15
How do you get an aperture of f/5 with two stacked converters?

atx880
20th of July 2008 (Sun), 06:22
Tcons have 8 pins instead of 11 and they are invisible to the camera.
Yes it's sharp but not that much without some sharpening

Roy Mathers
20th of July 2008 (Sun), 07:08
What I meant was - the 1.4x loses 1 stop and the 2x loses 2 stops. This is from an f/4 lens - so how do you finish up with f/5?

atx880
20th of July 2008 (Sun), 07:51
Yes actually i lose 3 stops but it doesn't effect the exact aperture of lens(physically no change on lens aperture as they are invisible) but effective aperture is still 3 stops down due to the light loss.
So i just stopped down the aperture from f/4 to f/5.

Roy Mathers
20th of July 2008 (Sun), 07:57
So, although the exif shows f/5, the actual effective aperture is about F/16? Is the depth of field what it would have been at f/5?

atx880
20th of July 2008 (Sun), 09:22
Yes, effective aperture is about F/16 which is equal to 3 stop loss and no change in DOF.

I also tested this lens with a friend's 2X Canon teleconverter and got these shots:

http://www.pbase.com/hogster/image/101105090/original.jpg
(400mm)

http://www.pbase.com/hogster/image/101106421/original.jpg
(378mm)

http://www.pbase.com/hogster/image/101106414/original.jpg
(400mm)

http://www.pbase.com/hogster/image/101106415/original.jpg
(381mm)

It definitely softens the images, and having to manually focus is a bit of a pain, but the images are still better than upscaling a shot at 200mm I reckon. :) I would be interested to have a go with the 1.4X, I've heard very good things about that (not reducing the quality and preserving AF).

great photos!

How are you guys throwing the background out like that? I didn't have much of that on my 40D for the short time I had mine. Perhaps I was using it wrong. Are you using it fairly close up (does it have a decent minimum focus distance)? I was mostly using mine to get candids of my kids from a distance which I suppose would not give me that shallow DoF...

Thanks for the compliment! That’s exactly what the guy in the helicopter said when I gave him a 13x19 print of this photo. I panned it at 192mm at f10 and 1/100 with +1.3 exposure compensation from the ground as it moved overhead. I am always amazed at how sharp the 70-200 f4 IS is for a zoom lens.

well i've taken pics in those modes and there is something in focus in them all...not necessarily what i wanted in focus, but i have no way to tell where it is focusing w/o the dots haha

like obv. to a certain extent i can tell because the lens does shift like it's focusing and things become clearer, but yesterday i was taking pics of a bee and the flower was in focus in most and not the bee because i didnt know where it was focused

Canon 50mm f/1.8
Canon 24-70 mm f2.8 EF L USM
Canon 70-200 mm f4 EF L IS USM

The idea is to cover all the posible ranges by the use of these three lenses.. all posible suggestion are usefull... thanks

From my first session with the 70-200 F4 L IS..Handheld..Probably would have been better if I had focused a millimeter downwards..Still I am amazed with the lens, its sharp as an eagles eye at all apertures and all distances!

Hmm, maybe I am expecting too much. In the 100% crop shots of the squirrel and the giraffe, I thought the eye and fur of the squirrel and the fur of the giraffe appear a bit soft and blurry. I guess these are considered as very sharp photos by everyone right? No other lenses (not even the prime lenses) can get any sharper than these photos right? Damn me, I must be pixel-peeping too much :P

Edited: Interesting in the squirrel's eye , you can see the reflection of emre2006 and the fences behind him. Nice :D

I was at f/4 (wide open) and the giraffe was pretty close to me. The DOF was quite shallow. I believe I was focused on the eye, so due to the angle of the head the nose was in front of the focus point.

If I had been at f/8 it would have all been sharp.

efoo, it feels to me like you have some kind of agenda going where you want to disprove sharpness claims regarding this lens.

I didn't claim anything about the photo I put up, certainly not anything like you said "No other lenses (not even the prime lenses) can get any sharper than these photos right?".

There are plenty of other photos here showing the sharpness, and they are borne out by the detailed measurements published at

No, I'm not trying to disapprove this lens, it's just I have very high expectation of this lens. Photozone gave it a stellar review and others claim it is probably the sharpest zoom lens currently in the market. Hope you are not offended in anyway. Cheers.

yeah, sharpest zoom lens does not mean perfectly sharp... Realize digital cameras have AA filters in them that intentionally blur images a bit to avoid moirre... Pick you evil. Check 5D and 1D (the original) images to see somewhat sharper shots from specific lenses as they have the weakest AA filters in canon DSLRs. Also, if you really want sharp shots, consider paying to have you AA filer removed.

Oh, and stop pixel peeping so much. For 100% crops, those shots ARE very sharp as in a real world print you'd never been looking at anything that close, and typically people show 100% crops in lens threads w/o and sharpening put back into the images. So you can make them better, and this lens is certainly better than most, especially most zooms.

Pixel peeping is OK when trying to decide between a few lenses, but once you've bought something, use the damn thing and don't worry about it unless you're seeing issues in prints.

I'm really interested in bying 3 diferent lenses for my canon 350d, and i would really like to get some recomendations about. I allready have a Canon 18-55mm and a Sigma 24-70 mm f2.8 DG EX Macro, but my idea is to replace this two by a:

Canon 50mm f/1.8
Canon 24-70 mm f2.8 EF L USM
Canon 70-200 mm f4 EF L IS USM

The idea is to cover all the posible ranges by the use of these three lenses.. all posible suggestion are usefull... thanks

I think the Canon 50mm 1.4 or Sigma 30mm 1.4 are a far better choice than the 50mm 1.8.

This is off-topic, so please forgive the violation. I've been playing around with image correction in Lab mode, and found the above image a good candidate. There isn't anything wrong with it, and I love the mood it evokes, but I was curious as to how much detail it retained, and how far it could be pushed close to 'normalcy'. This is what I got:

Received the lens yesterday. Shot a bunch of tests to see that copy was a good one... it is! I shot this image at f/4.0 @ 165mm wanting the front end in focus and no distractions in the background. I PP for maximum black and chrome effect to make it look "bad."

This lens is my first L Series and I could not be more pleased...:D
