Woah denli21, I live on the south shore of Montreal and never saw this kind of scene... where was that?
Very nice pic btw.

why did I even take a look in this thread in the first place!?
Now considering this lens over the 55-250 EF-S... but can't believe how this thing is damn expensive!! -.-

On my way home today, I saw the clouds pushing away and knew the light would be great in about 15 minutes...so I waited...and waited....and then it came. Stormclouds in the back, bright late afternoon sunshine for light = beautiful light for photos. Surprisingly little done in postprocessing...just a little bit of curves work and that's about it.

We are those all wide open (f5.6)

Does this refer to my pictures? Well, two reasons actually. First: it was extremely windy and I forgot to take the tripod ring. So slow shutter speeds - even on a tripod - were not going to cut it. Second: I had very little time and place to setup my equipment, so it was shot without tripod at all. :)

Take it. I did not attract too much attention. I have a technique that I use for street. I frame up something on the ground and use my peripheral vision to watch my subject and wait for the right moment. Some times I am staring at a wad of gum or something for 3 or 4 minutes until my subject stops watching me, or gets into the position that I want. (You can feel stupid as others watch.) Re-frame quickly and take your shot(s) and then walk away.

Sometimes whipping out the big white lens will draw attention. People watch to see what you are about to photograph (some times your intended subject is distracted too). Frame up a plastic cup or some garbage on the street for a minute or two and everyone looses interest in you very quickly. Opportunity returns.

Bottom line. I think folks see the lens and figure you are a pro or something really interesting is about to happen. They loose any interest in you very quickly if you are low-key.

In fact, the guy on the left (shot of three guys posted just above) was watching me until just a second or two before I got the shot for which I was looking. I just framed up something across the street, a lamp post or something, until he turned back around.

You will attract attention with it on the street. Quite some people were saying 'man, that's one serious camera!' and move away :)
Question is if you care? If you'll take the 85L you'll won't be noticed that quickly, but you'll won't have the same reach.
It's NYC, so you won't be the only one on the streets with a white lens on his camera.

I also feel bad leaving the 85L behind. But then again: if one lens could make me leave it behind, it is the 70-200 F4 IS. ;-)

Funny, I just defected the other way, got my f4IS today, definately LOVE it, sharper than any zoom I've owned (and, I've pretty much owned em all) Seems lighter than my brick and super fast focus, it's...well,......Brilliant.
Was thinking it might be lacking in the "bokeh" area compared to the 2.8.....at 200mm with the circular blades it creates a rich creamy background, so far I have zero complaints

Okay folks.

I have had this lens for some time, and as you all know it is incredible! I have made it my walk around lens over my 17-55mm I love it that much. My question however is this. What is it like on FF?

I just purchased a 1ds mark II and did so almost entirely for the FF image. I will be shooting a lot of portrait type photography, and a shallow depth of field is very important to me(It's basically the only reason I went FF). How many of you have this lens on a FF body, and what is it like compared to the f2.8 version? I am planning on trading this for the regular 70-200 f2.8, but I am having trouble parting with this lens. I love it so much.

I know the 70-200 f2.8 is magical on FF, but does the f4 have the same pop that the f2.8 does when used on FF?

Thanks,
David

I have it on my 5d and its super sharp but i have some vignetting problems.

I pulled this from a review i found

Vignetting is rather well controlled but Full Frame body (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/Field-of-View-Crop-Factor.aspx) users will notice darker corners beyond 135mm at f/4. The f/4 IS lens appears to have slightly less vignetting than the f/4 non-IS lens.

I have that problem, i picked up a 2.8L IS because i needed that extra stop and haven't had time to take it out the box yet.

Also an excellent portrait lens. Examples taken with the 50d, first at 160mm, ISO200, f4, 1/60 (IS works excellent). The second taken at 121mm, ISO200, f4, 1/125.

2nd day with the lens, took it out at lunch, this is a really great lens These are straight from the camera, converted from RAW to JPEG in DPP, with my usual settings. The cool thing about it is that it doesn't need to be stopped down to get the super sharp images....It starts out sharp and only improves slightly up until about f8....
Love the Bokeh too

Ok, I know I am in the minority here.

I bought this new a month ago, falling for its renowned sharpness. Took some test shots, but I just wasn't very impressed with it. The AF was noisier than I'd like. The focal length proved to be useless for me, as I rarely shoot over 100mm. I know, I should have known. But, really, I wanted to love the lens; just didn't happen.

And, the white color didn't do anything to help either. It was a major turn-off, in fact.

So, long story short, I ended up selling it. I am replacing it with another legend, 135L.

I hope to have different results with it.

single_track
7th of May 2009 (Thu), 19:10
^ Interesting that you found the AF too noisy. Mine is almost silent. I suspect we have different expectations, or you were hearing the IS which is a little louder. I love the 70-200 range on my FF more than my crop.

Either way, too bad it wasn't a good fit. You should love the 135L, but if you rarely shoot over 100mm, is the 135 a great choice over an 85 or something shorter?

p360
7th of May 2009 (Thu), 19:23
I am sorry, I meant IS.

Not AF - AF was very quiet.

As far as 135L, I will try to love it. I do shoot a lot of portraits of my two boys. And I like shooting candids. 135mm will provide me the distance for it.

Plus, I have a couple of weddings lined up to shoot. Hopefully, many more in the future. 135L would be God-send for that purpose as well.

Markitos

I have both the 135L and the 70-200 f/4L IS, and for me they serve different purposes. I prefer the IQ/bokeh/size/weight of the 135L, but there are times when I need the flexibility and extra range of the zoom. In some of the places I shoot, foot zooming is impossible because of various obstacles.

I find that the two lenses are comparably sharp, but that the 135L appears sharper sometimes because of the way it renders the OOF areas.

You said you rarely shoot above 100mm, why the 135L?

It sounds like he likes to buy lenses based on reputation rather then if it's a good fit for him then tries to talk himself into loving them...this rarely works.

I am buying this, albeit reluctantly, thinking I should be able to get good use out of it in weddings. I also shoot portraits of my two boys; the bokeh should be wonderful.
And I like shooting street candids.

Again, as I said somewhere, I am hoping to fall in love with this lens (when I do get it, of course. It's currently showing out of stock at J & R).

Not true. That's just speculation on your part.

I admit, I have contemplated buying this lens for the longest time. I didn't buy it before because I was shooting with a 30D as my main body. I've heard and seen how wonderful this lens is on a FF. And now that I have one, I've finally decided to try it.

If it doesn't work out, I can always sell it. Like that hasn't happened with anyone..!!

I heard nothing but good words for the 135L. I am lushing also for this lens except I think it is too close to my 100mm and maybe too long for my crop body right now.

If you need 2.8 then yes, but it's heavier and the IS isn't 4 stops. Some say the 4IS is sharper, I don't know, mine seems to be, but not by much, both are very very nice.

Haven't used this lens much for portraits, but I think I might have to start doing so. Shooting at f/4 on full frame still yields relatively shallow DOF, and is a good aperture for getting most facial features in focus, but still knocking out the background well enough. Plus, it helps that this lens is as sharp as the best primes in the world, even wide open. Honestly, this lens still blows my mind even after a year and a half of ownership. It is SO good.

From the Memorial Tournament practice rounds on Tuesday: The direct sun made for very difficult light, especially when the guys wore white. Nearly every shot exceeded the native dynamic range of a JPEG file (luckily I didn't shoot JPEG)...I had to pull highlights AND push shadows from RAW on nearly every shot to get the contrast to fit in the JPEG space. Thank goodness for RAW!

Anyway, here they are...all on the 1Ds II except the first:

It should be fine....I used mine on my first engagement shoot last summer and it worked great. You can still get a nice amount of background blur at 200mm and f/4.

does anyone use this lens for paid portait photography? I am umming and arring over this and the 2.8 I have a crop body, so I am thinking the DOF may not be good enough for me, what do you think?
