I'm looking for a good 1.4 tele converter for my D60 with a 70-300mm IS lens. Canon only makes a 1.4 for the L series lens and my lens is a standard lens. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've heard that the Kenko is supposed to be decent.

You can use the Canon 1.4 with any Canon EF mount lens. You will only get autofocus though with the lenses specified.

Maybe with the 1.4 TC I - I've got the II and it doesn't fit on my Sigma 105 Macro, nor my Canon 50mm f/1.8, nor my 17-40 L, nor my 28-90mm. There's a protruding element on the 1.4 II which prohibits the connection.

Canon says "This tele extender can be used with fixed focal length lenses 135mm and longer (except the 135mm f/2.8 Softfocus lens), and the EF 70-200 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L IS, 70-200 f/4.0L, and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS zoom lenses."

Maybe with the 1.4 TC I

FYI: The only difference between the I and the II 1.4's is the weather proofing o-rings. There's rumor the glass was improved, but you know how those rumors go.

ooops! I use it on my Sigma 500mm 4.5 without a problem. I mixed up fit but no AF with fitting at all.
Sorry,
Scott

You can't actually fit the Canon TC's to most lenses due to the fact it needs a recess in the lens to accomodate it. The Canon EF lens website lists compatible lenses - http://www.usa.canon.com/eflenses/

Last I heard the IS might not work with the teleconvertors, but thats just what I heard.

IS will *usually* work - best to check the Canon link above.

TC's do not effect IS. TC's do effect AF in some cases. For example, a 1.4TC couples with a 100-400L and a 10D will not autofocus. IS will, however, still work.

would probally explain why they say "Manual Focus recomended"

Hey all:

Haven't we been here before on this? - about a month ago there was an outstanding review with web site linkage comparing the old and new Canon TC's on the 70-200 L 2.8 and the 100-400 L. Bottom line- the TC's only work with select Canon tele and zoom lens. The new TC's have better seals, but only marginally superior optics. My 2X TC works great with my 70-200 L 2.8 IS, and the IS and AF both work fine. And despite whats been said on this board, I love my 2X in a pinch.

I have the kenko pro 1.4 (think I paid 160) and it works with all my lenses so far.
28-135IS - AF works in daylight
501.8
70-200F4 - AF works in daylight
75-300 - AF works in daylight

In low light it hunts quite a bit.

PS, can you confirm that AF works with the 28-135 lens when at full zoom (where f/5.6 becomes an effective f/8 )? And that IS functions as well?

Also, I saw this at Adorama:
The PRO 300's can be used with telephoto zoom lenses as well as prime lenses, but, due to their design, Kenko does not recommend them for lenses that have a zoom range that starts under 50 mm.

Any problems when using the converter with that lens?

Thanks,
