Brand new to the forum. This thread is a great opener for me. Inspiring photos!
My new 50D and EF-S 17-55 arrive tomorrow. This lens, EF 70 200 f/4 is (soon) to be my next lens. I plan to have it before the Petit Le Mans sports car race next month.
Thanks for all the contributions.

I just realized I have been posting in the wrong thread..,.

So now I'm moving over to here...
I got this lens a few weeks ago and LOVE it.. I've been wanting one for a long time.
The sharpness blows me away, although I am getting a bit of back focus.. . but I think it might be my body... micro adjustment is in order..

Anyway, couple of shots... :)

I was seriously contemplating also upgrading to the IS version as well, but I get a fantastic photo with a tripod and great shots (at times) hand held and holding my breath. So spending that extra $800 for the IS will just have to wait.:p

IS does help. It's not the be all and end all but it does mean you get more keepers from difficult situations.

Here are some taken today from the zoo. It started out cloudy and dark in places, bright in others. It was tough (at least for a novice like me) to get the exposure right without getting handshake or motion blur.

Thank you very much. You gotta love the bokeh of this lens at f/4.

Thanks a lot. I did tweak the colors a bit, but I just played off of the colors that were naturally produced in the photo.

I just got my 70-200mm the other day and I am in love with it... Its such a pleasure to use. The AF, the colors, the IQ... Incredible. Well spent money!

Here is a pic I just grabbed out in the garden (until I really try it out this weekend). I mean, look at that 100% crop, the detail this lens picks up! And although my example is not wide open at f/4, the detail is just as incredible. I was just testing this lens all over its range to see how it reacts. But I liked this shot...

Nice one mate, you can just about reach out & touch the Moon, owing to the zooming capabilities of the fantastic 70-200L IS. The 40D is a great camera too, seeing I own one too. Not that I'm biassed or any such thing; "Well perhaps just a tad"

Oh, and as a testament to it's toughness... my wife and I were walking on a wooden boardwalk around some geysers, and I was wearing my camera backpack. She unzipped it to get the camera (with the 28-135 attached), and out fell my 70-200 f/4L. As soon as I heard the loud "thunk" behind me, I knew what it was. She confirmed it with, "Oh, damn, that was your lens." I felt sick to my stomach but downplayed it by walking along, taking shots with the other lens. I didn't want her to feel bad. But after about ten minutes, I couldn't stand it anymore, sat down and switched to the 70-200, and fired off a couple shots. Worked like a champ! :)

Haven't been here for awhile.

Some tax from a maths conference/talk I went to. Taken with 70-200 (my first time using this lens for portraits.. I usually use the 17-55 at 55mm or the 85mm).

What do you mean by "Some tax"?

Financially it's a downgrade but not in resulting images! The 70-200 f2.8 is a great lens, but it's at it's best at f4 at the long end, so I traded for the F4 IS & bought the 200L 2.8.

I had the same problem with my 5D. You need to squirt a shot of WD-40 around the lens mount to loosen it up and remove any dust or gunk. This, coupled with a big pair of channel locks will ensure that lens will come right off. Good luck.

My very first one with the lens. I really really really like it, only bad thing is that it makes my 24-105 look very unsharp!

Image below is very compressed and resized to meet the 150kb limit. The original is just super sharp and detailed. Simply love the lens.
