Wait a minute, Canon makes an IS AND non-IS version of the f/4 70-200? I don't see IS versions anywhere except for the 2.8
Correct - there are four versions. Has been for awhile. The f/4 IS is the LATEST of the group. The f/4 non-IS version has been around for ages now.

When I shot Pentax, I was bemoaning that there were NO high-end 70-200s available. When I switched, I was like "WHAT? I have to decide between SIX 70-200s????"
(The four Canon Ls, and then the Tamron and Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8s....)
It's good to have choices!

Yes, yes I did :)
I totally love the "light weight" of the f/4 IS. I have the 100-400 and I've played with the 70-200 f/2.8 in the store, and they are ALOT heavier than the f/4 IS. For the type of shooting I use the 70-200 for, the light weight is invaluable (I'm a short wimpy guy!) I have no problems with bokeh/shallow DOF at f/4 and I'm always using a flash indoors, and if I can't use a flash I have my 85mm prime :)
I see you made the correct choice ;)

IS on any lens will decrease battery life and it isn't as loud as some other lenses. My 300f/4L IS is louder.

I too have found the 70mm end on a 1.6x crop body to be just a little too tight in various situations. Although the "perceived" reach on the long end with the crop factor is really nice!

Well I switched from the f4 IS to 2.8 IS thinking faster is better, but I really didn't need 2.8 for what I shoot. Since I didn't use 2.8 all that much, and I didn't like the added weight, I switched back.

Unless you NEED the 2.8 speed, skip it. The 4 IS is lighter, and sharper (:p to the 2.8ers) and I love this lens.
That's a bit of a crop as well. This lens is SO spot on, no calibration shot on a 40D so no AF micro adjust.
200mm is limiting, for skittish birds, but feeder or a lucky shot like this or my owl, and it's just pure beauty. Beyond sharpness, the colours, and overall optics are superb.

I've had a 70-200 f/4 IS for about 18 months now. It is a superb lens in every respect. But today I purchased a 2.8 IS version. At the present I have both lens'.
From my initial observation, the 2.8 is significantly heavier, on paper, the specs don't sound like much, but in reality it is very noticeable. Sharpness wise, it's difficult to tell them apart, both wide open. Image quality is very similar, but I do prefer the wider aperture for better background blur.
Price wise, well I'd stick with the f/4 IS of course, unless you need the speed. As for which one I am going to keep, umm, I don't know! Both at the moment I think!

I probably wouldn't NEED it that often since I don't take portraits, indoor sports, etc that the f2.8 is neccesary for. I do take indoor stills and low light outdoor shots on occasion which is why I'm so undecided. I do have the 17-55 f2.8 to cover some of that though. Actually I've used the f4 indoors with extremely good results. I'm also going to Alaska later this summer and thought that the f2.8 might be more useful. Great owl capture...I've yet to see one in the wild so I'm jealous!

I owned the 70-200 2.8, 70-200 2.8 IS, and the 70-200 4 IS all at the same time
I set each of them up to take the same picture with the same settings with controlled lighting. All wide open. My two 2.8's were near identical in sharpness/contrast. My 4 IS was noticeably sharper. Even when I stopped the 2.8's down to f/4 they weren't as sharp as the 70-200 f/4 IS.
For what I shoot, and with a better IS system on the f/4 I sold the 2.8's and kept the f/4 IS. Very happy with it.
For your reference, shot on a crop body.

I'm pretty sure that I'd be kicking myself if I dumped my f4...just can't bring myself to do it. I took a picture of a small object on the fireplace in my living room with the curtains drawn with just existing daylight at 200mm and was just amazed at the results.

The IS is phenomenal on this lens. I'd much rather have better IS than one more stop of light. So long as I'm not shooting action subjects, it's much easier to under-expose for the extra stop than to loose better IS.
The size, weight & 4-stop IS is what sold me on this lens compared to it's bigger brother.
The numbers pretty much speak for themselves!
F4.0 IS 26.8 oz(760g) vs
F2.8 IS 51.9 oz(1470g)

How good is this lens for macro? I am thinking of selline my sigma 105 mm f2.8 macro lens to buy canon 70-200mm f.4 IS L, but sometimes would still like to take some macro shots...

It's probably not an ideal lens for macro - it doesn't magnify much and there are softness issues when you're at minimum focus distance.
If you want cheap macro, get a 50mm f/1.8 and kenko tubes.

just get 1 of this Canon EF 28-300мм f/3.5-5.6 L IS USM, and it serve all the range, does it work this way?

I got these shots just messing around with my 70-200 f4L IS and some $20 extension tubes. The tubes have no electronics which is why the DOF is so shallow (I took these before I knew you had to set the aperture on the lens hold the DOF preview and remove the lens). I think results with Kenko tubes could probably be pretty good (better than mine anyway).

I'd advice against. Buy a Sigma 50mm Macro for $200 used and get shots that will knock your britches off.

Taken at 200mm, ISO160, f8, 1/500 with minimal PP.

Is this the "IS" version?
Yes, and it helps a lot at times; I have shakey hands. But this was shot at ISO 640 in daylight, 1/1000 of a sec., so it might not have made a difference here. Still, I love having IS.

Wow. I guess I had been hanging out at the wrong place... the NON-IS thread, and somebody just called me on it .
Are there any more specific sub-sections I should know about... like 70-200 f/4L IS USM with serial numbers beginning with UW? ;)
Anyway, I took a bunch of hummer photos this past weekend, and this lense works pretty well up close and personal:

I have never used the f/2.8 and thought for many weeks on whether or not I should get it or the f/4. Well I settled on the f/4 and have never had any regrets. However I don't shoot indoors with it, where the f/2.8 is probably a better choice.

On a crop camera, I think the 70-200 is really a bit too long for most types of indoor shooting unless your at an event or venue like a wedding or sports complex.
The only times I've wished I had the f2.8 version is when using TC's. It would be nice to be able to use a 2x TC and still keep AF, but in that case, I've decided the EF 200 f2.8 prime is a much better choice as it's significantly lighter, a prime, and about 1/2 the price of the 70-200 f2.8 IS.
The better option though is just picking up a 300 or 400mm prime as I see using a TC on the 70-200 as purely an economical consideration for those who don't have one of the longer primes yet.

I would guess, especially with the IS version, most of the shots that were done in any type of daylight were probably shot hand-held.
Before I picked up the 70-200, I really thought I'd be using it on a tripod more, but in actuality, I can probably count on one hand how many times I've used support, and even then, it probably wasn't needed due to the excellent performance of IS.

Top image was ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/640 at 200mm
Second was ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/200 at 189mm. Damn, the shutter speed is slow for the second one..such a nice sunny day too. Damn water.

Yes but ducks move. IS helps with static subjects.
+1
The IS helps with camera movement (as in shakey hands), not subject movement. Maybe bump your ISO up to 200 or more when shooting moving critters, which will increase your shutter speed.
cLin
19th of March 2009 (Thu), 00:03
That thing people say that your shutter speed should be 1/focal length...do I need to take into account my crop factor? And why that specific number? Does it freeze the action/subject enough?
Example, if I shot at 100mm using a 20D, would my minimum shutter speed need to be 1/(100*1.6) to get sharp results?
braidkid
19th of March 2009 (Thu), 00:28
^ Yes, that's just a general rule, but IS gives you a bit more leeway for a slower shutter speed. You can shoot as slow as 1/30 at 200mm with IS ON.
Markitos
19th of March 2009 (Thu), 06:28
Yes but ducks move. IS helps with static subjects.
I realize this--it was more of a general comment, not thinking of the two photos he had posted. However, ducks do not walk so fast that a 1/200th (or certainly 1/640th) shutter speed should be too slow to stop movement.
My two thoughts--you focused on the duck with one shot, then the duck moved and you didn't refocus, or 1/200th was too slow for the duck (not likely).

Mine's finally ordered..!!
Oh yeah.., oh yeah..!! Uhh.., uhhh..!!
It may take two weeks to arrive because of Passover (Adorama). But anticipation can be sweet too..!!
I was actually looking for a faster lens for future event photography, but images here, and the reputation this lens has convinced me. I think with the 4-stop IS, high ISO capabilities of my 5D2, and flash, I should be alright. Besides, I bought the lens for today, right now.., not future.!! I want to enjoy it now, not someday..!
With my 200 2.8L II gone, this should fill the void just fine. Plus, I like its versatility. I felt confined with 200 2.8L II, albeit it was a great lens.

I can't really post any of my indoor stuff (most of it's for clients) but you will be fine with the f/4 and a flash. You'll actually be better off than me as I have crop bodies so your high ISO can kick my high ISO's rear end
As for the IS, if I am shooting indoors and not using flash, I'm usually fine with around 1/60s (provided the subjects aren't moving of course) but since you have the 5DII, crank that ISO up to 6400 and go nuts!

My camera is mainly used for taking photos of the kids, the F4 IS does this job well. It is perfect for snaps in the garden or park. Here is one of my favourites.
