S-50 Red Eye Removal Problem

I have a one year old S-50. Love it very much.
Lately I noticed that my subjects have red eyes. I made sure that the camera is at Auto, and the flash setting is with red eye, and the menu shows that red eye is on. I tried to take the picture again and the flash really doesn't turn prior to the real shot.

Could it possibly be broken or there is something that I am missing?

The pre-flash is usually fairly quick so you may not notice it so much. Unfortunately the preflash will only reduce red eye a little not completely. That is my experience.
