Went to the Bob Duffy show in Franklin Square on Friday night, at Platteduetche Restaurant. Found it strange to attend a boxing show in a restaurant. The lighting was horrendous, 2 huge chandeliers and hi-hats, the two other 'togs beside me shot with their flash the entire night, annoyed the hell out of me, but.....who am I to get pissed?! I guess im the idiot for not using my flash, being that nobody seemed to care....I found it rude, but I brought along my 50 and 85 1.8's T.G!

Anyways, onto the show....

Back to the Flashy 'Togs beside me, anybody else come across this problem or how would you suggest handling this scenario?

Flash is forbidden ringside, however the NY commission has granted the photographers at the Plattdeusche shows the option of firing off a flash provided it is bounced off the ceiling and not at the fighters...this is the second or third show there, I did an earlier one there, but had the HBO fights in NYC last night, so I couldnt cover the show on Friday...

General rule of thumb just nicely approach the photographer and tell them that flash is forbidden at ringside, most of the time it's someone who does not usually shoot boxing and was just uninformed and they will thank you...In this case however, they were not in the wrong...

very nice job, i am just getting into shooting fights myself and I also don't like using flash or i bounce it. Just curious as to the setup and settings you and muls use for events, both of you have great pics!

all depends on the lighting, at the televised shows, HBO, Showtime, ESPN you'll generally get iso 1000, f2.8-f4.0 and a shutter speed around 1/500th-1/640th of a second...Off tv all bets are off...

Thanks Ed for giving me the heads up, I didnt want to start a fuss, I did my own thing and let them work away. What annoyed me more was that the two muppets beside me showed up with 24-105 F 4.0 lenses, so....i knew I would probably get a blank stare as a response.

I have a lot to learn in the means of shooting boxing, but its very annoying when of the few 'keepers' I got on the night, half of them ended up like this!!!!

BTW the fastest I was able to achieve with the 1.8 was 1/125 @ 1600!

Ray, thanks for leaving me out of the trashing. I was the third shooter (gave you my center ring spot) and moved to the opposite neutral corner to get away from those guys. They have an in with the promoter and don't follow protocol or courtesy at any of the fights that they attend. If you question Karma; one of them had their 100-300mm lens lifted while we were packing up that night.

As Muls stated, there are venues that the Commission has granted us permission to bounce flash. This place and the Huntington Townhouse are 2 that I've 'bounced' at. I was told by R.S.Stevens, that if anyone in any fight/corner complains, we have to stop the flashes.

Great b/w phots; nicely composed.
BTW, I'm the one shooting up at Moore by his right foot in your bottom photo.
Look foward to meeting up with you again.
Pete
