I answered the first question a few posts back. It should be pretty easy to look up that specification.
It's a GREAT lens, for pretty much anyone. The IS should help you alot as beginners often times have trouble with telephoto lenses due to camera shake. I have no problems getting SHARP photos at 1/60s @200mm :)
I wouldn't want this to be my only lens though. It would pair up very nicely with the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS.
can anyone tell me what is the maximum magnification is?...
and iz it a good lens for a beginer with an xsi?

Nice shot, but 1/200s is a piece of cake. I have a tack sharp shot (of a squirrel) shot at 1/60s (handheld of course!) that I printed at 12x18". The IS is really remarkable (as are the optics in general)

Nice shot, but 1/200s is a piece of cake. For you, perhaps. For me, anything less than FL x 1.6 is a miracle! I am gonna love this lens...

Shot some test images today with the Tamron-F 1.4x TC. In the burst shots focus was spot and held focus for all the shots. I am a true novice in this area of long lens shooting and fully understand the need to adjust shutter speed, aperture and ISO to get a clear sharp image when handheld. I just recently got the lens and the 50D and I am impressed with the quality of this lens and the images it has produced.
No cropping... all full frame. CS3 PP
The first is a single shot from a burst of 9, A1 Servo, @ 200mm (448mm equivalent), handheld, IS0400, 1/250 @ f/4.
http://nevadajack.zenfolio.com/img/v4/p953134575.jpg
This shot was moving very slowly but I detect camera movement. Same EXIF but 1/125 @ f/4 which is probably the reason for the movement.
http://nevadajack.zenfolio.com/img/v4/p569959582-4.jpg
This shot at the same specs but was shot at 1/250 @ F/4.

like i was telling a fellow the other day i also have a 300L f4 IS which is a fine lens. i believe the 70-200L f4 IS nips it in IQ tho and the difference becomes obvious once you add a 1.4 TC.

This is sharp! Wish mine is this sharp at f4!
Bear in mind that this is not straight out of the camera. Very rare is anything sharp shot in RAW format on my 40D. Everything requires a bit of post processing. I adjusted WB, Exposure, etc in Adobe Camera Raw. I then used a plugin called contrast master and the unsharp mask filter after saving the file as a jpeg.
Try a few of these hints and you will be amazed!

We reviewed the venerable flagship Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM a couple of weeks ago with favorable but slightly reserved recommendation due to price and weight factors. This week, I bring you a review of it’s smaller and lighter cousin, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM.
Specs first…
From Canon
The EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is a lightweight, compact L Series telephoto zoom lens with Image Stabilizer. The optical Image Stabilization in the new EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens provides up to an incredible four stops of shake correction-a first for Canon IS lenses. The use of fluorite UD lens elements provides excellent optical performance in terms of resolution and contrast. These features, together with its water-and dust-proof construction, provide both the performance and portability to meet user demands.
Specifications
Lens
Focal Length & Maximum Aperture 70 - 200mm f/4
Lens Construction 20 elements in 15 groups
Diagonal Angle of View 34°- 12°(with full-frame cameras)
Focus Adjustment AF with full-time manual
Closest Focusing Distance 3.94 ft. / 1.2m
Zoom System 7-group helical zoom (rotational angle: 72ΒΊ)
Filter Size 67mm
Max. Diameter x Length, Weight 3.0 x 6.8 in. / 76 x 172mm
26.8 oz./760g (lens only)
The Canon EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM belongs to a group of 70-200mm telephoto pro lenses that Canon offers. The range starts with the affordable yet sharp EF 70-200 f/4L USM, then it steps up to a stabilized version, the EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM, followed by a non-IS, f/2.8 version, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM, then the upper echelon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, reviewed previously.

I got myself this lens for Christmas. Am loving this first L of mine. 200mm is so useful in picking out singular subjects from any vantage point. Am still struggling how to use the 70mm end though. IS is amazing! Was able to take sharp handheld shots at 200mm at 1/20th!

Went into buy the 100-400mm f/4 IS today. Took many pictures of various lenses and ended up purchasing the 70-200mm f/4 IS. The sharpness difference was evident upon inspection of similar shots at 200mm. In all shots the 70-200mm f/4 out performed the 100-400mm lens in IQ. Obviously I loose the reach that 400mm provides but I'll deal with that at a later date in time. For now the 70-200mm will do. My camera is a 50D.

Grab a 1.4x converter for some extra reach.

I prefer the tighter crop, but is it me or is there something up with the bokeh? Or did you use a high ISO?

I also noted the bokeh. The lighter circular ones are the sky which was very bright. I shot this at f/4 using ISO 100 at 70mm. I was about 10 feet from the leaf. The limbs of the tree have a great deal of chromatic aberration which I did not reduce or process. I expected more of a "blur" shooting at f/4. Guess I should have gone back much further and tried using the 200mm end.

Im pretty new to the world of DSLRS, but am looking at getting either this lens, or the 70-200 f2.8 (non is), and am wanting some advice on which one would be more suited to portraits, and also some landscape-outdoor shots. Both are around the same price, and the weight isnt really a problem, just the price of the 2.8IS is out of my league.
Thanks in advance
Matt

They are both well-suited to portraits--at 200mm, the difference in DOF is pretty minimal.
If you need the extra stop for freezing action or shooting in low light, than go for the f/2.8... the IS in the f/4 is great, though, and it's widely regarded as one of Canon's sharpest zooms.

some take with the 40D, the light was not very good so I shoot at 800 ISO at f4. I have the chance to be with this family of moose; thye mother and the twins, while she are eating, the young turn around... me. they become very too familiar, at a certain point I stop the encounter for my security. One of the calf come so close I can only catch a part of the face at 70mm.

Everyone keeps saying that the 85L is best on a FF camera, what about this lens? Since it's a telezoom I would imagine you'd get more out of it on a crop camera but do prove me wrong :)
It depends on what you're after. If you're after 'reach', then yes it's better on a crop. However many people (myself included) find the 70-200 range strange on a crop camera. Personally an ideal medium telephoto for crop would be something like 50-150.

I use this lens on a FF camera and i like it very much. It becomes more versatile for portraits in my opinion.

Wait a minute, Canon makes an IS AND non-IS version of the f/4 70-200? I don't see IS versions anywhere except for the 2.8
