I had the 2.8 IS and I decided to rent this lens out for a day and when I did I sold my 2.8 and bought the "little brother". To me it out preforms the 2.8 in all aspects.. I mostly do portraits and weddings and I dont even have a problem shooting in a dark church with this lens. Im very happy with the purchase and no complaints what so ever!
This was shot at 1/80 sec at ISO 100 with a 5D

I shoot all sorts of action but also a lot of flowers and static subjects, so when the light gets low, which is when I like to shoot flowers, the shots are crispy sharp and the ISO's low...But to answer your question, the only action I shoot with the IS on is when I'm panning

You didn't say where you plan to buy from but, which ever way you decide to go (IS vs. Non-IS), have a look at Adorama or B&H, or even Amazon. Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens with Case & Hood - USA (http://www.adorama.com/refby.tpl?op=details&sku=CA702004AFU&refby=email_friend)

IS is to overcome camera movement (handholding shake) not subject movement. To address subject movement, one needs shutter speed (read: fast aperture or high iso) or possibly flash.

This is a great pic.
I posted a thread on the f/2.8 non IS version, to know its attributes. Searched for a thread on the f/4 IS and found this one - I somehow feel that this lens, the f/4 IS will be on my 5D; not the f/2.8 non IS.
Seeing each post here and the attached photographs, strenghtens the decison in favour of the Canon EF 70-200 F/4 L IS USM.

THE VERDICT IS OUT!!!
I've sat & reviewed this thread since 3am, took a few breaks for a nap, for breakfast & for lunch.
I've seen that the lens can do wonders, and that optimum use has to be made of it.
The photographs have been awesome. I replied to some of the posts which caught my eye; does not mean that the un replied ones are not great... infact almost, almost all are AWESOME!
Yesterday, I checked out the f/2.8 [Non IS] and the f/4 [Non IS]; the f/4 produced better pictures. The IS will definitely be an asset!
Since I've read the entire thread on the f/4 IS, the votes have been swinging heavily towards the f/4 IS and at the end results clearly indicate the winner - CANON 70-200mm f/4L IS USM.
Thanks a million all you wonderful people who have taken your time to post your images here; it has surely helped. I'll do my bit once I buy the lens.
Obrigado.

Need your advise - what would be the best UV, CPL filter for this lens?

Congrats! I think you'll like it! I came to the same conclusions as well. The way I see it, the next 70-200 to be released will be the f2.8 IS version, and it will be at least $2k after their done with it. The f4 IS version was just updated recently (4-stop IS, weather sealing, ect) and is a steal for around $1k USD.

Thanks mate, don't think that I will be able to check out the lens tomorrow as decided; being month end and have to review monthly targets set at work.

I found out my lens is getting softer and softer towards 200mm. Is this normal? I start my original post (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=738741) in the EF lenses forum, I think I may get a better chance getting answer here. Here are the pics. Do you think I should send my lens for calibration?

i_am_hydrogen,
What is happening here, from the bottom shot it looks as though the top three aircraft are flying in formation using visual queues and references for positioning, while the bottom aircraft is checking the formation.
Looks like its a slow fly past with slats engaged.
When formations look this good people are working flat out, brilliant shots, just brilliant.

Hey there everyone.....Great thread for a lense i am on the verge of buying. I have ploughed myself through about 30 pages so far and I was wondering about how this lense performs in not so ideal lighting conditions. eg. Indoor halls, church (weddings), even inside a house( i guess i will be standing way back for this one :).
Anyway, amateur questions i know but would love to get some feedback on it if possible.

Therefore you have no pictures of low light situations..?
I guess what I was trying to ask was for examples of images in the lighting conditions I mentioned.
I will be more "Simple" next time I ask something. Didnt think I would have to.
